Incesticide (180 Gram LP)

Incesticide (180 Gram LP)

Buying time and thwarting bootleggers, Nirvana and DGC released the rarities compilation 'Incesticide' toward the end of 1992. Like any odds'n'sods collection, this is uneven, but that's its charm since it captures Nirvana's character better than any official album. After all, this was a band that was born equally from '70s sludge metal, bubblegum pop, post-punk artiness, and indie rock inclusiveness, each of which are apparent on this collection. There are some non-entities here, particularly on the second side, but the plodding sub-metallic grind was part of their identity, one part of their multi-faceted character.Nirvana meant everything to everyone, from the jangle pop veterans to the garage rock ravers that worshiped the Stooges to stoner metal fetishes and indie rock bed-sits that adopted Sebadoh just as they outgrew Morrissey - everybody loved Nirvana, and there's something for every kind of fan here, thanks to murky sludge, Devo and Vaselines covers, BBC sessions, instrumentals, and limited-edition singles, plus sub-Melvins goop; everything visceral where 'Bleach' was tame. 'Nevermind' doesn't capture this freewheeling indie spirit but 'Incesticide' does, piling on some essentials in the meantime - the pummeling 'Dive,' the childhood snapshot 'Sliver,' the terrific forgotten indie pop tune 'Been a Son,' and 'Aneurysm,' perhaps the greatest single song the group ever recorded. Yeah, there's some filler here, but this is the sound of what Nirvana was actually like.

Power of the Picts

Power of the Picts

Digitally remastered two CD set from the late '60s/early '70s Scottish rockers featuring their very rare original Power of The Picts LP and Middle Earth label single plus a bevy of unreleased tracks and rarities. Liner notes include an interview with band's leader Jake Scott. Scottish Heavy Rock band The Writing On The Wall made it big on the underground Rock scene in the late '60s through a highly dramatic stage act. The Middle Earth club launched a label with this maniacal Rock band as lead off act, releasing a single and LP in 1969. Both items today are rare, and highly collectable, holding their worth in the Price Guides. These items form Disc One of this Power of the Picts double CD collection, its title repeating the title of the only LP. The rest of Disc Two contains the best of the other recordings made during 1971-1973 , including two stand out rockers in 'Man Of Renown' and 'Bellyful of Rock' ,recorded for a Scottish TV show . Ork. 2007.

Empty Monkey

Empty Monkey

Barrie McAskill was the lead singer, band leader and driving force of one of the greatest progressive soul / R&B institutions in the annals of Australian rock and pop history: Levi Smith's Clefs. Their sole LP, the pioneering heavy soul classic Empty Monkey, has been a much requested title in our reissue series, as it meets both collector's requirements: not only it is very collectable, it is a bona-fide Aussie classic (possibly the best Aussie 70's LP you've never heard). Buried Treasure Whilst searching for the masters, we lucked upon the master tapes of, not only their Empty Monkey, but many of their singles and EP tracks - PLUS the master tapes of Empty Monkey: The First Sessions from late 1969. This live run-through, recorded in the early hours of the morning - straight after a gig - was originally thought "too loose" to release, so the band were allowed to record it again. Listening to it today, it is an unexpected delight, a testament to the live power of the band. The only known copy was a warped and scratched acetate, so the remastered version from the original masters is a revelation. It is, in fact, different enough and, more importantly, so magnificent, that we had no choice but to expand our release from one to two CD's! Digitally remastered by (one-time member of The Clefs: Gil Matthews). Deluxe 8 panel digi-pak, double CD, a 24 page booklet with many rare photos and liner notes by Ian McFarlane.
