Spanish False Friends and Other Traps: A Guide to Translating English Into/From Spanish

Spanish False Friends and Other Traps: A Guide to Translating English Into/From Spanish

What is a false friend? Though the English word "actual" is spelled the same as "actual" in Spanish, the two words mean very different things. (In Spanish it means "today, at present.") These false friends share the same etymology, but their historical development diverged, and today they are not synonymous. Numerous examples of such false cognates that deceive translators and perplex casual readers are provided in this glossary. The author presents paired homonyms and words with similar etymologies, providing definitions and examples of usage. Also included are expressions that might confuse a translator or someone not fully familiar with the language. Since the book includes contemporary false friends, it is the most up-to-date volume of its kind. The only book of its kind on the market, this will be THE reference book on Spanish-English false cognates. . Perfect for Spanish-English translators and advanced language students . Compiles tricky words in one place for easy reference Raúl Gáler has had a long and distinguished career at the United Nations, where he was Chief of the Interpretation Service. He has trained aspiring interpreters and works as a freelance interpreter for several international organizations.

Translating Beowulf: Modern Versions in English Verse

Translating Beowulf: Modern Versions in English Verse

Translations of the Old English poem Beowulf proliferate, and their number continues to grow. Focusing on the particularly rich period since 1950, this book presents a critical account of translations in English verse, setting them in the contexts both of the larger story of the recovery and reception of the poem and of perceptions of it over the past two hundred years, and of key issues in translation theory. Attention is also paid to prose translation and to the creative adaptations of the poem that have been produced in a variety of media, not least film. The author looks in particular at four translations of arguably the most literary and historical importance: those by Edwin Morgan (1952), Burton Raffel (1963), Michael Alexander (1973) and Seamus Heaney (1999). But, from an earlier period, he also gives a full account of William Morris's strange 1898 version.

A Readable Beowulf: The Old English Epic Newly Translated

A Readable Beowulf: The Old English Epic Newly Translated

Stanley B. Greenfield, one of the world’s foremost Anglo-Saxon scholars, writes of why, after more than thirty years of study, he undertook the Herculean task of rendering Beowulf into contemporary verse: “I wanted my translation to be not only faithful to the original but, as the late John Lennon would have put it, `A Poem in Its Own Write.’ I wanted it to `flow,’ to be easy to read, with the narrative movement of a modern prose story; yet to suggest the rhythmic cadences of the Old English poem. I wanted it both modern and Old English in its reflexes and sensibilities, delighting both the general reader and the Anglo-Saxon specialist. . . . I wanted it to reproduce the intoxication of aural contours which… might have pleased and amused warriors over their cups in the Anglo-Saxon mead-hall, or those monks in Anglo-Saxon monasteries who paid more attention to song and to stories of Ingeld than to the lector and the gospels.” Greenfield has succeeded to a remarkable degree in reaching his goals. An early reviewer of the manuscript, Daniel G. Calder of UCLA, wrote: “I find it the best translation of Beowulf. One of the great problems with other translations is that they make the reading of Beowulf difficult. Greenfield’s translation speeds along with considerable ease. . . Scholars will find the translation fascinating as an exercise in the successful recreating of various aspects of Old English poetic style.”

The Buzzword Dictionary: 1,000 Phrases Translated from Pompous to English (How America Speaks series)

Pompous jargon pervades English these days, from corporate speak to silly legalisms. This lighthearted look at how English is being mangled reveals the underlying meaning, as well as the attitudes behind the meaning, of more than 1,000 buzzwords. Readers will discover that "learning opportunity" is a nice way of saying "mistake;" a "lawn mullet" is a yard that's neatly trimmed out front but growing long in the back; and a "meanderthal" is someone who has a hard time getting to the point when telling a story. Accompanied by 15 illustrated cartoons, this comical look at language shows how combining words can give way to new meanings.

Rome and the Greek East to the Death of Augustus (Translated Documents of Greece and Rome)

Rome and the Greek East to the Death of Augustus (Translated Documents of Greece and Rome)

This is a collection in English translation of Greek and Latin sources for the study of Greek and Roman history, sources which are mainly inscriptions and papyri. They do not include the major authors such as Polybius and Livy. Where those authors have provided us with the broad outline of the Roman presence in the Greek world, this collection allows the student and reader to penetrate beneath what they have to tell us and to see details otherwise unreported. Much of this documentary material having never before been translated into English, it has been all too often neglected in colleges and universities at all levels. The theme of the present collection is the Roman presence in the Greek East, the nature of the Roman hegemony, the diplomatic moves on both sides, and the reaction of the Greeks, during the period from the last decades of the third century BC to the death of Augustus in AD 14. It includes such materials as treaties of alliance and friendship, honorary decrees, official letters of Roman governors, decrees of the Roman senate, dedications of statues, Roman laws, reports of embassies, religious cults, legal decisions, loyalty oaths to Rome, athletic contests, calendars, and minutes of an audience in Rome given by the emperor. Brief commentary and notes accompany the translations, making this book a collection to be welcomed by students and teachers of ancient history.

Translating the Bible: from William Tyndale to King James

Translating the Bible: from William Tyndale to King James

What motivated the men who gave us our Bible in English? Much of the answer lies in the turbulent religious history of the era, but there are clues which can be found in the prefaces published with each new edition. This collection of the prefaces to the main translations of the Bible into English between 1525 and 1611 has been prepared to coincide with the four-hundredth anniversary of the fi rst edition of the Authorised or King James Version. An introductory chapter delineates the key events, and this is followed by each of the texts, with notes indicating the sources of the various quotations and allusions. This collection therefore provides the historical and theological ancestry of a much loved translation, and readers can hardly fail to be challenged by the spiritual concerns of the translators. Gerald Bray is Director of Research for the Latimer Trust. Prior to this appointment he taught church history and historical theology at Beeson Divinity School, Samford University from 1993, having previously served as lecturer in theology and philosophy at Oak Hill College in London.

Dante: Inferno: Translated Into English With Notes And Commentary By Frank Salvidio

Dante: Inferno: Translated Into English With Notes And Commentary By Frank Salvidio

In the middle of the journey of our life, I came to myself again in a dark wood, where the right way was lost … So begins Frank Salvidio’s compelling translation of the great journey of Western Christian Civilization—the pilgrimage of Dante Alighieri from the exile of sin to the Promised Land of salvation—a journey whose beginning in fire and ice has made the expression “Dante’s Inferno” a commonplace in virtually every language of the modern world. As in his translation of the Vita Nuova, praised not only for its exceptional clarity and fidelity to the original, but also for its “thoughtfully-woven representation of the graceful straightforwardness of the linguaggio dantesco,” Salvidio has once again recreated Dante’s intense and riveting voice in the unadorned simplicity of American English. Additionally, the facing notes—succinct and scholarly—make this translation ideal for students of the poem.
