Missing Reels: Lost Films of American and European Cinema

Missing Reels: Lost Films of American and European Cinema

During the first half of this century, motion pictures were often considered disposable once their circulations were over. The recycling of used film and the use of components for war efforts contributed to the loss of many movies, as did the unstable nature of the nitrate film itself. The loss of extant works has created gaps in the national cinematic history of the United States and most European countries. Eighty percent of all Western-made films produced before World War I are considered lost, while 15 percent of the films made from 1930 to 1950 are also missing. Here are descriptions of nearly 1,000 of the lost American and European films produced between 1900 and 1950, featuring the talents of the still famous as well as the now obscure. The films are arranged by country and reveal the remarkably prolific early filmmaking in countries like the Netherlands and Sweden. Each entry includes production information, cast, synopsis, history, and insights from reviews when available. Photographs from these films provide glimpses of what once was. An extensive index is included.

Reframing Difference - Carrie Tarr (paperback)

Reframing Difference - Carrie Tarr (paperback)

This is the first major study of two overlapping strands of contemporary French cinema, "cinéma beur" (films by young directors of Maghrebi immigrant origin) and "cinéma de banlieue" (films set in France's disadvantaged outer-city estates). Carrie Tarr's insightful account draws on a wide range of films, from directors such as Mehdi Charef, Mathieu Kassowitz and Djamel Bensalah. Foregrounding such issues as the quest for identity, the negotiation of space and the recourse to memory and history, she argues that these films challenge and reframe the symbolic spaces of French culture, addressing issues of ethnicity and difference which are central to today's debates about what it means to be French.

Madness and Cinema

Madness and Cinema

Madness and Cinema offers a radical approach to the issue of what happens when we watch films. By exploring cinema s relationship to meaning and proposing new ways to read cinema through psychoanalysis, this book develops the idea that the spectator engages in what has previously been described as an act of madness. By considering some of the key concepts from Freud and Lacan, as well as ideas from Derrida and Foucault, we are shown the common features that cinema and madness share. The film spectator is shown as the psychotic, neurotic and hysteric, as the book examines the ways in which the foundations of culture and meaning are challenged when we become the spectator of a film.

Diane Kurys By Carrie Tarr

Diane Kurys By Carrie Tarr

Carrie Tarr's analysis of the cinema of Diane Kurys is the first full-length study of this director, whose delightfully unsentimental reconstructions of the lives of girls and women in post-war France have established her as a distinctive presence in contemporary French film-making. Tarr traces Kurys' trajectory from actress to author, director and producer of her own films and situates her work within debates on women's film-making and female authorship. The book includes detailed readings of each of Kurys' films to date, from the evocation of growing up in the 1960s in Diabolo Menthe to the dilemmas facing contemporary women artists in A la Folie. The conclusion defines Kurys' "authorial signature" and discusses the extent to which she has been able to create a space for female subjectivity within the constraints of contemporary French culture.

A History of Italian Cinema

A History of Italian Cinema

An unprecedented survey of Italian film from the leading expert in the fieldA History of Italian Cinema is a major new study from the author of the bestselling Italian Cinema — which has been published in three landmark editions and celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary in 2008. Building upon his decades of research, Peter Bondanella has now written the definitive history of the subject, from the birth of cinema to the present day. He has rethought, reorganized, and completely rewritten his previous work, which focused on postwar cinema, and has broadened his coverage of the spaghetti western and comedy genres. Bondanella also now covers a huge range of work that was not previously considered, particularly both popular and 'B' genres, including: the sword and sandal epic or "peplum" film of the 1950s; the Italian horror film, the so-called spaghetti nightmare films (including the subcategories of horror, the Italian zombie and cannibal films), that began in the 1950s and continue through the present; the giallo or Italian mystery thriller; and the poliziesco or Italian crime film from the 1970s to the present. This new book also examines the emergence of a "third wave" of new auteurs born in the 1950s as well as an even younger group of important directors born in the 1960s who have already made their mark on the direction of the Italian cinema in the third millennium. Finally, A History of Italian Cinema now includes the most comprehensive bibliography of the subject ever to be assembled in an English-language publication. Erudite, comprehensive, and heavily illustrated throughout, this is an essential purchase for any fan of Italian film.Praise for Bondanella's previous work in the field: "Extremely interesting and stimulating."—Bernardo Bertolucci "A very good book and a very accurate one."—Federico Fellini "The librarian who does not get Bondanella immediately must be petitioned, picketed, importuned."—Choice "To measure the progress and development of Anglo-American studies on Italian cinema, one needs only to consider Peter Bondanella's pioneering and seminal Italian Cinema...Bondanella's work carries the crucial merit of having opened up a panoramic view of Italian national cinema to Anglo-American film scholars who in general were mostly familiar with only a few masterpieces. Over the years, Bondanella's systematic approach has enabled and inspired countless studies."—Gian Piero Brunetta, Professor of History and Film Criticism, University of Padua, Italy >

Island On The Edge: Taiwan Cinema And After

Island On The Edge: Taiwan Cinema And After

Taiwanese film, once an acquired taste, is now approaching the mainstream of art house and even purely commercial cinema. Along with such famed directors as Ang Lee, Hou Hsiao Hsien and Edward Yang and such blockbusters as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon are directors and projects that reflect Taiwan's cultural development, its role in the Cold War and its aftermath, decolonization and modernity. Berry (film and television studies, U. of London) and Lu (communications, National Chengchi U.) pay close attention to a number of films that serve as indicators of the approach of Taiwan New Cinema in the 1980s and the waves that followed. They and their contributors work from film to film, tracing the social elements that make up the characters, narratives and visuals of such films as A Borrowed Life, City of Sadness and A Bright Summer Day, while also tracking the development of prominent Taiwanese directors.
