Basie, count - Count Meets The Duke/classics [cd New]

Basie, count - Count Meets The Duke/classics [cd New]

2 LPs on 1 CD.Personnel: Jimmy Rushing (vocals).Liner Note Authors: George T. Simon; Stanley Dance.Recording information: 07/07/1961/??/??/1955.Photographers: Don Hunstein; Burt Goldblatt. This single CD combines the legendary meeting of the Duke Ellington and Count Basie Orchestra's from the 1962 Columbia LP First Time and the Basie band's 1955 Columbia release Classics of the Great Count Basie Band. But First Time is not a straight reissue, as "Wild Man" from the recording Paris Blues is added. The actual Ellington/Basie combine is on three cuts only, and they do roar. Of the 12 straight Basie sides, four are truly classic blues, featuring the fabulous Mr. 5x5, Jimmy Rushing. As single CDs, these would come up short time-wise, but here they're well within the 80-minute CD time restriction, and certainly worth your hard earned dinero. ~ Michael G. Nastos

The Servicemen - Meet... The Servicemen: Classic Soul From Phoenix, - Cd

Liner Note Author: Dan Nowicki.Arranger: The LBJ's.Calling Meet... the Servicemen an essential release in the Servicemen catalog is a bit misleading, being that it encompasses nearly all of the mysterious group's entire known 27-minute-and-43-second output, with the exception of their first single. And though it assuredly holds that title, it's a pretty great disc of regional soul sides recorded in 1966 and 1967 by a quintet serving at the Luke Air Force Base west of Phoenix. There are six songs, five demos, and a three-song overlap between them. "Are You Angry," with glorious sunshine horn arrangements (by backing band the LBJ's) and rushing four-part harmonies (by leader James Mitchell) that swoop and dive around one another, found its way to compilations starting in the '80s, and rightly so. On the latter sessions, which include the tunes "My Turn" and "I'll Stop Loving You" as well as doo wop staples like "Right Around the Corner," the backing band features future Muddy Waters and Miles Davis guitarist Pe

Vol. 2-Road Shows (Shm-CD)

Vol. 2-Road Shows (Shm-CD)

Sonny Rollins's forthcoming album, Road Shows, vol. 2, is quite likely to revive the delirious excitement stirred up at the saxophonist's sold-out 80th-birthday concert held in New York nearly one year ago. Four tracks on the new CD, which will be released September 13 by Doxy/Emarcy Records, were recorded that night; one of them is the 20-minute "Sonnymoon for Two" on which Rollins and surprise guest Ornette Coleman performed together in public for the first time in their long acquaintance, with electrifying results. "This material was not intended to be my next album," says Rollins, "but it was so strong that I felt I had to release it." Bassist Christian McBride and drummer Roy Haynes, who had previously appeared with Rollins at his 50th-anniversary Carnegie Hall concert in 2007, are special guests along with Coleman on "Sonnymoon." Other @80 selections feature trumpeter Roy Hargrove ("I Can't Get Started," "Rain Check") and guitarist Jim Hall ("In a Sentimental Mood") with Rollins's working band: guitarist Russell Malone, bassist Bob Cranshaw, drummer Kobie Watkins, and percussionist Sammy Figueroa. The remaining tracks on the new CD, "They Say It's Wonderful" and "St. Thomas," were recorded during a Japanese tour one month after the @80 concert. "I wanted this Road Shows to comprise performances from 2010," Rollins states. Volume 1, by contrast, presented a range of performances recorded over a nearly 30-year period. The historic onstage meeting of Rollins and Coleman, whom CD annotator Francis Davis describes as "the two sharpest minds in jazz," was a first, though the saxophonists are friends who used to practice together on the beach in California. Coleman was invited to play at the September 10th Beacon concert, says Rollins, "but I didn't know until the last minute whether he would accept the invitation." Indeed, his participation was confirmed just a few hours before showtime. "I figured that `Sonnymoon' would be open enough for Ornette and for everybody," says Rollins. "It could be played in a structured way or an unstructured way. It was malleable enough to suit whatever my guests wanted to do with it." Road Shows, vol. 1 was one of the most highly-praised albums of 2008, placing at the top of many best-of lists and critics polls. Stereophile, in a five-star review, wrote that it "represents a new entry on the short list of albums that every serious jazz fan needs to own." Referring to the three-year gap between the two Road Shows CDs, the saxophonist comments that "it is my intention and desire to release more music in a much shorter span of time. I have a lot in the archives, but I am thinking about recent things. I want to capture some of Sonny Rollins 2011--new material that I have, and new ideas that I have and am working on, which are as yet unfulfilled and undocumented. Working in the studio is a definite possibility." Rollins, whose most recent honor is the National Medal of Arts, which was presented to him by President Barack Obama in March, is currently on tour in Australia and New Zealand. Early last month, he returned to the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival for the first time since the mid-1990s, premiering a much-talked-about composition called "D. Cherry." Shortly after the release of Road Shows, vol. 2, Rollins will perform several concerts in California, including the Monterey Jazz Festival, as well as in Washington, DC and Nashville, before embarking on a fall European tour. *

