Southern Folk Medicine, 1750-1820

Southern Folk Medicine, 1750-1820

Southern Folk Medicine, 1750-1820 explores methods of cure during a time when the South relied more heavily on homespun remedies than on professionally prescribed treatments. Bringing to light several previously unpublished primary sources, Kay K. Moss inventories the medical ingredients and practices adopted by physicians, herb women, yeoman farmers, plantation mistresses, merchants, tradesmen, preachers, and quacks alike. Moss shows how families passed down cures as heirlooms, how remedies crossed cultural and ethnic boundaries, and how domestic healers compounded native herbs and plants with exotic ingredients. Moss assembles her picture of domestic medical practice largely from an analysis of twelve commonplace books--or repositories of information, medical and otherwise--kept by eighteenth- and nineteenth-century southerners. She reveals that men and women of all social classes collected medical guidance and receipts in handwritten journals. Whether well educated or unlettered, many preferred home remedies over treatment by the region's few professional physicians.Of particular interest to natural historians, an extensive guide to medicinal plants, their scientific names, and their traditional uses is also included.

Healing Traditions: African Medicine, Cultural Exchange, & Competition in South Africa, 1820-1948 (New African Histories)

Healing Traditions: African Medicine, Cultural Exchange, & Competition in South Africa, 1820-1948 (New African Histories)

In August 2004, South Africa officially legalized the practice of traditional healers. Largely in response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic, and limited both by the number of practitioners and by patients' access to treatment, biomedical practitioners looked toward the country's traditional healers as important agents in the development of medical education and treatment. This collaboration has not been easy. The two medical cultures embrace different ideas about the body and the origin of illness, but they do share a history of commercial and ideological competition and different relations to state power.Healing Traditions: African Medicine, Cultural Exchange, and Competition in South Africa, 1820-1948provides a long-overdue historical perspective to these interactions and an understanding that is vital for the development of medical strategies to effectively deal with South Africa's healthcare challenges.Between 1820 and 1948 traditional healers in Natal, South Africa, transformed themselves from politically powerful men and women who challenged colonial rule and law into successful entrepreneurs who competed for turf and patients with white biomedical doctors and pharmacists. To understand what is “traditional” about traditional medicine, Flint argues that we must consider the cultural actors not commonly  associated with African therapeutics: white biomedical practitioners, Indian healers, and the implementing of white rule.Carefully crafted, well written, and powerfully argued, Flint's analysis of the ways that indigenous medical knowledge and therapeutic practices were forged, contested, and transformed over two centuries is highly illuminating, as is her demonstration that many “traditional” practices changed over time. Her discussion of African and Indian medical encounters opens up a whole new way of thinking about the social basis of health and healing in South Africa. This important book will be core reading for classes and future scholarship on health and healing in South Africa.

Alli-C

Alli-C

Product Description British chemist Peter Josling developed a way to stabilize the Allicin from Garlic for the first time in history and incorporated it into his flagship product Alli-C. That means you now have available the microbe-destroying and healing power of Garlic multiplied many times over. One capsule of Alli-C gives the equivalent health benefits of eating 36 cloves of fresh raw Garlic. Each capsule provides 270 mg pure stabilized Allicin from Garlic along with 60 mg food-based Vitamin C and 40 mg citrus bioflavonoids. This combination has been scientifically proven lethal to disease-causing bacteria, including over 300 strains of MRSA and VRSA. Alli-C does not harm your body's friendly bacteria or cause negative side-effects. The stabilized Allicin in Alli-C is the strongest and safest natural antibiotic known to man. Alli-C kills viruses and fungi, and it drives parasites out of the body. It has been scientifically proven in double-blind studies using low doses to greatly reduce the number, severity, and duration of common colds. Alli-C fights all types of diseases caused by harmful microbes. Alli-C can help lower high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Alli-C can help ease arthritic pain and swelling. Alli-C can be harmful to cancer cells. People and animals taking Alli-C are less apt to be bitten by mosquitoes, fleas, and ticks. Alli-C is not Garlic or a Garlic supplement, but rather makes all Garlic supplements obsolete. The only people who should not take Alli-C are children under 3 years of age and those allergic to Garlic. The normal maintenance dosage of Alli-C for an adult is one capsule per day, but higher amounts may be safely taken for therapeutic purposes. Each bottle of Alli-C contains 30 capsules for a one-month supply at the normal maintenance dosage. Alli-C is made and packaged with pharmaceutical grade materials and grown to GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) agricultural standards.

