From the Introduction: This translation of the Koran differs from other available English translations, in numerous respects. Most, if not all, available translations use old Arabic interpretations of the Koran as a source for the meaning of words and sentences. In effect, they are translations of those old interpretations rather than translations of the actual text of the Koran. The Koran was revealed in the Arabic language, a very complicated language, as the language was used at the time the revelations occurred. The Koran text should actually speak for itself, to those who are familiar with classical Arabic. Interpretations written hundreds of years ao have nothing to recommend them as having high degrees of accuracy or correctness. Most of these old interpretations were heavily influenced by opinions or conclusions of others, and derived heavily from Hadith. It is basic to Islamic belief that the Koran was revealed for all times and all ages. That by itself excludes fixed interpretations over all times and all ages. It is actually an indication of a certain degree of fluidity and variability of meaning. So actually the text is fixed, the interpretation is variable. In the Koran it is actually stated: "Some of it is clear and some of it is ambiguous" (chapter 3, verse 7). Interpretation of the Koran belongs to anyone who feels qualified to do it. Interpretations can be right in many things and wrong in some. The guide should be the language, logic, and measuring the Koran against iself, such as noting the use of certain words in one place and comparing this with the way they are used in other places. The Koran recognizes no hierarchy for accepted interpretations. The Koran clearly states, "No clergy in Islam". Those who interpret the Koan correctly shall be rewarded by God, and those who do it incorrectly shall be punished by Him, and those who are incapable of interpretation will have to depend on the work of others, and then make a judgement on their own.

Book Description: "This is an anthology of English translations of Pushto poets from the 16th century on. Most, if not all, of these poets are Sufi. They utilize the poetic vocabulary of Sufiism: the tavern, the wine, the flowers, etc., all actually technical terms describing the soul's progression on the mystical path towards God. Raverty's introductory essay, "Remarks on the Mystic Doctrine and Poetry of the Sufis" provides a skeleton key to the symbology.Most of the writers included here were, in addition to being Sufi poets, tribal leaders, men of action, in many cases related in some fashion. For instance, the prolific Khushhal Khan fathered Ashraf Khan and Abd-ul-Kadir Khan, all very formidable poets and warriors. Their poetry reflects a tribal, patriarchal society (women don't normally appear in these texts except as the 'beloved,' or a target of scorn). However, this is not the bleak, bigoted, art and music starved world of the Taliban. It is clear that not all of that Sufi joie de vivre is metaphorical, and many of the verses display a wicked sense of humor. The descriptions of nature are realistic, and their love of country is fierce.Raverty (b. 1825, d. 1906), a Major in the British Army, fought in the Punjab from 1849-50. From 1852-9 he was Assistant Commissioner of the Punjab. His duties involved extensive travel in what is today Pakistan, Afghanistan, and India. He wrote one of the first Pushto grammars in 1855. He also wrote a Pushto-English dictionary, and a volume of Pushto texts in the original language, which served as the basis for these translations. The system of transcription in this book, which is reproduced exactly as in the original with the help of Unicode, is not pretty, but at least is applied consistently. In 1544 Pierre Gilles of Albi, an established scholar and author, arrived in Constantinople as a member of a French diplomatic embassy to Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent. Gilles mission was to find and purchase ancient Greek manuscripts for King François I s humanist library. But while in Constantinople Gilles conceived his own project: to study the history and monuments of the former Byzantine capital on the spot and to publish his findings with what he could learn from the ancient and medieval sources. Japanese Zen often implies that textual learning ( gakumon) in Buddhism and personal experience ( taiken) in Zen are separate, but the career and writings of the Chinese Tang dynasty Chan master Guifeng Zongmi (780-841) undermine this division. For the first time in English, Jeffrey Broughton presents an annotated translation of Zongmi's magnum opus, the Chan Prolegomenon, along with translations of his Chan Letter and Chan Notes. The Chan Prolegomenon persuasively argues that Chan "axiom realizations" are identical to the teachings embedded in canonical word and that one who transmits Chan must use the sutras and treatises as a standard. Japanese Rinzai Zen has, since the Edo period, marginalized the sutra-based Chan of the Chan Prolegomenon and its successor text, the Mind Mirror ( Zongjinglu) of Yongming Yanshou (904-976). This book contains the first in-depth treatment in English of the neglected Mind Mirror, positioning it as a restatement of Zongmi's work for a Song dynasty audience. The ideas and models of the Chan Prolegomenon, often disseminated in East Asia through the conduit of the Mind Mirror, were highly influential in the Chan traditions of Song and Ming China, Korea from the late Koryo onward, and Kamakura-Muromachi Japan. In addition, Tangut-language translations of Zongmi's Chan Prolegomenon and Chan Letter constitute the very basis of the Chan tradition of the state of Xixia. As Broughton shows, the sutra-based Chan of Zongmi and Yanshou was much more normative in the East Asian world than previously believed, and readers who seek a deeper, more complete understanding of the Chan tradition will experience a surprising reorientation in this book.
