Hebrews [james W. Thompson] [english] [paper - James W. Thompson (paperback)

Hebrews [james W. Thompson] [english] [paper - James W. Thompson (paperback)

Hebrews, the second of eighteen volumes in the Paideia commentary series, brings the insight of a veteran teacher and writer to bear on a New Testament book whose rich imagery and memorable phrases have long shaped Christian discourse. The Paideia series approaches each text in its final, canonical form, proceeding by sense units rather than word-by-word or verse-by-verse. Each sense unit is explored in three sections: (1) introductory matters, (2) tracing the train of thought, (3) key hermeneutical and theological questions. The commentaries shed fresh light on the text while avoiding idiosyncratic readings, attend to theological meaning without presuming a specific theological stance in the reader, and show how the text uses narrative and rhetorical strategies from the ancient educational context to form and shape the reader.

The Word: The Dictionary That Reveals The Hebrew Source of English

The Word: The Dictionary That Reveals The Hebrew Source of English

This landmark dictionary proves that English words can be traced back to the universal, original language, Biblical Hebrew. "Genesis II" supports a 'Mother Tongue' thesis, and the Bible also claims that Adam named the animals. This may seem difficult to accept, but then why do the translations of the following animals' names: Skunk, Gopher, Giraffe and Horse actually have corresponding meanings in Biblical Hebrew, such as: Stinker, Digger, Neck and Plower! The book features overwhelming data suggesting that the roots of all human words are universal, and that words have related synonyms and antonyms that must have been intelligently designed (perhaps by the designer of life himself!) The current hypothesis that language evolved from grunting ape-men may seem like the flat earth theory after reading this book. The 22,000 English-Hebrew links provide surprising evidence, and open new worlds of understanding, once we consider that all of these similar words could not be coincidences.

A Greek-Hebrew/Aramaic Two-way Index to the Septuagint

A Greek-Hebrew/Aramaic Two-way Index to the Septuagint

Part I of this two-way index for the Septuagint shows which Hebrew/Aramaic word or words corresponds or correspond to a given Greek word in the Septuagint and how many times such an equation applies. This information was provided to a certain extent in the author's two earlier editions of the Greek-English Lexicon of the Septuagint (Leuven: Peeters, 1993, 2002). In its latest edition covering now the entire Septuagint, A Greek-English Lexicon of the Septuagint (Leuven: Peeters, 2009), this information has been totally deleted, and is presented here in its entirety. Part II enables scholars to see at a glance what Greek words were used by the Septuagint translators to translate the Hebrew and Aramaic words occurring in the Old Testament. This is an entirely revised version of the author's Hebrew/Aramaic Index to the Septuagint Keyed to the Hatch-Redpath Concordance (Grand Rapids, Michigan: Baker Books, 1998), now out of print. This replaced a Hebrew Index printed as an appendix to the Hatch-Redpath Concordance, which only gave page references of the Concordance for each Hebrew/Aramaic word. In order to find actual Greek words used to translate a given Hebrew/Aramaic word one had to leaf through the concordance itself. This is not a mere reprint of the 1998 Index. Both parts of this Index are based on an extensive, critical review of the data as presented in the Hatch-Redpath concordance. Moreover, it incorporates data totally left out of account by Hatch-Redpath such as the apocryphal book of 1Esdras and includes Dead Sea biblical manuscripts, not only manuscripts of the canonical books, but also an apocryphal book such as the Aramaic fragments of Tobit. Furthermore, the Index, just as the author's Lexicon, took into account data found in the alternative versions of books such as Daniel, Esther and Tobit, and the so-called Antiochene or Proto-Lucianic version of the books such as Judges, Samuel, Kings, and Chronicles. The Index will be a valuable instrument for not only Septuagint specialists, but also scholars interested in Greek, Hebrew, Aramaic philology, the textual criticism of the Old Testament, and New Testament scholars. This is an essential companion volume for users of Hatch-Redpath's Concordance and the author's Septuagint Lexicon.

In the Beginning: A Short History of the Hebrew Language (English and Hebrew Edition)

In the Beginning: A Short History of the Hebrew Language (English and Hebrew Edition)

Hebrew as a language is just over 3,000 years old, and the story of its alphabet is unique among the languages of the world. Hebrew set the stage for almost every modern alphabet, and was arguably the first written language simple enough for everyone, not just scribes, to learn, making it possible to make a written record available to the masses for the first time. Written language has existed for so many years—since around 3500 BCE—that most of us take it for granted. But as Hoffman reveals in this entertaining and informative work, even the idea that speech can be divided into units called “words” and that these words can be represented with marks on a page, had to be discovered. As Hoffman points out, almost every modern system of writing descends from Hebrew; by studying the history of this language, we can learn a good deal about how we express ourselves today.Hoffman follows and decodes the adventure that is the history of Hebrew, illuminating how the written record has survived, the significance of the Dead Sea Scrolls and ancient translations, and attempts to determine how the language actually sounded. He places these developments into a historical context, and shows their continuing impact on the modern world. This sweeping history traces Hebrew's development as one of the first languages to make use of vowels. Hoffman also covers the dramatic story of the rebirth of Hebrew as a modern, spoken language.Packed with lively information about language and linguistics and history, In the Beginning is essential reading for both newcomers and scholars interested in learning more about Hebrew and languages in general.