The Mindeater

The Mindeater

The Mindeater is a collaborative project birthed by the ever-prolific recording artist Bonnie 'Prince' Billy and Dominic Cipolla,multi-instrumentalist and main brain behind the elusive Phantom Family Halo. While Mr. Billy needs no introduction, his seemingly unending contributions to the presentation of contemporary 'folk' music have continued to surprise and impress audiences for the better part of two decades. Jumping right into the twenty-or-so minutes of music at hand, Bonnie's vocal performance on The Mindeater title-track is perhaps already one of his eeriest in years, recalling the creepy backwoods paranoia of records like Arise Therefore (if there could ever be such a performance like those of Arise Therefore). So it begins. Beyond the world of weirdo, kraut-encrypted, Amon Düül-meets-Roxy Music glam jams, Mr. Cipolla (also long time member of Siltbreeze crack-folk improv ensemble Sapat and singer for throwback metal slayers Dead Child) is surely the lesser known of the due, yet plays no less valuable a role over the course of the EP. The Phantom Family Halo takes the songwriting reigns throughout a majority of The Mindeater, their fifth release to date. Having met each other through mutual friend/local video store-owner and former Slint bassist, Todd Brashear, The Phantom Family folks hit it off quite nicely with Bonnie 'Prince' Billy last year when he joined them for a performance of the song at a and anniversary party they were asked to play with Roky Erikson. That was last summer in their shared hometown of Louisville, KY. Since then, the two forces have joined again, not only to record their psyched out, full-band, live-in-studio rendition of The Everly Brothers' classic 'I Wonder If I Care As Much' but also to cats a few spells of their own, The resulting tracks, The Mindeater, Roki For Nwo, and Suddenly the Darkness, were stripped to the bone and recorded to tape on the second floor of a funeral home where Cipolla lived until recently relocating to Brooklyn. The Mindeater EP was previously released and sold out as a run of 1000 limited edition 10"s on the Sophomore Lounge label. Knitting Factory Records is proud to present the tracks on CD format for the first time.

Meet on the Ledge: The Classic Years (1967-1975)

Meet on the Ledge: The Classic Years (1967-1975)

The best British folk-rock band of the late 60s, Fairport Convention didmore than any other act to develop a truly British variation on the folk-rockprototype by drawing upon traditional material and styles indigenous tothe British Isles. While the revved-up renditions of traditional British folk tunes drew the most critical attention, the group members were also (at least at the outset) talented songwriters as well as interpreters. They were comfortable with conventional harmony-based folk-rock as well as tunes that drew upon more explicitly traditional sources, and boasted some of the best singers and instrumentalists of the day. Titled for one of Fairport s best loved classics, MEET ON THE LEDGE was recorded on their 35th Anniversary tour (2002) in Canterbury, England. The Nicol/Pegg/Sanders/Leslie/Conway lineup sparkles, and the pace is frequently relentless. Paramount here is the theme from MASH, in its ''Suicide Is Painless'' disguise, which spirals into a delirious ''Matty Groves'' (via a taste of ''End of a Holiday''), to become one of those irresistible Fairport marathons, coming in at more than 12 minutes of strong, stomping good fun. The band s own history is retold through such classics as a sprightly ''Meet on the Ledge,'' a driving ''Walk Awhile'' and a triumphant ''Rosie,'' and in a worldof Fairport live albums to last most of you a lifetime, this is one of the ones that ensures that you'll keep listening for more. On their night, there s nothing like them. And this was one such night.
