Literacy Pledge: For every copy of this book sold in United States, Canada or Europe, we will donate a textbook to a child in need. Find out more about our pledge at www. world-literacy.info. Please also read Author's statement in the "Author's Biography" section. Behind Amazon’s quirky smile logo lurks a cold and calculating giant machine. Author Kalpanik S. reveals his own smile as he tells the somewhat quirky story of his complex, and often hilarious, relationship with Amazon. From the sophisticated wit in his portrayal of the courtship period in “How To Get Hired By Amazon In Ten Days”, to the dark humor of the disillusionment period in “The Cold, Calculating Machine”, Kalpanik’s story is more than just an insider’s view of the giant machine known as Amazon.com. It’s a modern, universal story of the uneasy relationship between an individual and today’s gargantuan corporations. In the end, it is also a story of redemption for creative and freethinking individuals that define America. Acclaim for the book ... not only does the author makes us feel the vitality of the Hi-Tech worlds of California & Seattle but his very emotional experiences as an immigrant, a father and a dislocated worker. I love his leaps of imagination, and the words which hook us in, make us think this is our story. For example, here is what it means to yearn for acceptance: "I looked at Seattle's glistening skyline on one side and its beautiful waterfront on the other and asked it the same questions I had asked San Francisco sixteen years ago: will it accept me? Or will its people treat me as someone different, not one of them?“ Overall, a hip, funny and yet very poignant story! .....John Lehman, author of "Everything is Changing” This edition of the book was revised in December 2011 to include author's perspective on the 2011 Amazon Warehouse scandal, where a detailed investigative report on worker treatment at a regional warehouse by a local newspaper caught national media attention. Confessions of a foreign born author I must confess that English is my third language, and even though this book has been edited by several professional native English editors, it is obvious—even to me— that this book is written by a Foreign-born author. Foreign-born or not, I believe I have a talent for storytelling, and I have converted a dull topic—the transformation of Amazon from a retail website to a marketplace—into an interesting and lively story. This is more of a little book than a big one. Being a technologist, I tend to be concise in my writing. The printed version of this edition is about 220 pages. This may be too little for a few readers, too much for others, and hopefully, just right for the some. So, If you are looking for a 1,000-page treatise on Amazon that can be used as an example of perfect grammar in the High school English grammar class, then this book may not be the right book for you. There are several other books on Amazon which are written in perfect English but are perfectly boring. A book about Amazon can be pretty dry, so I have tried to add some humor. In my attempt to make this book funny, a few facts may have been stretched. I quote this passage from 21 Dog Years: Doing Time @ Amazon.com, written by Mike Daisey, a fellow Amazon alumnus–turned author: “Some facts were injured in the telling of this story. The truth, however, remains unharmed.” That applies to this book as well. To respect the privacy of the people involved in this story, their names have been changed — with one exception. Trust me, there really is a guy named Jeff Bezos who works at Amazon. All in all, I am proud of my work, Enjoy! [Signed] Kalpanik S. Note: Portions of this book have been previously published under titles "Seattle Adventures", "Artificial Imagination" and "Welcome to the USA".

Time Machine

Time Machine

The more things change, the more Alan Parsons albums stay the same. It's entirely fitting that this sonically flawless opus should be called The Time Machine. Born in the excesses and conceptual frenzy of mid-'70s prog rock, Parsons's familiar methodology once again shrewdly employs an almost-star cast of musical vets to do the heavy lifting (among them vocalists Colin Blunstone, Beverly Craven, Spandau Ballet's Tony Hadley, and chief musical architect/guitarist Ian Bairnson). Meanwhile, legendary producer and engineer Parsons twiddles the knobs and slides the levers, just like the Great Oz. Fans will find that Parsons, perhaps the only producer since Phil Spector with big enough cajones to become his own virtual raison d'être, has successfully stayed his familiar course. And if the result is something akin to Pink Floyd lite meets Kenny G in the New Age aisle at your local Natural Wonders outlet, thus has it ever been. While it lyrically renders H.G. Wells's original novel all touchy-feely and virtually unrecognizable, musically it's a reaffirmation that Parsons--not Toto, Journey, or a score of lesser pretenders to the mantle--is the real godfather of corporate rock. Dust off those headphones. Jerry McCulley

