Beyond The Typewriter By Sharon Hartman Strom

Beyond The Typewriter By Sharon Hartman Strom

By World War I, managers wanted young women with some high school education for new "light manufacturing" jobs in the office. Women could be paid significantly less than men with equivalent educations and the "marriage bar"--the practice of not hiring or retaining married women--ensured that most of them would leave the workplace before the issue of higher salaries arose. Encouraged by free training gained in high schools and by working conditions better than those available in factories, young working-class women sought out office jobs. Facing sexual discrimination in most of the professions and higher-level office jobs, middle-class women often found themselves "falling into" clerical positions. Sharon Hartman Strom details office working conditions and practices, drawing upon archival and anecdotal data. She analyzes women office-workers' ambitions and explores how the influences of scientific management, personnel management, and secondary vocational education affected office workplaces and hierarchies. The Mac Is Not A Typewriter: A Style Manual For Creatin

The Mac Is Not A Typewriter: A Style Manual For Creatin

One of the most popular Macintosh books ever written, The Mac is not a typewriter has been called the "Strunk and White of typography." Tourists with Typewriters: Critical Reflections on Contemporary Travel Writing

Tourists with Typewriters: Critical Reflections on Contemporary Travel Writing

The first extensive survey of contemporary travel writing, Tourists with Typewriters offers a series of challenging and provocative critical insights into a wide range of travel narratives written in English after the Second World War. The book focuses in particular on contemporary travel writers such as Jan Morris, Peter Matthiessen, V. S. Naipaul, Barry Lopez, Mary Morris, Paul Theroux, Peter Mayle, and the late Bruce Chatwin. It examines some of the reasons for travel writing's enduring popularity, and for its particular appeal to readers--many of them also travelers--in the present. The book maps new terrain in a growing area of critical study. Although critical of travel writing's complacency and its often unacknowledged ethnocentrism, the book recognizes its importance as both a literary and cultural form. While travel writing at its worst emerges as a crude expression of economic advantage, at its best it becomes a subtle instrument of cultural self-perception, a barometer for changing views of "other" (i.e., foreign, non-Western) cultures, and a trigger for the information circuits that tap us into the wider world.Tourists with Typewriters gauges both the best and worst in contemporary travel writing, capturing the excitement of this most volatile--and at times infuriating--of literary genres. The book will appeal to general readers interested in a closer examination of travel writing and to academic readers in disciplines such as literary/cultural studies, geography, history, anthropology, and tourism studies."An eminently readable and informative study. It breathes tolerance and intelligence. It is critically perceptive and very au courant. It raises issues (coloniality, postmodernity, gender. . . ) and discusses books that readers of many different stripes will want to find out about." --Ross Chambers, University of MichiganPatrick Holland, Associate Professor of English, University of Guelph, was born in New Zealand and educated in England, Australia, and Canada. Graham Huggan, Professor of English, University of Munich, was born in Hong Kong and educated in England and in British Columbia.

Smoking Typewriters: The Sixties Underground Press And

Smoking Typewriters: The Sixties Underground Press And

How did the New Left uprising of the 1960s happen? What caused millions of young people--many of them affluent and college educated--to suddenly decide that American society needed to be completely overhauled? In Smoking Typewriters, historian John McMillian shows that one answer to these questions can be found in the emergence of a dynamic underground press in the 1960s. Following the lead of papers like the Los Angeles Free Press, the East Village Other, and the Berkeley Barb, young people across the country launched hundreds of mimeographed pamphlets and flyers, small press magazines, and underground newspapers. New and cheap printing technologies had democratized the publishing process, and by the decade's end the combined circulation of underground papers stretched into the millions. Though not technically illegal, these papers were often genuinely subversive, and many who produced and sold them--on street-corners, at poetry readings, gallery openings, and coffeeho

Gramophone, Film, Typewriter (Writing Science)

Gramophone, Film, Typewriter (Writing Science)

Toward the end of the nineteenth century, the hegemony of the printed word was shattered by the arrival of new media technologies that offered novel ways of communicating and storing data. Previously, writing had operated by way of symbolic mediation—all data had to pass through the needle’s eye of the written signifier—but phonography, photography, and cinematography stored physical effects of the real in the shape of sound waves and light. The entire question of referentiality had to be recast in light of these new media technologies; in addition, the use of the typewriter changed the perception of writing from that of a unique expression of a literate individual to that of a sequence of naked material signifiers.Part technological history of the emergent new media in the late nineteenth century, part theoretical discussion of the responses to these media—including texts by Rilke, Kafka, and Heidegger, as well as elaborations by Edison, Bell, Turing, and other innovators—Gramophone, Film, Typewriter analyzes this momentous shift using insights from the work of Foucault, Lacan, and McLuhan. Fusing discourse analysis, structuralist psychoanalysis, and media theory, the author adds a vital historical dimension to the current debates over the relationship between electronic literacy and poststructuralism, and the extent to which we are constituted by our technologies. The book ties the establishment of new discursive practices to the introduction of new media technologies, and it shows how both determine the ways in which psychoanalysis conceives of the psychic apparatus in terms of information machines.Gramophone, Film, Typewriter is, among other things, a continuation as well as a detailed elaboration of the second part of the author’s Discourse Networks, 1800/1900 (Stanford, 1990). As such, it bridges the gap between Kittler’s discourse analysis of the 1980’s and his increasingly computer-oriented work of the 1990’s.

Monkeys With Typewriters: Myths and realities of social media at work

Monkeys With Typewriters: Myths and realities of social media at work

The Internet is a creative destroyer which, positively or negatively, has had a significant impact in every sector of industry - shrinking value chains, removing barriers to entry, disrupting business models, slashing transaction costs... MONKEYS WITH TYPEWRITERS thoroughly debunks the idea that social media are an amateurish distraction for today's organisations. It addresses their true impact on the workplace, asking: What new concepts and values are being introduced? How is executive power being eroded? What are the risks and benefits of increasingly open systems? What can managers do to ensure a smooth transition to a more innovative, collaborative working environment? The book is distilled from interviews with more than 50 thought leaders in the social web: executives at Google, Yahoo and Salesforce; developers at MySpace and Microsoft; and web pioneers like Tim O'Reilly and Craig Newmark. It is packed with insights from CEOs of small, savvy start-ups, as well as lessons from senior staff from multinationals like British Telecom, Ford, IBM and Shell. MONKEYS WITH TYPEWRITERS identifies key behaviours in social media and relates these to current business practice. These behaviours are proposed as a practical framework, which can be actively applied to create happier, more productive organisations. The comprehensive glossary of social media terms will be useful to social media novices and experienced users alike. 'A timely and thoughtful reflection on how the social web is developing in London, both online and off' - Lloyd Davis, Founder, Tuttle Club 'Great insights into past and present notions of what it takes to be a leader' - David Wilcox, Social Reporter 'Jemima's book captures the Zeitgeist' - Joanne Jacobs, Social Media Expert Consultant
