Live at the O2 (2008)

Live at the O2 (2008)

'Live at the O2 Arena' was recorded on 8th November 2008 during Katie's 'Pictures' world tour. In a live review of the concert The Times wrote "her voice was rarely short of astounding" and this live recording leaves the listener in no doubt as to what a unique and extraordinarily perfect voice Katie Melua has. Katie opened the concert, with just her electric guitar for accompaniment, singing 'Piece By Piece' - the title track of her second album - and 'Lilac Wine' before taking a seat at the grand piano to play the Georgian folk song 'Yellow Leaves' (or Qviteli Potlebi). "She sings impeccably in her sultry but innocent way" - MojoThe concert was a celebration of the remarkable success that Katie has enjoyed since the release of 'Call Off The Search' in 2003. Joined by her 6 piece band Katie weaved her way through her three multi-platinum selling albums including her debut single 'Closest Thing To Crazy', the international hit single 'Nine Million Bicycles' and the more recent singles from her third album 'Pictures'. After a mesmerising cover of Janis Joplin's 'Kosmic Blues' Katie closed the show as she began, unaccompanied, to sing the heartbreaking 'I Cried For You'.

Midwestern obscure-rock archivists and curators Guided by Voices are back before you could consider them gone with another fun-filled, hook-happy hodge podge of songs, half-songs, ideas, and vaguely pleasing sounds to get you through summer. How many influences can you find in this picture? A Beatles harmony and a Syd Barrett musing here and there are easy to spot, but how about the pack of no-name psychedelicists and prepunk garage dwellers that only Guided by voices have ever heard of? Could be thousands. GBV are so good at integrating references, in fact, their records sound like nothing more than well-groomed and quirky modern rock. Call them post-postmodernists--what else to brand a group that sings a song named "The Golden Heart Mountain Top Queen Directory" without even a smirk and doesn't come off disgustingly pretentious? Sincere? Timeless? We get the joke while they swear they never made one. --Roni Sarig

Sing-A-Longs & Lullabies for the Film Curious George

Sing-A-Longs & Lullabies for the Film Curious George

Faced with the task of giving a voice to a central character that does not speak, Universal Pictures turned to Jack Johnson to craft songs that could provide a voice for Curious George. As a new father, it gave him the opportunity to make an album for both parents and children. Presented with early animations and the story line, Jack crafted new songs that capture the emotions of Curious George as he leaves the jungle to follow the Man with the Yellow Hat. He also turned to friends Ben Harper, G. Love, and Matt Costa to contribute songs that might bridge the gap between parent and child. Joined on the record by his band (Adam Topol, Merlo Podlewski, and Zack Gill), Jack duets with three of the other songwriters (Ben Harper, G. Love, and Matt Costa), and does a cover of the White Stripes' "We're Going to Be Friends." Parents who watched Schoolhouse Rock on Saturday mornings when they were children will recognize Jack's take on the classic "Three Is a Magic Number," reinterpreted with the 3 R's as a call to protect the environment and Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Sing-a-Longs and Lullabies feels like so much more than your standard soundtrack due to its unified creative vision. While the songs have a universal appeal, their themes speak to a child's experience (or in this case, a curious monkey's experience) of the world. Barbra Streisand - What About Today? - Cd

Barbra Streisand - What About Today? - Cd

WHAT ABOUT TODAY is a shining souvenir of an era in the U.S. when there was social unrest and young people's voices were heard, a subject Streisand alludes to in her liner notes. Released in July 1969, the album kept Barbra current, while continuing to showcase her incredible talent. The title track questions the contemporaneous socio-political state of affairs and is a fast, brilliant number. "Ask Yourself Why" (From The Motion Picture The Swimming Pool) is a Bacharach-like tune with what sounds like a one-take vocal due to Barbra's sheer mastery of the song."Honey Pie" is the first of three Beatles covers and is Barbra at her swanky best. Streisand adds a humorous touch with the food metaphors of Paul Simon's "Punky's Dilemma" and again masters the art of the ballad in "Until It's Time For You To Go." The Queen of Easy Listening puts her own spin on "With A Little Help From My Friends" and "Alfie," and concludes the record with a sweet, heartfelt rendition of the Beatles' "Goodnight." This record shows that

Great Lake Swimmers

Great Lake Swimmers

With the buzz of crickets, Great Lake Swimmers’ self-titled debut opens with the subtly intoxicating "Moving Pictures, Silent Films." Plucked acoustic guitar weaves with sparse piano while crickets whisper in the background and songwriter Tony Dekker’s warbling voice hovers overtop; this could easily be the lonely soundtrack to a long-lost silent film. Recorded in an abandoned grain silo in southern Ontario, this haunting album finds its roots in classic folk music, and while mention of Nick Drake is undeniably loaded, it’s an unavoidable comparison. Throw in a pinch of Neil Young’s quieter moments and a touch of Cass McCombs and My Morning Jacket at their most sedate, and the result is the gorgeous sound of Great Lake Swimmers. With subtle colorings of acoustic guitar, piano, lap steel and accordion, it’s Toronto-based songwriter Dekker’s voice that carries the band. The reverby echo of Dekker’s vocals is the perfect accompaniment for a dark night on a moonlit porch or a long drive lit only by the dim glow of headlights. Addictive like the finest narcotics, this debut is an emotional, stirring album that is not just meant to be listened to…it’s meant to be soaked in.