Inside the Giant Machine: An Amazon.com Story

On Dec. 14, 2009, customers ordered over 9.5 million items worldwide on Amazon, which is a record-breaking 110 items per second. How large a machine do you need to process and ship this kind of volume? How efficiently do you need operate it? And what kind of people do you need to keep it going? The author, a former Technologist from Amazon.com writing under a pen name, gives us a vivid, sometime brutal inside scoop on Amazon.com's giant machinery, describing its cold and calculating culture in detail. The story begins in Silicon Valley where we go through author's experiences in the fast moving world of a Hi-Tech start up. Soon thereafter, the author's start-up is acquired and he finds himself looking for a job. He finds one in Seattle, a medley of lush green hills surrounded by snow capped mountains and sparking blue waters. Amazon.com--an Internet company based in Seattle which has taken the stock markets by storm, and has been transforming itself from an online retailer to an eCommerce platform, led by a CEO who is not afraid to act goofy. It begins as a story of a technologist leaving behind his beloved Silicon Valley for Seattle. It unfolds into a moving story capturing Seattle's beauty, its interesting people and culture; and the inside scoop on the dot-com world - both the excitement and joy of innovation, and also the dark side of a culture driven by metrics, including "Cruelty curve", a quota for letting go of a certain number of people every year, a gene pool improving methodology by putting the weakest 10% on a chopping block.

Celia's body is not her own, but even her conscious mind can barely tell the difference. Living on the cutting edge of biomechanical science was supposed to allow her to lead a normal life in a near-perfect copy of her physical self while awaiting a cure for a rare and deadly genetic disorder. But a bioandroid isn't a real person. Not according to the protesters outside Celia's house, her coworkers, or even her wife. Not according to her own evolving view of herself. As she begins to strip away the human affectations and inhibitions programmed into her new body, the chasm between the warm pains of flesh-and-blood life and the chilly comfort of the machine begins to deepen. Love, passion, reality, and memory war within Celia's body until she must decide whether to betray old friends or new ones in the choice between human and machine. "I'm not sure anyone else could take material like posthuman politics, kinky sex and body modification, and explicit metaphors for the abortion debate and euthanasia, and turn it all into a heartrending love story, but Jennifer Pelland nails the dismount every time." -NK Jemesin, Hugo-nominated author of The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms

