The Brush and the Sword:Kasa--Korean Classical Poems in Prose, Parallel Texts in Korean and English

The Brush and the Sword:Kasa--Korean Classical Poems in Prose, Parallel Texts in Korean and English

Here is an anthology of Korean classical poems in the vernacular, hitherto unknown to the poetry-lovers the world over not only the Western hemisphere, but all those whose native tongue is not Korean. Translated into English verse, the lines evolve, while sustaining the verbal echo of the rhythmical beat inherent in the original, thus attaining complete fusion of the two versions of a literary work the original in Korean and its English rendition. While the readers of poetry may have found a thrilling charm in haiku, a Japanese poetic form, on account of its verbal economy and the pleasure of catching its poetic message condensed in a few words, Kasa, a uniquely Korean tradition of poetic composition, allows the readers to breathe with the full capacity of their lungs: the sweeping lines, unhampered by petty poetic conceits, carry the auditors' mind and heart all the way till they stop with the last stroke of its composer's brush. Here is what one may call Korean counterpart of English blank verse. "Prof. Sung-Il Lee has attempted to bring this kasa, a poetic form of 16th- and 17th-century Korea, to the English-speaking public following a rigorous discipline. He insists that the rhythm of the original be felt in the translation, and he has made the verses in the translation reflect the original, line by line. As the translations are published with the original texts, students of Korean literature will find this work of immense benefit. And as it reveals even more the glory of the Korean literary tradition, it should be appauded for its appearance, and for its contribution to the enhancement of world understanding." --Kyung-Nyun Kim Richards, Translator of Yung Humyong's The Love of Dunhuang, Winner of The 39th Best Translation Award (Korean PEN Centre, Internation P.E.N., 2006) "From the ever-alert CCC, a brave and astonishingly successful attempt to represent this distinguished but remote ancient poetic tradition in English, together with an illuminating introduction and the source texts for scholars and serious students of the language and culture. Highly recommended for all wishing to extend their literary horizons." --Daniel Weissbort, Founding Editor of Modern Poetry in Translation, 1965-2003, Director of the MFA Program in Translation, University of Iowas, 1985-2000 "The essential aim of teaching is to dispel ignorance and thus promote a new creative sensibility. This anthology has done a masterful job at this. Sung-Il Lee lays before us samples of the great classical form of Korean poetry called Kasa, so sadly unknown to Western readers along with any coherent knowledge of the country's past and its culture. He gives us too a careful and yet properly poetic version in the appropriate English. Although we cannot hear the sounds of the original facing text, we can contemplate the hieroglyphic beauty (to us) of the Korean ideograms. Just as our own great poets managed to transfer Latin verse into good and appropriate English poetry, so has Sung-Il Lee done here with these Korean forms. The collection is enhanced by a thoroughgoing set of notes and explanations. One will be so much better off for having read this books." --Gregory Rabassa, Translator of Nobel Prize Winners, Miguel Angel Asturias and Babriel Garcia Marquez, Winner of a National Book Award, the PEN Translation Award, the National Medal of Arts

Toy City

Toy City

PLEASE NOTE: This edition of Toy City is the only English translation containing the full text of the Korean novel, including all three segments. Another paperback edition, also called Toy City, is much shorter, containing only one third of the full novel. Toy City, a poignant coming-of-age story of a fourth-grade boy named Yun, depicts the life of a poor family struggling to survive in the years immediately after the Korean War. An autobiographical work, the novel is written entirely from young Yun's point of view. While the political ramifications of the Korean War are suggested throughout, they do not take center stage in this tale of a boy forced to grow up quickly to support his family. Yun copes with tremendous losses, but manages to find joy in everyday occurrences. Lyrical, passionate depictions of hunger, shame, and frustration are interspersed throughout the descriptions of children's games, Yun's budding sexuality, and the kind acts of neighbors, illuminating the conditions under which poor Koreans lived after the War. Vacillating between bitterly ignoring his family and remaining close to them, Yun struggles to come to terms with the sudden realization that he cannot depend on his mother, father, and older sister for anything. Stunningly capturing the wishes, hopes, and anger of a young boy, Toy City is a graceful study of the vulnerable toughness of a child thrust into a chaotic early adulthood. Alternately heart-wrenching and hopeful, this masterpiece is a must for those interested in the impact of war on everyday life and the underclass of 1950s Korean society.