Plan C: Community Survival Strategies for Peak Oil and Climate Change

Plan C: Community Survival Strategies for Peak Oil and Climate Change

Library Journal This book goes further than any of the other titles considered here, both in terms of the deep societal ills it examines and the radical solutions it proposes. It is not just peak oil, but peak America Murphy takes as his subject. His plan is based on "curtailment" - we must not only make drastic cuts in our use of fossil fuels, but also cut our rates of consumption, buy less, use less, want less, waste less, watch less televsion, eat better foods, give up driving private cars, and become, in short, "a nation with new values." Murphy's work is perhaps easy to dismiss - i.e. fringe, hairshirted- but if, as the best scientific evidence suggests, the world is already in a dangerous state of overshoot, then its message may not be that far out after all. Reviewed by Robert Eagan Canadian Moneysaver Plan C is an indispensable resource for anyone interested in living a lower energy, saner, more sustainable lifestyle. If you accept the plethora of research supporting energy depletion (oil, gas and coal) and climate change globally, you must read this book. Written without big business or a political bias, this objective author provides the framework for future development. Shrewd investors beware. Reviewed by Dale Ennis Concerns over climate change and energy depletion are increasing exponentially. Mainstream solutions still assume a panacea that will cure our climate ills without requiring any serious modification to our way of life. Plan C explores the risks inherent in trying to continue our energy-intensive lifestyle. Using dirtier fossil fuels (Plan A) or switching to renewable energy sources (Plan B) allows people to remain complacent in the face of potential global catastrophe. Dramatic lifestyle change is the only way to begin to create a sustainable, equitable world. The converging crises of Peak Oil, climate change, and increasing inequity are presented in a clear, concise manner, as are the twin solutions of community (where cooperation replaces competition) and curtailment (deliberately reducing consumption of consumer goods). Plan C shows how each person’s individual choices can dramatically reduce CO2 emissions. It offers specific strategies in the areas of food, transportation, and housing. One chapter analyzes the decimation of the Cuban economy when the USSR stopped oil exports in 1990 and provides an inspiring vision for a low-energy way of living. Plan C is an indispensable resource for anyone interested in living a lower-energy, saner, and more sustainable lifestyle. Pat Murphy is the executive director of The Community Solution. He co-wrote and co-produced the award-winning documentary The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil, has initiated four major Peak Oil conferences, and has given numerous presentations and workshops on the subject. He has extensive construction experience and developed low-energy buildings during the nation’s first oil crisis.

C+Zinc

C+Zinc

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is an essential nutrient that the body is unable to produce or store. Studies show that vitamin C is a necessary nutrient in the formation of collagen, the main protein substance in the human body. Vitamin C also helps strengthen blood vessels, and is critical to the immune system, even appearing to aid in the prevention of the common cold. Adequate zinc levels are essential to good health, and are necessary for proper immune system function. A high zinc intake aids protein synthesis and cell growth following any trauma, decreasing wound healing time. Recently, members of the scientific community discovered that zinc, when absorbed orally, may be capable of stopping a cold already in progress by actually killing the rhinovirus on contact. Proven immune-booster vitamin E and essential amino acids L-lysine and L-glycine complete the mix, each adding their own unique benefits to this powerful prevention tool. Don't feel like letting a cold run you down this year? Try VitaMist® C+Zinc.