Machine Dreams

Little Dragon return with a spectacular second album offering in August, a pulsating electro pop epic that Prince would be proud of (only fronted by a beautiful Swedish lady with a sultry voice). A bold and surprising side/two step onwards from their self titled debut, released two years ago to great acclaim especially among specialist circles. Machine Dreams, with its nagging hooks and gloriously infectious tunes, should finally see the band break out into the mainstream.Recorded in their home city of Gothenburg, Machine Dreams is a gigantic leap on from previous material but still maintains a distinct sound that can only be Little Dragon. Be it Yukimi s warmly inviting vocals, Erik s dextrous drumming, the vast array of synths and bleeps created by Hakan or Frederik s bubbling bass lines, together they don t sound like anything else around right now. The move towards a more electronic sound was a conscious one, as Yukimi explains; The title Machine Dreams seems obvious. These days, humans seem more and more like machines, and as technology evolves, machines feel more human and it becomes fuzzy and beautiful and science fiction-ish. We feel dependent on our machines to create and live, and their sounds reflect us .Album opener A New breaks us in gently with a single whirring note on the synthesiser, an almost alien sound that gradually morphs into a slow, thumping bassline. Yukimi s vocals flow alongside Hakan s assortment of sound effects interspersed with militaristic drums breaks. A magical opener that sets the scene and seems to sink into itself, taking us with it, until the pace is swiftly ratcheted skywards with Looking Glass , the massive snare, crisp driving beat and experimental synths revealing the band s current penchant for the 80 s. This influence continues apace into stand out track My Step . Utilising a solid drumbeat that nestles next to jagged and playful synthlines, the track breaks down into motorik propulsion with a scuzzy techno bassline that Yukimi works with ease. Upcoming single Feather finds Yukimi s voice at its most detached and blaze, seemingly nonchalant yet magnificently seductive. Backed by Hakan s keyboard atmospherics, the song creates a soundscape reminiscent of Tears For Fears more reflective moods. Gradually layering more vocals, synths, echoes and reverb, it builds to a quietly psychedelic, dreamy cosmic swirl. Runabout brings forth a mini Airto style percussive breakdown at the tail end of yet another Little Dragon pop gem. Swimming bursts forth into vision with stabbing keys and reflective bass alongside yet another wonderful vocal performance from Yukimi who sings of young love and now so many years have past, my memories as clear as glass . The song is over as quickly as it started, flowing into the next miniature masterpiece in the form of Blinking Pigs The album closes with the stunning track Fortune , which has already caught the attention of none other than DJ Shadow. It s no wonder really, as the textured melodies blend with the drifting percussion, creating a blissful sonic mood. With a smattering of drums and bass and the magic of Yukimi s voice and Hakan s electronic dynamics floating on top, it s the perfect track to end this fascinating journey through Little Dragon s brave new world. With disparate influences from Depeche Mode to Prince, LCD Soundsystem to James Holden, Dancehall to R&B, Jazz and Soul, Little Dragon take their place among artists who straddle many genres, yet somehow create their own and in doing so create sounds that make time stop (Yukimi). Futuristic yet somehow retro, Machine Dreams sees Little Dragon achieve something timeless; that elusive pop classic.

A mind-bending fable of science, philosophy, art, history, and love. Fifty-five million years ago, during the early Eocene period, a sudden burst of lightning frightened a herd of small prehistoric horses. In the ensuing panic, one of the horses, a five-year-old mare no bigger than a fox terrier, fell into a lake and drowned. On June 23rd, 1975, in Austin, Texas, a drop of oil combusted in a car engine. This tiny explosion happened just as the Ford Pinto, driven by a one-armed hitchhiker named Jimmy, pulled into the parking lot of the Timber Creek Apartments, home to the young woman in the passenger seat, a twenty-two-year-old biology student named Clarissa Sanders. Machine is the story of the hidden connections between these two seemingly unrelated events. Omnivorous in its pursuit of knowledge - every single one of its eighty-eight pages a daring mixture of fact and fiction, science and art - this short novel relentlessly pursues one of life s great mysteries: where does Fate end and coincidence begin?

My Machine

My Machine

Princess Superstar’s fifth album My Machine is a 25 track, nearly 80-minute concept album. Princess presents a vision of the future in order to critique the present and reinvents herself as a sassy and smart anti-hero. In a world where stars are manufactured and not born she questions where the relationship between art and commerce is headed and attacks the current "Extreme Makeover" culture that turns people into imitations of a nonexistent ideal by promising to make them better versions of themselves, a theme she explores in "Perfect," the first video from the album. At times crazy and hilarious, hideous and alluring, deranged and compelling, she has mapped out an alternate universe on which to provoke and entertain. Recorded over the past three years in Costa Rica, London, New York, Brazil, New Jersey, Mexico, and Berlin, this is Princess’ most ambitious work to date. The album was executive produced by her and the legendary Arthur Baker and also features production work from Jacques Lu Cont, Junior Sanchez, Armand Van Helden, and Todd Terry. She takes her cut’n’paste aesthetic to a new level as she effortlessly switches from the straight up hip-hop of "Famous" to the power punk of "I Like It A Lot" to the sinister electro of "My Machine" to the moody rock of "Artery" and her signature comedic style on "Quitting Smoking Song." This should come as no surprise from a woman who, while working on this album, found the time to be a coach on MTV’s hit show "Made,", join Mensa, tour the world with her 4 turntable act "DJs Are Not Rockstars", have a weekly radio show on London’s Kiss FM, and be profiled in everything from the New York Times’ Style Section to Crain’s Business Magazine! NYC’s rhyming juggernaut is back with a love letter to independence, guaranteed to make brains and dance floors more active than they’ve been in a long time.

