WRITING: a 2nd Life

WRITING: a 2nd Life

A TRANSFORMATIVE OPPORTUNITY: a 2nd Life “Writing: a 2nd Life” is a guide to prepare aspiring writers to learn the basics of the trade while they are too busy to commit to a writing avocation. The author, Donn Doyle, was adjunct faculty in communications subjects, at two colleges in Connecticut, MBA graduate school, University of Bridgeport; and undergraduate students at Sacred Heart University, in Fairfield, both in Connecticut. At the latter college he was part of an innovative program upgrading Creative Writing and English vocabulary and punctuation for incoming freshmen. “To improve writing skills for application to all four years. Before retirement he was in the American Studies graduate program at Fairfield University and had been a member of the college’s writing workshops for a number of years. With retirement he initiated a Creative Writing program at The Villages in North Central Florida, in conjunction with Lake Sumter Community College, where he also taught. His career spanned newspaper writer, reporter, editor and corporate and community communication programs and public relations for General Electric, Anaconda Industries, Atlantic Richfield (ARCO) Metals, as well as consulting services as an ad agency VP for business and community service organizations, including the Boy Scouts and United Fund. “A 2nd Life” is structured for the aspiring writer to spend about two-hours a week exploring the people, places and activities essential to developing the senses: see, hear, touch, smell, and taste. To observe and contrast those in various settings, and with groups and individuals. Participants can begin the journey toward writing, knowing many friends appreciate their keen sense of life, an eye for detail, and an ability to put into words things others envy. Bit by bit the kernels of wisdom that writers require for good writing are self-learned, but lacking only the opportunity to sit at a desk writing by hand their innermost thoughts, for a memoir. And, when time permits they will have mastered the elements to write good -, better -, best, as they progress at their own pace. “2nd Life” will take them to familiar places as they visit anew, for the first time with a mission, and eagerness to dig deeper into people’s motivations. Places will no longer be just with a view of wonderful sights, blurred by day-to-day living. What was once just a fleeting scene whisking past a car windshield, or sidewalks now with people to observe at a bus stop, or a winter landscape already past before a smart phone could capture its beauty. Journaling the fruit of each week’s collected insights is a journeyman’s (or woman’s) road map to a story not yet unearthed. Capturing the personality and style of a person and comparing how each differs, opens wide vistas where character creation, and depth to scenes of early life with playmates and adults exhibit characteristics and thoughts that contribute to a growing wealth of knowledgeable and information. All this can be expanded, revised, and with the genius of the individual will be projected into a story to captivate relatives, as memoir. And, when the spirit so dictates, can easily be elevated to short story, and with practice and dedication could rocket to a novel. The ability to project the possibility of story is the critical aspect of this guide. The beauty is that it all comes to the emerging writer. Next comes a transformation by the person who takes the challenge to do what she knew could be done. She changes from a casual observer to an insightful writer, in less time than most people might expect. Individual effort determines that portion of the project proposed in a “a 2nd Life” that has created a new, better being, able now to share what was once shrouded in her mind because she knew not where, or how, to look for the things a writer needs to be a writer.

Database Design for Mere Mortals®: A Hands-On Guide to Relational Database Design (2nd Edition)

Database Design for Mere Mortals®: A Hands-On Guide to Relational Database Design (2nd Edition)

“This book takes the somewhat daunting process of database design and breaks it into completely manageable and understandable components. Mike’s approach whilst simple is completely professional, and I can recommend this book to any novice database designer.”      –Sandra Barker, Lecturer, University of South Australia, Australia “Databases are a critical infrastructure technology for information systems and today’s business. Mike Hernandez has written a literate explanation of database technology–a topic that is intricate and often obscure. If you design databases yourself, this book will educate you about pitfalls and show you what to do. If you purchase products that use a database, the book explains the technology so that you can understand what the vendor is doing and assess their products better.”      –Michael Blaha, consultant and trainer, author of A Manager’s Guide to Database Technology “If you told me that Mike Hernandez could improve on the first edition of Database Design for Mere Mortals I wouldn’t have believed you, but he did! The second edition is packed with more real-world examples, detailed explanations, and even includes database-design tools on the CD-ROM! This is a must-read for anyone who is even remotely interested in relational database design, from the individual who is called upon occasionally to create a useful tool at work, to the seasoned professional who wants to brush up on the fundamentals. Simply put, if you want to do it right, read this book!”      –Matt Greer, Process Control Development, The Dow Chemical Company “Mike’s approach to database design is totally common-sense based, yet he’s adhered to all the rules of good relational database design. I use Mike’s books in my starter database-design class, and I recommend his books to anyone who’s interested in learning how to design databases or how to write SQL queries.”      –Michelle Poolet, President, MVDS, Inc. “Slapping together sophisticated applications with poorly designed data will hurt you just as much now as when Mike wrote his first edition, perhaps even more. Whether you’re just getting started developing with data or are a seasoned pro; whether you've read Mike’s previous book or this is your first; whether you're happier letting someone else design your data or you love doing it yourself–this is the book for you. Mike’s ability to explain these concepts in a way that’s not only clear, but fun, continues to amaze me.”      –From the Foreword by Ken Getz, MCW Technologies, coauthor ASP.NET Developer's JumpStart “The first edition of Mike Hernandez’s book Database Design for Mere Mortals was one of the few books that survived the cut when I moved my office to smaller quarters. The second edition expands and improves on the original in so many ways. It is not only a good, clear read, but contains a remarkable quantity of clear, concise thinking on a very complex subject. It’s a must for anyone interested in the subject of database design.”      –Malcolm C. Rubel, Performance Dynamics Associates “Mike’s excellent guide to relational database design deserves a second edition. His book is an essential tool for fledgling Microsoft Access and other desktop database developers, as well as for client/server pros. I recommend it highly to all my readers.”     –Roger Jennings, author of Special Edition Using Access 2002 “There are no silver bullets! Database technology has advanced dramatically, the newest crop of database servers perform operations faster than anyone could have imagined six years ago, but none of these technological advances will help fix a bad database design, or capture data that you forgot to include! Database Design for Mere Mortals™, Second Edition, helps you design your database right in the first place!”      –Matt Nunn, Product Manager, SQL Server, Microsoft Corporation “Wh

Practical Acceptance Sampling: A Hands-On Guide [2nd Edition]

Practical Acceptance Sampling: A Hands-On Guide [2nd Edition]

Practical Acceptance Sampling is a hands-on introduction to the inspection of products and services for quality assurance using statistically-based sampling plans. In today’s era of global supply chains, the path from raw materials to final product often takes place over multiple companies and across multiple continents. Acceptance sampling is key in the 21st century environment. Acceptance sampling plans provide criteria and decision rules for determining whether to accept or reject a batch based on a sample. They are therefore widely used by manufacturers, suppliers, contractors and subcontractors, and service providers in a wide range of industries. The book introduces readers to the most popular sampling plans, including Military Standards and civilian ISO and ANSI/ASQC/BS standards. It covers the design, choice and performance evaluation of different types of plans, including single- and double-stage plans, rectifying and non-rectifying plans, plans for pass/fail and continuous measurements, continuous sampling plans, and more. Practical Acceptance Sampling is suitable for courses on quality control and for quality practitioners with basic knowledge of statistics. It offers clear explanations, examples, end-of-chapter problems, and illustrations of state-of-the-art online resources. Methods are illustrated using Microsoft Excel, online calculators, and SQCOnline.com. However, any statistical software can be used with the book. New to the second edition: A section on Acceptance-on-Zero plans, additional screenshots from the newly-designed SQCOnline.com with several new calculators, and improved book design for enhanced readability.
