Cscl: Theory and Practice of An Emerging Paradigm (Computers, Cognition, and Work)

Cscl: Theory and Practice of An Emerging Paradigm (Computers, Cognition, and Work)

This book, about a newly emerging area of research in instructional technology, has as its title the acronym "CSCL." Initially, CSCL was chosen as an acronym for Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning. However, some would argue that "collaborative" is often not a descriptive term for what learners do in instructional settings; further, as the field develops, the technology used to support collaboration may not always involve computers, at least not in the direct ways they have been used to support instruction in the past. To avoid getting bogged down in this terminological debate, this book uses CSCL as a designation in its own right, leaving open to interpretation precisely what words it stands for. The authors talk a great deal about the theory underlying their work. In part, this is because that is what they were asked to do, but it is also an indication of the state of the field. In an established paradigm in which the theories and methods are well agreed upon, such discussion is less central. CSCL, however, has not yet reached the stage of "normal" science. There is much to be worked out yet. This book is offered with the hope that it will help to define a direction for future work in this field. The chapters appear in alphabetical order (except for the introductory chapter and the afterword) -- not for lack of a better way to organize the chapters, but rather because the organizational possibilities are too numerous and this order does not privilege one over another. By not imposing a topical organizing structure on this collection, it is hoped that readers will feel freer to explore the chapters in a way that best suits their needs. What is a Heaven For?

What is a Heaven For?

Father Tom Leonard is a spiritual, talented priest who has been mentored by his pastor in parish work for almost twenty years. Now he feels that he is ready to do more for the Lord, but he is shocked at the assignment the Bishop gives him. He is to create a new parish in a downtrodden part of the city, by splitting off half of an old Italian parish and merge it with a newly developing ethnic area of lower wage people. He will have a starter church constructed for him but he must find some place to start his first Sunday masses. His rectory will be a one hundred fifty year old refurbished mansion. What the Bishop doesn't tell him is that a retired city garbage dump adjoins his property. What neither the Bishop nor Tom knows is that the dishonest City Council President has entered into a deal with nefarious agents to have toxic chemicals buried in the dump at night. Severe weather and construction delays prevent his church from being completed. The pastor of the church he is dividing is uncooperative. His new associate priests fresh from the seminary arrive late and with no church built strike out on their own. Few parishioners join his church. The smell from the dump becomes more prominent. His complaints set him against the Council President. A small cadre of loyal Catholics join his church but they are so used to the dump they can't get aroused against it. Father Leonard's faith begins to flag. The attraction of his sexton's beautiful daughter becomes another impediment to his ministry. At the behest of his young associates he concedes to run a carnival to raise funds. A disastrous event occurs at the carnival and Father Leonard considers leaving the priesthood. In an exciting conclusion Father Leonard gains his redemption in a stand off withe the dump and the City Council President.

What is a Just Peace?

What is a Just Peace?

Just war has attracted considerable attention. The words peace and justice are often used together. Surprisingly, however, little conceptual thinking has gone into what constitutes a just peace. This book, which includes some of the world's leading scholars, debates and develops the concept of just peace. The problem with the idea of a just peace is that striving for justice may imply a just war. In other words, peace and justice clash at times. Therefore, one often starts from a given view of what constitutes justice, but this a priori approach leads--especially when imposed from the outside--straight into discord. This book presents conflicting viewpoints on this question from political, historical, and legal perspectives as well as from a policy perspective. This book also argues that a just peace is a mediated peace. It is just, because it is based on conventions that are negotiated and recognized by the parties. Mutual recognition is central: parties recognize each other as agents that have an identity. Consent is necessary, too: all parties need to approve a solution; therefore, each party needs to understand what allows the other to remain "self." And renouncement: concessions are necessary, some symbols and positions need to be sacrificed. In this sense, the Geneva Initiative--the first comprehensive Israeli-Palestinian peace plan--is a mediated peace. Thus the book challenges a liberal view of peace founded on norms claiming universal scope. This liberal conception has difficulty in solving conflicts such as civil wars characterized typically by fundamental disagreements between different communities. Cultures make demands that are identity-defining, and some of these defy the "cultural neutrality" that is one of the foundations of liberalism. Thus, the concept of just peace cannot be solved within liberalism--nor for that matter within communitarianism.

Fax Me A Bagel

Fax Me A Bagel

Follow the bagel crumbs as this savvy, heartwarming new series welcomes an enchanting sleuth, Ruby, the Rabbi's Wife, who dodges a cunning killer from her favorite bakery in Eternal, Texas, to the streets of New York's Lower East Side. Ruby has been a widow for more than a year now, since the hit-and-run death of her beloved husband, Stu. She should be free to start a new life, but once a rabbi's wife, always a rabbi's wife, at least in Eternal. You never graduate. Ruby can't even escape her least favorite member of the congregation, Essie Sue Margolis -- who wears designer clothes to take out the garbage. Ruby figures she should be safe from Essie Sue at eleven in the morning at The Hot Bagel. Wrong. Essie Sue is there in a white silk ensemble never touched by human hands. Ruby's smudged tee shirt does not impress. Still, The Hot Bagel makes the best baked goods west of the Hudson, and Ruby's not about to miss her favorite morning fix. It comes at a higher price than fashion embarrassment, however, as Ruby soon discovers that she has more on her proverbial plate than poppy seeds. Marla, sister of the much disliked Essie Sue, goes into a convulsion and dies, leaving not only her bagels on the table but more unanswered questions than Ruby could ever have imagined. Was Marla's death an accident? Was it part of a plan? How does it fit into other unexplained deaths in the small Texas community that straddles the worlds of the plantation South and the rugged West? In a romp through Jewish life filled with love and laughter, Ruby encounters more than mayhem. She watches in horror when the temple selection committee finally chooses a rabbi who thinks Essie Sue is the best thing since automated High Holy Day ticketing. Here comes double-trouble. Author Sharon Kahn, who spent thirty-one years as a rabbi's wife, captures that life in a novel that is genuine and original. Beneath the irony, mystery, and humor lies a cautionary tale in which Ruby's values come shining through, and her intrepid detective work ensures that she'll live to sleuth another day.

What is a Print?

What is a Print?

What is a print? This volume aims to answer that question by exploring the four basic printmaking techniques--woodcut, intaglio, lithography and screenprint--that have been used to create some of the most iconic images in modern art, from Paul Gauguin's Noa Noa to Andy Warhol's Marilyn Monroe. Illustrated with works from The Museum of Modern Art's superlative collection of prints, the book is divided into four sections that provide an overview introduction to each technique. Each section presents approximately 40 prints that demonstrate the range and variety of a particular technique and illustrate its development over the last century. Extended captions highlight the distinctive visual effects unique to each technique, and examine issues specific to printmaking, such as democratic ideas about distribution and social and political function. Featured works range from Edvard Munch's radical woodcut experiments from the 1890s to Kelley Walker's digital experiments of the last several years, and include prints by modern masters like Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró as well as those made by a roster of international contemporary artists who continue to explore and expand these techniques today.