Soft Machine

The Soft Machine, co-produced by Chas Chandler and Tom Wilson, announced the band's arrival on the international scene in fine style. With an unusual three-man lineup comprised of Kevin Ayers on bass and vocals, Robert Wyatt on drums and vocals, and Mike Ratledge on keyboards, the album was recorded in New York, while the band was touring North America with the Jimi Hendrix Experience. In contrast to the extended pieces that would later dominate the Soft Machine's repertoire, the album focuses on shorter, more concise songs that nonetheless provide plenty of room for the musicians to demonstrate their varied abilities. The first two albums by England's legendary Soft Machine, originally released in 1968 and 1969, remain among the most innovative and influential releases of that musically fertile era. These seminal LPs offered a visionary psychedelic-progressive-jazz-rock mix that helped to make the Soft Machine one of Britain's first significant underground bands, as well as a key force in the birth of both progressive rock and jazz-rock. A product of the same fabled Canterbury scene that spawned such beloved cult acts as Caravan and Hatfield and the North, the Soft Machine was the rare art-rock combo whose members possessed the instrumental skills to execute their ambitious musical ideas, as well as a playful sense of humor that balanced the band's complex compositions and adventurous improvisations. By the time they began making albums, the Soft Machine was already a sensation in the budding U.K. rock underground, thanks to their now-legendary performances at such fabled London clubs as the UFO, the Speakeasy, and Middle Earth, where they shared stages with the likes of Pink Floyd and Tomorrow.Tracklist1.1 Hope For Happiness 4:20 1.2 Joy Of A Toy 2:49 1.3 Hope For Happiness (Reprise) 1:37 1.4 Why Am I So Short? 1:38 1.5 So Boot If At All 7:22 1.6 A Certain Kind 4:10 2.1 Save Yourself 2:25 2.2 Priscilla 1:05 2.3 Lullabye Letter 4:37 2.4 We Did It Aga

Blood Machine

Blood Machine

Symbiotic blood machines dream of electric bodies while immersed in a light fantastic… This is the next highly-anticipated chapter in the BODY ELECTRIC / LIGHT FANTASTIC story, except this time its a new book altogether. Steve Roach and Vir Unis have pulled out all the stops to create a musical experience that flows with the natural precision of the body's life-blood, by way of a constant enfoldment of hyperstate fractal grooves and luminous soundworlds that are unique to their collaborative spirit. These ideas first explored and developed on Body Electric and Light Fantastic merge to create a multi-dimensional voyage into the lifeblood of the man/machine concept. This project has gone through several phases in its development over the past two years. Numerous pieces were created and set aside as the artists made new discoveries and continued to push the envelope further than ever before. The music was first visualized in stages of constant dialog and conceptualizing along with mapping out of early pieces as a blueprint or schematic. Many of these pieces were absorbed into the blood machine much later in fractalized from as the shape of the music was constantly shifting and morphing into its current form. Like the transparent overlays in a book of human anatomy, the veins, organs, and skin of the body were used as a metaphor as the pieces were born and raised in the bio-electric lab-studio. With both artists working in identical nonlinear hard disk systems, they were able to collaborate on a high level where complete sessions were going back and forth between studios and literally picking up where the other left off. This focus and creative use of the latest technology along with a strong inner vision paved the way for a fusion of collaboration and collective innovation.