The Comprehensive Dictionary of English & Hebrew First Names

The Comprehensive Dictionary of English & Hebrew First Names

Since the publication of his These Are the Names, Rabbi Alfred J. Kolatch, has been recognized as the world’s leading authority on English and Hebrew names and their meanings. That pioneering work paved the way for the author’s other distinguished books on nomenclature, including The Name Dictionary and Best Baby Names for Jewish Children. Now, in this most comprehensive work ever prepared on the subject, Rabbi Kolatch expands on his previous efforts by introducing many hundreds of new Hebrew names that have become popular in both Israel and the diaspora. He thereby provides an indispensable resource for parents seeking a name for their newborns, for sociologists analyzing societal trends, and for scholars tracing the evolution of language. The Comprehensive Dictionary of English & Hebrew First Names begins with an introduction that explains the origins of names and the Jewish naming process. It discusses the Bible as a source of names, names with positive attributes, celebrity names, masculine/feminine interchanges, and more. Wide-ranging in scope, the dictionary also explains the ceremonies traditionally followed for naming a boy and a girl and explores Jewish custom as it relates to naming children after relatives, naming an adopted child, and naming a convert. The entries in this book are presented alphabetically. Immediately following each entry, where applicable, the Hebrew spelling is provided in vocalized Hebrew script. The language(s) from which the name derives as well as its literal meaning are then indicated. Finally, Hebrew equivalents are offered in transliterated English. Those seeking to name a child based on meaning will find the exhaustive Index of Names by Meaning an invaluable tool.

Interlinear Hebrew-Greek-English Bible with Strong's Numbers, Volume 1 of 3 Volumes (The Interlinear Hebrew-Greek-English Bible)

Interlinear Hebrew-Greek-English Bible with Strong's Numbers, Volume 1 of 3 Volumes (The Interlinear Hebrew-Greek-English Bible)

The only complete interlinear Bible available in English-and it's keyed to Strong's Exhaustive Concordance! Thousands of pastors, students, and laypeople have found The Interlinear Bible to be a time-saving tool for researching the subtle nuances and layers of meaning within the original biblical languages. Featuring the complete Hebrew and Greek texts with a direct English rendering below each word, it also includes The Literal Translation of the Bible in the outside column. But what truly sets this resource apart are the Strong's numbers printed directly above the Hebrew and Greek words. Strong's numbers enable even those with no prior knowledge of Greek or Hebrew to easily access a wealth of language reference works keyed to Strong's-Greek/Hebrew dictionaries, analytical lexicons, concordances, word studies, and more. The Hebrew is based on the Masoretic Text and the Greek is from the Textus Receptus. The sources of the texts are documented in the preface, and are essentially the same (with some minor variations) to the Hebrew and Greek texts used by the KJV translators. Only a small minority of Bible students ever achieve the ability to read the original biblical languages. This resource offers a non-threatening tool for those lacking language training to begin exploring the languages of Scripture. • Conveniently includes the entire Hebrew and Greek text of the Bible in one place • Offering a concise, literal translation of each Greek and Hebrew word, it's a great jumping off point for in-depth Bible study and text analysis. This Bible displays all the Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek words of the Bible in the Masoretic Hebrew Text and the Received Greek Text, with literal, accurate English meanings placed directly under each original word in interlinear form, with Strong's Concordance numbers over each original word, enabling the Bible student (whether knowing the original languages or not) to refer to all lexicons and concordances that have also been coded with Strong's numbers. 2,936 pages, bound in a bonded leather over boards hardback edition. This new edition has been much improved by a new typesetting of the New Testament (Volume IV), with larger print, the left marginal column containing a newly revised Literal Translation of the Bible (2000), and a right marginal column containing the Authorized/King James Version (1769). The three volume Old Testament is an exact reprint of the 1985 Hendrickson Publishers Edition. The Old Testament does not yet have the 1769 King James Version. The only complete Interlinear Bible is now fully keyed to Strong's Concordance numbers. The Strong's numbering above each Hebrew and Greek word - along with the Interlinear text and marginal literal English Translation and the 1769 Authorized King James Version - opens a treasure house of Bible study possibilities for those who wish to understand the Scripture better. It's use will allow the novice student to read the original text without losing valuable time to look up the meaning of the Hebrew & Greek words in the Hebrew & Greek lexicons. There is no substitute for a first hand knowledge of the original text. However since only a small minority of Bible students retain an easy reading comprehension of the original text, the Interlinear Bible is a welcome aid to Bible students, laymen, and pastors who wish to continue working with the original languages.
