The Tragedy of Man: Dramatic Poem (Classic Reprint)

The Tragedy of Man: Dramatic Poem (Classic Reprint)

In order fully to comprehend the tremendous difficulties attending the translation into English of a work like the present, it Is necessary to understand that a hroad gulf separates the Hungarian-Magyar -language from the English and all other European languages. Not even of Aryan origin, its construction can not be explained according to the principles of Aryan languages and its conciseness and strength cannot be transferred. This is not an apology, it is the statement of a fact.To produce, even approximately, the sense of an expression, it is frequently necessary to render one Hungarian word into five or six of any other European language; hence the gigantic difficulty of translating a masterpiece of Hungarian literature into any Aryan language must of necessity be greater than that of translation from a kindred idiom. In the Magyar, the most perfect of all the Turanian languages, there has been produced a great literature, much of which is practically unknown outside of Hungary.About the Publisher Forgotten Books is a publisher of historical writings, such as: Philosophy, Classics, Science, Religion, History, Folklore and Mythology.Forgotten Books' Classic Reprint Series utilizes the latest technology to regenerate facsimiles of historically important writings. The Contribution of Reference and Co-reference to Cohesion - in English-Spanish and English-Hungarian translations

The Contribution of Reference and Co-reference to Cohesion - in English-Spanish and English-Hungarian translations

The empirical research presented in this book is based on the hypotheses that it is possible to compare texts across languages on the basis of the cohesive devices used in them (Halliday & Hasan, 1976), and that translation causes shifts in the ways of referring in texts (e.g., Baker, 1992; Blum-Kulka, 1986) due to differences in the grammatical systems of the source and target languages. The first part of the book introduces the theoretical background of the study: cohesion analysis and translation strategies. In the second part, using Halliday and Hasan's (1976) taxonomy for the analysis of cohesion, this study compares the translation strategies (Klaudy, 1994) that translators use in transferring referential cohesion (pronominal reference, demonstratives and comparatives) from an English literary text to its Spanish and Hungarian translations. The book intends to contribute to research in written discourse analysis and translation studies. It may be useful for translators, researchers in the field of applied linguistics, as well as teachers and students of translation, or anyone else who is interested in the discourse-level characteristics of texts.
