The Network Is Your Customer - Rogers, David L.

The Network Is Your Customer - Rogers, David L.

There is no shortage of books about digital media, but what has been missing is a strategic take on how business owners can utilize the most powerful asset of the digital age: customer networks. Whether shoppers, business clients, charitable donors, or election voters, today’s customers are harnessing digital tools to connect to, communicate with, and contribute to businesses. In The Network Is Your Customer, digital strategy expert David Rogers shows business owners and company leaders how to think strategically about customer networks and harness their power to create new opportunities for any organization. By identifying the five core behaviors of networked customers—accessing, engaging, customizing, connecting, and collaborating—he uncovers five core strategies that any organization can use to create new value. These strategies can be used not just for communications and social networking but to drive sales, enhance innovation,

Working-Class Network Society: Communication Technology and the Information Have-Less in Urban China (Information Revolution and Global Politics)

Working-Class Network Society: Communication Technology and the Information Have-Less in Urban China (Information Revolution and Global Politics)

The idea of the "digital divide," the great social division between information haves and have-nots, has dominated policy debates and scholarly analysis since the 1990s. In Working-Class Network Society, Jack Linchuan Qiu describes a more complex social and technological reality in a newly mobile, urbanizing China. Qiu argues that as inexpensive Internet and mobile phone services become available and are closely integrated with the everyday work and life of low-income communities, they provide a critical seedbed for the emergence of a new working class of "network labor" crucial to China's economic boom. Between the haves and have-nots, writes Qiu, are the information "have-less": migrants, laid-off workers, micro-entrepreneurs, retirees, youth, and others, increasingly connected by cybercafés, prepaid service, and used mobile phones. A process of class formation has begun that has important implications for working-class network society in China and beyond. Qiu brings class back into the scholarly discussion, not as a secondary factor but as an essential dimension in our understanding of communication technology as it is shaped in the vast, industrializing society of China. Basing his analysis on his more than five years of empirical research conducted in twenty cities, Qiu examines technology and class, networked connectivity and public policy, in the context of massive urban reforms that affect the new working class disproportionately. The transformation of Chinese society, writes Qiu, is emblematic of the new technosocial reality emerging in much of the Global South.

Not-So-Nuclear Families: Class, Gender, and Networks of Care

Not-So-Nuclear Families: Class, Gender, and Networks of Care

"In vivid portraits drawn from the top and bottom of the social-class ladder, Hansen shows the profound effect social class has on care. Well observed, beautifully written, this book is a must read." --Arlie Hochschild, author of The Commercialization of Intimate Lives: Notes from Home and Work "Not-So-Nuclear Families explains the often painful choices that parents have to make for their children's--and their own--well-being." --Barbara Schnieder, professor of sociology and human development, director of the Data Research and Development Center, and codirector of the Alfred P. Sloan Center on Parents, Children, and Work at the University of Chicago In recent years, U.S. public policy has focused on strengthening the nuclear family as a primary strategy for improving the lives of America's youth. It is often assumed that this normative type of family is an independent, self-sufficient unit adequate for raising children. But half of all households in the United States with young children have two employed parents. How do working parents provide care and mobilize the help that they need? In Not-So-Nuclear Families, Karen V. Hansen investigates the lives of working parents and the informal networks they construct to help care for their children. She chronicles the conflicts, hardships, and triumphs of four families of various social classes. Each must navigate the ideology that mandates that parents, mothers in particular, rear their own children, in the face of an economic reality that requires that parents rely on the help of others. In vivid family stories, parents detail how they and their network of friends, paid caregivers, and extended kin collectively close the "care gap" for their school-aged children. Hansen not only debunks the myth that families in the United States are independent, isolated, and self-reliant units, she breaks new theoretical ground by asserting that informal networks of care can potentially provide unique and valuable bonds that nuclear families cannot. Karen V. Hansen is an associate professor of sociology and women's studies at Brandeis University and is the coeditor of Families in the U.S.: Kinship and Domestic Politics.

Exploring The Networked Worlds Of Popular Music: Milieu

Exploring The Networked Worlds Of Popular Music: Milieu

Webb, not further identified, develops a theory of milieu cultures that recognizes the importance of class, location, knowledge, and economics, but repositions them in a theoretical matrix that looks more closely at the complexity of modern life within worlds of popular music since the 1960s. He combines phenomenological frameworks, concepts of Pierre Bourdieu, and dialectical or network relationships to illuminate different musical worlds and how they operate. C# Network Programming

C# Network Programming

On its own, C# simplifies network programming. Combine it with the precise instruction found in C# Network Programming, and you'll find that building network applications is easier and quicker than ever. This book helps newcomers get started with a look at the basics of network programming as they relate to C#, including the language's network classes, the Winsock interface, and DNS resolution. Spend as much time here as you need, then dig into the core topics of the network layer. You'll learn to make sockets connections via TCP and "connectionless" connections via UDP. You'll also discover just how much help C# gives you with some of your toughest chores, such as asynchronous socket programming, multithreading, and multicasting.Network-layer techniques are just a means to an end, of course, and so this book keeps going, providing a series of detailed application-layer programming examples that show you how to work with real protocols and real network environments to build and implement a variety of applications. Use SNMP to manage network devices, SMTP to communicate with remote mail servers, and HTTP to Web-enable your applications. And use classes native to C# to query and modify Active Directory entries.Rounding it all out is plenty of advanced coverage to push your C# network programming skills to the limit. For example, you'll learn two ways to share application methods across the network: using Web services and remoting. You'll also master the security features intrinsic to C# and .NET--features that stand to benefit all of your programming projects.
