Pudd'nhead Wilson and Those Extraordinary Twins (Barnes & Noble Classics Series)

Pudd'nhead Wilson and Those Extraordinary Twins, by Mark Twain, is part of the Barnes & Noble Classics series, which offers quality editions at affordable prices to the student and the general reader, including new scholarship, thoughtful design, and pages of carefully crafted extras. Here are some of the remarkable features of Barnes & Noble Classics:All editions are beautifully designed and are printed to superior specifications; some include illustrations of historical interest. Barnes & Noble Classics pulls together a constellation of influences—biographical, historical, and literary—to enrich each reader's understanding of these enduring works. Written during Mark Twain’s so-called pessimistic period, Pudd’nhead Wilson is a darkly comic masterpiece that exposes the wounds of racism in America and the absurdity of judging character based upon class or skin color.Set in a small Mississippi River town in the state of Missouri before the Civil War, the novel begins when Roxana, a beautiful slave who can pass for white, switches the child of her master with her own infant son, now called Tom, who grows into a cruel and cowardly man. When Tom’s uncle, Judge Driscoll, is found murdered after a botched robbery attempt, suspicion is cast upon two former sideshow performers, Luigi and Angelo Capello, a pair of good-looking and charming identical twins from Italy. Meanwhile, David “Pudd’nhead” Wilson is a wise but unorthodox lawyer who collects fingerprints as a hobby. Shunned as an eccentric, he ultimately wins the respect of the townspeople when he solves the murder mystery and reveals the true identity of the killer.Often hilarious, sometimes appalling, and always fast-paced, Pudd’nhead Wilson is ultimately a fierce condemnation of a racially prejudiced society that was predicated upon the institution of slavery. This edition also includes Twain’s related short story, “Those Extraordinary Twins.” Darryl Pinckney is the author of High Cotton, a novel, and, in the Alain Locke Lecture Series, Out There: Mavericks of Black Literature.

Pudd'nhead Wilson: Literary Touchstone

Pudd'nhead Wilson: Literary Touchstone

This Prestwick House Literary Touchstone Classic includes a glossary and reader's notes to help the modern reader appreciate Twain's perspective on the human race. UNLEASHING THE ACERBIC WIT for which he was already famous, Mark Twain released Pudd'nhead Wilson in 1894 to a public not quite prepared for the American satirist's dark attack on lingering racism following the Civil War and the failure of Reconstruction. The stories of twin Italian circus performers, a beautiful slave, and a lawyer whose wry observations earn him the reputation of the village idiot converge in the fictional town of Dawson's Landing, Missouri, where the newly discovered use of fingerprints helps to expose the hypocrisy of late-Victorian morality and solve a murder. Each chapter begins with a quotation from Pudd'nhead Wilson's Calendar, and these Franklin-like aphorisms propel the story forward. As Twain himself said, "There ain't any weather in it, and there ain't any scenery-the story is stripped for flight!" And, once it takes off, there's no pausing until the last ironic twist is revealed. If you're already a fan of Mark Twain, you'll love Pudd'nhead Wilson. If you're not a fan, this book will make you one.

Pudd'nhead Wilson (Bantam Classics)

At the beginning of Pudd'nhead Wilson a young slave woman, fearing for her infant's son's life, exchanges her light-skinned child with her master's.  From this rather simple premise Mark Twain fashioned one of his most entertaining, funny, yet biting novels.  On its surface, Pudd'nhead Wilson possesses all the elements of an engrossing nineteenth-century mystery:  reversed identities, a horrible crime, an eccentric detective, a suspenseful courtroom drama, and a surprising, unusual solution.  Yet it is not a mystery novel.  Seething with the undercurrents of antebellum southern culture, the book is a savage indictment in which the real criminal is society, and racial prejudice and slavery are the crimes.  Written in 1894, Pudd'nhead Wilson glistens with characteristic Twain humor, with suspense, and with pointed irony:  a gem among the author's later works.

The Tragedy of Pudd'nhead Wilson, with eBook

Two half brothers look so similar as infants that no one can tell them apart. One, the legitimate son of a rich man, is destined for a life of comfort, while the other is condemned to be a slave because he is part black. The mother of the would-be slave is also the nurse of the other; to give her son the best life possible, she switches the babies. Soon the boy who is given every advantage becomes spoiled and cruel. He takes sadistic pleasure in tormenting his half brother. As they grow older, the townspeople no longer notice that the boys look similar, and they readily accept that each is born to his station.A local lawyer, David Wilson, has had a similar experience. On his first day in the village, he made an odd remark about a dog, and the townspeople gave him the condescending name "Pudd'nhead." Although he was a young, intelligent lawyer, he is unable to live down this name, so he toils in obscurity for over twenty years. Finally, he is presented with a complex murder trial-a chance to prove himself to the townspeople and shake this unjust label.

Pudd'nhead Wilson and Those Extraordinary Twins (Modern Library Classics)

Pudd'nhead Wilson and Those Extraordinary Twins (Modern Library Classics)

Featuring the brilliantly drawn Roxanna, a mulatto slave who suffers dire consequences after switching her infant son with her master’s baby, and the clever Pudd’nhead Wilson, an ostracized small-town lawyer, Twain’s darkly comic masterpiece is a provocative exploration of slavery and miscegenation. Leslie A. Fiedler described the novel as “half melodramatic detective story, half bleak tragedy,” noting that “morally, it is one of the most honest books in our literature.” Those Extraordinary Twins, the slapstick story that evolved into Pudd’nhead Wilson, provides a fascinating view of the author’s process. The text for this Modern Library Paperback Classic was set from the 1894 first American edition.

Pudd'nhead Wilson: Those Extraordinary Twins, The Man that Corrupted Hadleyburg (Oxford World's Classics)

Pudd'nhead Wilson: Those Extraordinary Twins, The Man that Corrupted Hadleyburg (Oxford World's Classics)

Pudd'nhead Wilson (1894), written in a more sombre vein than his other Mississippi writings, was Mark Twain's last serious work of fiction. It reveals the sinister forces that, towards the end of his life, Twain thought to be threatening the American dream. The central plot revolves around the tragedy of "Roxy," a mulatto slave whose attempt to save her son from his fate succeeds only in destroying him. An astringent work which raises the serious issue of racial difference, Pudd'nhead Wilson is considered by the critic F.R. Leavis to be "a classic of the use of popular modes--the sensational and the melodramatic." The volume also includes two other late works by Twain, Those Extraordinary Twins and The Man that Corrupted Hadleyburg.About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, voluminous notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.
