Cinema Paradiso Blu-ray Disc

Cinema Paradiso Blu-ray Disc

A nostalgic look at a young boy's coming-of-age in postwar Italy and his fascination with a small local cinema CINEMA PARADISO from director Giuseppe Tornatore is a famed and beloved classic. "Alfredo is dying." Those words jolt the successful filmmaker Salvatore played as a child by Salvatore Cascio as a teen by Marco Leonardi and as an adult by Jacques Perrin into contemplating his childhood and the hours he spent in the projection booth of his adored local movie theater Cinema Paradiso. Alfredo Philippe Noiret owner of the moviehouse befriended and encouraged young Salvatore known as "Toto" as he grew up in his small Sicilian home town ravaged by the horrors of the war. The cinema offered escape and fantasy to the townspeople including Toto's mother a grieving war widow. In one breathtaking scene a popular comedy is projected onto the walls of the town square and the entire town glows in the dreamy light of projected celluloid washing away the harsh realities of poverty and grief. As Toto grows to manhood his friendship with his mentor deepens. With the love and guidance of the aging man Toto navigates the trials of first love and builds on his ever-growing passion for the cinema. Ultimately it is Alfredo who convinces Toto to leave his village to pursue his dreams of becoming a director. But as Salvatore thinks back on his youthful romances and his innocent love of movies he comes to realize that perhaps his success has come at a very high price. A beautifully filmed tribute to the power of movies that captivated an entire generation of filmgoers CINEMA PARADISO is an unforgettable masterpiece.

Unwanted Cinema

Unwanted Cinema

In 1936, director Henry Koster's first Hollywood film Three Smart Girls premiered. As Koster waited in the lobby of the movie theater, the Jewish émigré from Germany knew the film's success was literally a do-or-die situation. If the audience laughed, he figured he had a future in the U.S. If not, he would probably go back to Europe and be killed. After five minutes, hysterical laughter reached the lobby and Koster knew he had a career. For Koster and many Jewish filmmakers--actors, actresses, writers, directors and other creative talents--the rise of Hitler and the Nazi party first threatened their livelihoods and soon their lives. In 1934 the exclusion of Jewish filmmakers in Germany led to independent productions in Budapest and Vienna-the so-called "Unwanted Cinema" banned by the Nazis. As the Nazis invaded Hungary and Austria, many artists fled to the U.S. and hoped for a future in Hollywood. For Koster and other behind-the-camera talent, their heavy European accents were not a great hindrance. For some actors, though, the English language proved an insurmountable barrier. Unwanted Cinema profiles a number of Jewish artists who contributed to independent films produced in Vienna and Budapest between 1934 and 1937. The film follows them in subsequent years, as they sought refuge from the Nazi terror, both in Europe and the states. Some found great success, while others paid the ultimate price for being a Jew. In addition to Koster, the film focuses on Ernst Verebes, Otto Wallburg, Felix Joachimson (Jackson), Hans Jaray, Franziska Gaal, Rosy Barsony, Hortense Raky, Oskar Pilzer, and Zoltan Vidor. Featuring scenes from many films of the period, Unwanted Cinema also recounts the efforts of Hollywood producer Joseph Pasternak, who offered many of these men and women their best chance of survival.

Avant-Garde 3: Experimental Cinema 1922-1954

Avant-Garde 3: Experimental Cinema 1922-1954

From GEORGE EASTMAN HOUSE and THE RAYMOND ROHAUER COLLECTIONFrom the little theaters of the 1920s to the ad hoc film societies of the 50s, avant-garde cinema knew no established form and held no predictable position. The boundaries of its history are still hotly debated, but its rough sensibilities informed and permeated the city symphonies of Alberto Cavalcanti, the visual music of Mary Ellen Bute and John Whitney, the classroom films of Sidney Peterson, the confessional film poems of Willard Maas and John E. Schmitz, the Lettrist cinema of Marc O, and even marginal exploitation films and home movies. Drawn from the rich collections of Raymond Rohauer and the George Eastman House, Kino s third volume of experimental films continues to illuminate the degree to which cinema s evolution has been influenced by those filmmakers who occupy its periphery.DISC ONE:DANSE MACABRE (US 1922 Color Tinted 6 Min.) Jaikant sends one of his henchmen to sign in his place. An angry Bajirao Singham demands that Jaikant come in person for the signature and this starts tensions between them. Jaikant, unable to do anything because the town is under the control of Bajirao Singham and his supporters, leaves humiliated. Inglourious Basterds DVD

Inglourious Basterds DVD

A group of hardened Nazi killers stalk their prey in Nazi-occupied France as a Jewish cinema owner plots to take down top-ranking SS officers during the official premiere of a high-profile German propaganda film. As far as Lt. Aldo Raine -- aka "Aldo the Apache" Brad Pitt -- is concerned the only good Nazi is a dead Nazi. Raine's mission is to strike fear into the heart of Adolf Hitler by brutally murdering as many goose-steppers as possible or die trying. In order to accomplish that goal Lt. Raine recruits a ruthless team of cold-blooded killers known as "The Basterds" which includes baseball-bat-wielding Bostonian Sgt. Donnie Donowitz aka "The Bear Jew" Eli Roth and steely psychopath Sgt. Hugo Stiglitz Til Schweiger among others. When the Basterds' secret rendezvous with turncoat German actress Bridget von Hammersmark Diane Kruger goes awry they learn that the Nazis will be staging the French premiere of "The Nation's Pride" a rousing propaganda film based on the exploits of German hero Fredrick Zoller Daniel Brhl at a modest theater owned by Jewish cinephile Shoshanna Dreyfus Mlanie Laurent posing as a Gentile after the brutal murder of her family by the ruthless Col. Hans Landa Christoph Waltz. As the Basterds hatch an explosive plan to take out as many Nazis as possible at the premiere they remain completely oblivious to the fact that Shoshanna too longs to bring the Third Reich to its knees and that she's willing to sacrifice her beloved theater in the process.

Stachka

Stachka

Sergei Eisenstein's debut film is more than a landmark of Soviet cinema; it's easily one of the most thrilling and inventive films to emerge from the silent era of Russian filmmaking. Eisenstein was a theater director and stage designer with some very specific ideas about the cinema, and he put them into practice telling the story of a worker's strike in pre-Revolution Russia, portraying the struggle not of leader against leader, but of the proletariat against the factory owners, enlivened by a conspiratorial subplot involving a quartet of insidious spies sent to infiltrate the ranks of labor. The subject matter is at times didactic and the acting often hammy and overwrought, but the technique is vibrant and the images striking. Eisenstein's compositions reflect the graphic boldness of contemporary poster art, mixing poetic realism with grotesque expressionism in a gripping style, and his famous montage editing style (to be perfected in his next film, Potemkin) is raw, experimental, and energetic. Eisenstein's later films are more consistent and elegant, but none of them have the sheer cinematic invention and energy of this first film. The new score composed and performed by the idiosyncratic Alloy Orchestra combines a mix of martial and mood music on synthesizer with the driving percussion of drums, wood blocks, bells, and wrecking yard of clanging metal objects--a dynamic soundtrack to one of the most auspicious directoral debuts ever. --Sean Axmaker