Handel: Messiah

Handel: Messiah

The vocal quartet of soloists on this recording of Messiah is one of the best balanced. The singers are English, and they have been around for many years. Their interpretations of Messiah are known to audiences and congregations all over Britain. April Cantelo, whose singing of the soprano arias is splendidly forthright and confident, is heedful to the underlying drama of the text. The upper range of her voice is more than clear: it has a silvery edge to it that she uses with uncommon intelligence, so that even a short passage like "And suddenly there was with the Angel . . ." remains fixed in the mind as a moment of genuine biblical drama. Her "Rejoice greatly" and "I know that my Redeemer liveth" are also magnificent and afford ready proof of sheer technique as well as a remarkable control of timbre. Helen Watts, in her deeply-felt interpretation of "He was despised", gives what is the best performance on record. Her voice is rich without being overopulent; it has all the qualities of a fine contralto without any loss of mobility. Wilfred Brown adds lustre to the tenor solos in a unique and personal way. The timbre of his voice is neither heroic nor lachrymose, but it has individual qualities that add up to something far more impressive than those. His intonation is rocksteady, and his upward range so well developed that the high notes in "Thou shalt break them" emerge almost effortlessly. Brown's vivid performance of this aria is one of the most praiseworthy in the entire set, for he sings the words as if he really meant them. "Every valley" is beautifully phrased and evokes a verdant pastoral picture which Handel was surely aiming at. Roger Stalman's fine bass voice is heard to advantage in "But who may abide." "Why do the nations", with all its ferocious roulades, holds no terrors for this singer. He has great powers of sostenuto as well as ample flexibility.

Lonely Avenue

Lonely Avenue

'It has its own voice, which comes from some place between the two of us,' says author, Oscar-nominated screenwriter and now lyricist Nick Hornby of 'Lonely Avenue,' his unique, words-and-music collaboration with Ben Folds. Singer-songwriter-pianist Folds puts it more bluntly: 'I felt like I'd found something rare on eBay or something. Nick should have done it before but it's his first big effort and I feel like I really scored here.' Hornby first attracted the attention of music fans - and artists like Folds - with his brilliant, bittersweet 1995 novel 'High Fidelity,' about an obsessive record collector's crumbling personal life that was translated into a cult classic film starring John Cusack and even a stage musical. Hornby has been an admirer since attending Folds' first U.K. shows. In fact, Hornby devoted an entire essay in his 2002 collection of music-themed short pieces, 'Songbook,' to Folds, praising the 'sophisticated simplicity' of Folds' writing. The London-based Hornby supplied the words for 'Lonely Avenue,' a project sparked by the long-distance friendship that developed after Hornby published 'Songbook.' Nashville resident Folds then set Hornby's lyrics to music in the vintage, orchestra-sized studio he'd rescued from oblivion and has been working in for the last ten years. The hero of 'High Fidelity' would have approved: Folds conceived the album as a vinyl release and recorded everything live in analog to two-inch tape, finally mastering the disc at Abbey Road. Joining Folds in the studio at various points were his own band, a string section, and legendary arranger Paul Buckmaster, who, as Folds describes him, is 'the person who makes you feel the goose bumps at the chorus and you don't know why.' (Those are Buckmaster's string charts, for example, on Elton John's 'Tiny Dancer' and The Rolling Stones' 'Moonlight Mile.') 'Lonely Avenue' offers equal measures of humor and pathos in often deceptively cheerful songs. Folds literally gives voice to Hornby's endearingly mixed up, lovelorn characters, who come across as sympathetic even at their most hapless. An aging pop singer has to endlessly and agonizingly reprise his one hit, a paean to a woman he left years ago, to the fans who still attend his shows ('Belinda'). A mother deliberately avoids a stunning view of New Years Eve fireworks as she ministers to her seriously ill child in a London hospital ('Picture Window'). Hornby reconstructs the world of crippled, Brill Building-era songwriter Doc Pomus circa 1962 ('Doc Pomus'), and imagines, with unexpected tenderness, the moment when Alaskan teenager Levi Johnston discovered he'd impregnated the newly announced vice-presidential candidate's daughter, Bristol Palin. The result is an 11-song set that's as playful as it is soul-stirring, and more than a little magical. Says Folds, 'With some albums the comet goes by and you grab it while it's passing and everything you do has some comet dust on it. This is one of those albums.' Also available in a Deluxe Edition that includes the album on CD, four short stories by Hornby, and 15 images by acclaimed photographer Joel Meyerowitz, all in a hardbound, 152-page book.