Korean Tea Classics

Korean Tea Classics

Three ancient texts expressing the essence of the Korean Way of Tea are here translated into English for the first time. The oldest, ChaBu Rhapsody to Tea, by Hanjae Yi Mok (1471-1498), is a sophisticated and delicate celebration of tea. The author was a scholar of considerable attainments who died far too early. The 19th century saw a tea revival among Korean literati. Its main guide was the Venerable Cho ui (1786-1866). The first of his tea texts, ChaSinJeon Chronicle of the Spirit of Tea, he copied from a Ming Chinese work to serve as a practical guide to tea. The great poem, DongChaSong Hymn in Praise of Korean Tea, for which Cho ui is chiefly celebrated, is a set of formal poetic stanzas celebrating tea with notes by the author to elucidate the references. This volume offers an English translation of these three remarkable works, with explanatory notes and biographies of the two great masters of Korean tea. It gives readers who are unfamiliar with Classical Chinese access to the essential texts of the Korean Way of Tea.

The Jehol Diary

The Jehol Diary

This is the first translation into English of the eighteenth-century Korean masterpiece entitled "Yorha ilgi" ("The Jehol Diary") by Pak Chiwon (1737-1805). The original text was written in classical Chinese and is a notoriously difficult work to translate. Pak Chiwon diarizes the experiences of his remarkable overland journey on horseback from the northern border region of Korea to China's imperial summer residence in Jehol. Having been commanded by King Chongjo, the Korean monarch, to undertake the journey, Pak accompanied the royal envoys in 1780 on their tributary visit to the Chinese Emperor Qianlong, who was celebrating his seventieth birthday. The diary reveals the author's considerable curiosity about everything he sees and experiences: he describes aspects of China's superior material culture, and compares what he sees to be the backwardness of Korean methodology and uneconomic ways. In addition, the diary provides an outline of his suggestions for Korean social reform and even painstakingly records the daily lives of his fellow travellers, including his two personal servants. The text consists of three chapters: Crossing the Yalu River; Tales from Shenjing; and, Gateways and Garrisons.

Webster's Korean to English Crossword Puzzles: Level 1 (Korean Edition)

Webster's Korean to English Crossword Puzzles: Level 1 (Korean Edition)

Even if you do not like crossword puzzles, you may end up loving these. Designed for mother-tongue or completely fluent speakers of Korean wanting to improve their English skills, the puzzles may also be entertaining to English speakers. They are formatted so that each puzzle can be solved in 15 to 30 minutes. The vocabulary gradually becomes harder across puzzles thus increasing the challenge as you progress. Each book has 100 puzzles and each puzzle covers some 30 word pairs (equaling 3000 challenges!). These are truly pleasant, if not addictive, crossword puzzles for language learning. Learning a language is always difficult. To ease the pain, hints are provided in small script at the bottom of each page, though these are selected to prevent an engineered solution to the puzzle. Full solutions are provided in the back of the book. These two features (hints and verifiable solutions), force the reader to decipher a word’s meaning and serves to improve vocabulary retention and understanding. One recent reviewer of this series noted “As a Peace Corps Volunteer … this is definitely a fun way to keep up the language skills … The series has a whole bunch of "rarely spoken" languages, widely unknown to us in the Western world.” Another reviewer notes: “Good teacher as it has words listed below that are in puzzle so the clues are there if you need them.” Public domain translations for Korean contributed to Webster’s Online Dictionary used in these puzzles may have originated from uncited volunteers, native speakers, professional translators, field linguists and academics (not by the editor of the puzzles). If you would like citation for any translations, make suggestions, note errors, or contribute in any other way, please email Philip M. Parker at INSEAD, who will update this series from time to time.
