Lagabbia (ETHICS IN DESIGN) (English and Italian Edition)

Lagabbia (ETHICS IN DESIGN) (English and Italian Edition)

The topic of ethics is today, more than ever, at the centre of daily debate; in particular, the dichotomy between freedom of the individual citizen and the authoritarian imposition of the state is becoming increasingly clear. Since human beings began to live together in groups, the legitimacy of moral behaviour has become necessary for the survival of every community. In light of these considerations, the Assessorato Moda created the fashion brand Lagabbia, in collaboration with the Florentine prison of Sollicciano and major companies of the Florentine territory. Wearable and other types of products were made, expressing both the territory's excellent manufacturing capabilities and the intangible values carried by their products. Saper fare (knowing how to make things) is not only of economic and market value, but it is reconsidered and reinterpreted in a contemporary view, becoming the vector for ethical and social values. Therefore, it is important to ask ourselves what ethics means in the design process and in the creation of product. If we know that an intelligent product or system will have social influence, we need a criterion to determine what a desirable influence is. Ethics gives such a criterion. This criterion goes beyond functionality. If you plan an ethical approach in the design process, the resulting product will be an ethical product or a product whose use causes ethical behaviour and ethical business interactions. The project and the Lagabbia products show how these theoretical concepts can become a reality and strengthen the image of the territory, its strong manufacturing tradition and its humanity. Sea Devils: Italian Naval Commandos in World War II (Classics of Naval Literature)

Sea Devils: Italian Naval Commandos in World War II (Classics of Naval Literature)

Though little known to the English-speaking world, the elite World War II Italian naval unit Decima Flottiglia MAS is considered by many to be the first modern naval commando squad. Assembled by Prince Junio Valerio Borghese at the beginning of the war, these frogmen were trained to fight undercover and underwater with small submarines and assault boats armed with a variety of torpedoes--pioneering tactics that remain a standard for Special Forces around the world today. The commandos story is told by the man who trained and led them in their desperate exploits. Borghese blends his own account with details offered by his men to present valuable insights into one of the Italian s fiercest and most formidable fighting units. First published in Italy in 1954 and later translated into English, this memoir was part of the Naval Institute Press Classics of Naval Literature series in 1995 and is now back in print as a paperback.

Edward II (The English Monarchs Series)

Edward II (The English Monarchs Series)

Edward II (1284–1327), King of England, Lord of Ireland, and Duke of Aquitaine, was the object of ignominy during his lifetime and calumny since it. Conventionally viewed as worthless, incapable of sustained policy, and significant only for his sporadic displays of ill-directed energy or a stubborn adherence to greedy and ambitious favorites, he has been presented as fit only to be deposed and replaced by someone more worthy of the throne. This definitive biography, the fruit of a lifetime’s study, does not present Edward II as a heroic or successful king: his deposition after a turbulent reign of nearly twenty years is proof enough that it went terribly wrong. But Seymour Phillips’ scrutiny of the multitude of available sources shows that a richer picture emerges, in line with the complexity of events and of the man himself. If Edward II was not a successful king, he was not fundamentally different in many ways from most English monarchs. The biography strikes a deft balance, taking full account of the problems the king faced in England, Scotland, and Ireland and in his relations with France. It also tackles the contentious issue of whether Edward II did not die in 1327, murdered under barbaric circumstances, but lived on as a captive in England and then a wanderer on the Continent. Eight hundred years on, a king’s life is properly examined.

From Caesar to the Mafia: Persons, Places and Problems in Italian Life

From Caesar to the Mafia: Persons, Places and Problems in Italian Life

Described by Melvin Lasky as "one of the great journalists of our time," Luigi Barzini was also one of the great cultural historians of modern Italy. From Caesar to the Mafia brings together his finest essays, roughly half of them never before published in the English language. Whether discussing the deep Italian roots of Julius Caesar, Casanova's contribution to the art of living big, or Camillo Cavour's contribution to a democratic as well as integrated nation, Barzini makes Italian culture come alive. Whether he is dealing with heroes or villains, he never loses sight of how Italy became a distinct nation. From Caesar to the Mafia is not only about people, but also focuses on places and problems. When Barzini discusses the Sicilians, the Isle of Capri, or his birthplace of Milan, he has the distinct capacity to capture what is universal as well as what is intimate in each place. An innate sense of psychological profiling enriches these intimate sketches. Because Barzini had such a keen appreciation of Anglo-American culture he emphasizes people and places known to travelers to Italy, as well as readers of Italian literature. What makes the volume so special is Barzini's careful maneuvering between sentimentality on one side and brutality on the other. Italy is not only a state of mind for Barzini, but also a political culture. By discussing the exaggerated mannerism of Mussolini or the unusual capacity of Gramsci to grasp the principles of revolution making in an underdeveloped country, he helps us better understand the operations of fascism and communism as system and ideology. The final essays give voice to Barzini's ability as a political analyst. His examination of the Italian Communist Party's multiple personality disorders, the Christian Democrats as working compromise, the Mafia as a system of power designed not so much to kill as to intimidate and to rule in the absence of popular resistance, tells the reader about modern, postwar Italy. This is a volume not just to be read, but to be savored. Luigi Barzini (1908-1984) was the author of an incomparable set of books on the United States, Europe, and Italy, including Americans are Alone in the World, and The Italians. He served as a foreign correspondent for Corriere della Sera, and later as a liberal deputy in the Italian Parliament. He was described by the late Cyril Connolly as "a philosopher and master of the English language." Michael Ledeen is a distinguished senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, and himself a learned scholar in Italian politics and letters. He has written widely on Machiavelli, D'Annunzio, and Italian fascism.

Metamorfosi / Metamorphosis (English and Italian Edition)

English summary: The diffusion of consumer technology and the transformation that took place in the world of everyday objects has radically altered our relationship with the objects themselves and made them indispensable to the life of every individual. This publication aims to analyze the Italian fashion system as an example of an industry that applies its saper fare (know-how) to the latest technology. In order for the product designed and made in Italy to be adjusted to the new dynamics of competitiveness, the contributors to this volume propose a survey in which technology is an integral part of implementation and support of the product, at the service of saper fare, which results in a humanized technology. Hunger (English and Italian Edition)

Hunger (English and Italian Edition)

In this collection of photojournalism from Bennetton's groundbreaking Colors magazine, stories of very human suffering are told through the hardhitting images of James Mollison, one of the great masters of documentary photography. In 2002 Mollison and journalist Amy Flanagan traveled to Afghanistan, Cambodia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea to visit projects supported by the United Nations World Food Program. Hunger is what they saw: intense images that represent the 800 million poor people around the world who live with hunger every day.The people in Hunger are the forgotten ones. Their plight may not be dramatic enough to make the news, but this doesn't mean that their lives are not in danger, that they don't exist. The UNWFP welcomes the publication of Hunger as part of its ongoing work to highlight the situation of the world's hungry. A percentage of the proceeds from this book will be donated to the UNWFP.

Viva l'Italia! (English and Italian Edition)

Viva l'Italia! (English and Italian Edition)

For years, Ron Galella, "the godfather of U.S. paparazzi culture," has provided the world a glimpse into the off-limits world of celebrity. With Viva l'Italia!, a deeper and more probing Galella emerges. He sets out to find his own Italian roots, and in so doing, takes us on a viaggio as he combs his vast archive for images of Italian and Italian-American actors, artists, and fashion designers, along with a wide range of other cultural icons. Galella's tour begins in Rome's famed Cinecittà where Federico Fellini relaxes between takes on a film set. It was Fellini who proclaimed, "paparazzi are bandits of images," coining the word with his character Señor Paparazzo in La Dolce Vita. As he continues on, Galella presents us with rare portraits of Italy's most famous sons and daughters, including Isabella Rossellini, Silvana Mangano, Marlon Brando, Monica Bellucci, Carla Bruni, and Sophia Loren. Never one to shy away from bad boys, he even includes the "Dapper Don," John Gotti, emerging from federal court in Manhattan. The appeal and power of Galella's beautiful photography is complimented by extemporaneous quotes he has amassed over a half-century of travel and celebrity encounters. "You look Italian," quipped Anna Magnani as Ron captured her in Rome, during the filming of The Secret of Santa Vittoria, with Virna Lisi and Anthony Quinn. Some crossed the ocean, some changed their names, some were born in disparate locations as with Dean Martin of Steubenville, Ohio, and Frank Sinatra of Hoboken, New Jersey; but they all brought with them passion born of Italy--love of cinema, music, art, and fashion--as Galella triumphantly proclaims with Viva l'Italia!

James II (The English Monarchs Series)

James II (The English Monarchs Series)

James II (1633-1701) lacked the charisma of his father, Charles I, but shared his tendency to dismiss the views of others when they differed from his own. Failing to understand his subjects, James was also misunderstood by them. In this highly-regarded biography, John Miller reassesses James II and his reign, drawing on a wide array of primary sources from France, Italy, and Ireland as well as England. Miller argues that the king had many laudable attributes -- he was brave, loyal, honorable, and hard-working, and he was at least as benevolent toward his people as his father had been. Yet James's conversion to Catholicism fueled the distrust of his Protestant subjects who placed the worst possible construction on his actions and statements. Although James came to see the securing of religious freedom for Catholics in the wider context of freedom for all religious minorities, his people naturally doubted the sincerity of his commitment to toleration. The book explores James's relations with the state and society, focusing on the political, diplomatic, and religious issues that shaped his reign. Miller discusses the human failings, the gulf of understanding between the king and his subjects, and the sheer bad luck that led to James's downfall. He also considers the reasons for James's lack of interest in recovering his kingdom after his flight to France in 1688. This revised edition of the book includes a substantial new foreword assessing recent work on the reign.
