The Collected Songs of Cold Mountain (Mandarin Chinese and English Edition)

The Collected Songs of Cold Mountain (Mandarin Chinese and English Edition)

This authoritative, bilingual edition represents the first time the entirety of Cold Mountain's poetry has been translated into English. These translations were originally published by Copper Canyon Press nearly twenty years ago. Now, significantly revised and expanded, the collection also includes a new preface by the translator, Red Pine, whose accompanying notes are at once scholarly, accessible, and entertaining. Also included for the first time are poems by two of Cold Mountain's colleagues.Legendary for his clarity, directness, and lack of pretension, the eight-century hermit-poet Cold Mountain (Han Shan) is a major figure in the history of Chinese literature and has been a profound influence on writers and readers worldwide. Writers such as Charles Frazier and Gary Snyder studied his poetry, and Jack Kerouac's Dharma Bums is dedicated "to Han Shan." 1.Bstoried cliffs were the fortune I castbird trails beyond human trackswhat surrounds my yardwhite clouds nesting dark rocksI've lived here quite a few yearsand always seen the spring-water changetell those people with tripods and bellsempty names are no damn good 71.someone sits in a mountain gorgecloud robe sunset tasselshandful of fragrances he'd sharethe road is long and hardregretful and doubtfulold and unaccomplishedthe crowd calls him crippledhe stands alone steadfast 205.my place is on Cold Mountainperched on a cliff beyond the circuit of afflictionimages leave no trace when they vanishI roam the whole galaxy from herelights and shadows flash across my mindnot one dharma comes before mesince I found the magic pearlI can go anywhere everywhere it's perfect Cold MountainA mountain man lives under thatchbefore his gate carts and horses are rarethe forest is quiet but partial to birdsthe streams are wide and home to fishwith his son he picks wild fruitwith his wife he hoes between rockswhat does he have at homea shelf full of nothing but books

Lost and Found Region 0 HK Import 110 Minutes Cantonese & Mandarin Audio W/Chinese & English Subs.

Lost and Found Region 0 HK Import 110 Minutes Cantonese & Mandarin Audio W/Chinese & English Subs.

A life-affirming and genuinely heart-warming drama, Lost and Found has the kind of storyline that one hesitates to relate to friends for fear they will dismiss the movie out of turn, particularly as it sounds like an imitation of C'est La Vie, Mon Cheri. It is definitely more than that and ranks among the United Filmmakers Organization's best productions to date. 23 year-old woman Chai Lam has been diagnosed with leukaemia and is given only a 30% chance of recovery. One day she sees a man fishing a wallet out of a garbage can. He turns out to be a Mongolia-born "lost and found" expert whose name translates into Cantonese as "That Worm." A gregarious sort, Worm (who knows nothing about Lam's condition) tackles the woman's request that he find Eurasian sailor Ted, whom she last saw four days ago. She has become interested in Ted and his home, the Scottish island of St. Kilda, which consists mostly of graveyards. When her rather cold and distant father refuses to allow her to continue working, Lam throws away her medication and decides that she would like to visit the island, which is known as "The Edge of the World." She and Worm are eventually able to track Ted down just as he is about to fly back home and take over running the family inn. Before she accepts Ted's invitation to visit him on St. Kilda, Lam helps Worm to try and grant the wish of a young girl, whose mother is in the hospital and on the verge of death. Lam's terminal illness can be interpreted as a metaphor for the countdown to the July 1, 1997 reunification, with all of the uncertainty that date posed for HK's citizens, and Lost and Found is primarily about life, love, and identity. Depending on how receptive you have been to everything preceding it, the final sequence just might reduce you to tears, but it is a good cry in both senses of the term.

Classical Chinese: A Basic Reader in Three Volumes (Princeton Language Program: Modern Chinese)

Classical Chinese: A Basic Reader in Three Volumes (Princeton Language Program: Modern Chinese)

Classical Chinese: A Basic Reader is the most comprehensive and authoritative textbook on the language, literature, philosophy, history, and religion of premodern China. Rigorously and extensively field-tested and fine-tuned for years in classroom settings by three members of the Chinese Linguistics Project at Princeton University, it sets a new standard for the field. Volume 1 contains 40 selections from texts written between the fifth century B.C. and the first century A.D., during which the classical Chinese language was fully developed and standardized. These passages, which express key themes in Chinese humor, wit, wisdom, moral conviction, and political ideals, are arranged in the order of complexity of the grammatical patterns they exemplify. Uniquely, each text is translated into both modern Chinese and English. Volume 2 contains a detailed glossary of unfamiliar terms and names found in Volume 1, and Volume 3 features detailed grammatical analyses, in which every sentence in the main texts is fully diagrammed to show the grammatical relations between their various parts. Four supplementary volumes--an introduction to grammar, readings in poetry and prose, selected historical texts, and selected philosophical texts--will also be available for use in conjunction with the main, three-volume set. There are corresponding exercises for all the reading texts in the Basic Reader and in the supplementary volumes to review and reinforce classroom learning. With Classical Chinese: A Basic Reader, Naiying Yuan, Haitao Tang, and James Geiss provide the definitive new resource for students and instructors of classical Chinese language or culture, one whose impact will be lasting.

The Butterfly as Companion: Meditations on the First Three Chapters of the Chuang Tzu (SUNY series in Religion and Philosophy) (English and Mandarin Chinese Edition)

The Butterfly as Companion: Meditations on the First Three Chapters of the Chuang Tzu (SUNY series in Religion and Philosophy) (English and Mandarin Chinese Edition)

Chuang Tzu's first three chapters are arranged into free verse (in Chinese, in the original word order) and translated, nearly word-for-word, with extensive critical glosses vis-a-vis over fifty Chinese, Japanese, and Western commentators. The exegetical, philosophical, and contemporary implications of these chapters are then meditated upon. Here, in Chuang Tzu's world, all strivings are a play, parodying stories and arguments; each plays off of and refers to the others. Chuang Tzu lived during the third and fourth centuries B.C. Historically, he is the foremost spokesman for Taoism and its legendary founder, Lao Tzu. It was mainly due to the influence of Chuang Tzu that Indian Buddhism was transformed in China into Ch'an into the unique vehicle we usually call by its Japanese name, Zen. This is the most thorough presentation to date of the Chuang Tzu's poetic beauty, philosophical insights, and unity.

A Blossom Like No Other Li Qingzhao

A Blossom Like No Other Li Qingzhao

Li Qingzhao (~ 1084 – 1156 CE) of the Song dynasty is indisputably the most brilliant woman writer in Chinese history. This biography offers an insightful interpretation of her character and a new translation of some of her writings. Wei Djao’s English rendition consistently captures the poet’s elegance, refreshing originality and creativity. Li Qingzhao lived in a turbulent period in Chinese history when half of China was lost to conquerors and two emperors were taken into captivity never to return to China. In this well-researched and eminently readable narrative, the events of her life are set against the backdrop of political and socio-cultural developments in the Song Dynasty. Li Qingzhao in her extant poems expresses many different moods and feelings about personal relationships that still resonate poignantly with the readers today. In her more political works she mocks the emperor and high officials of her day for their cowardice in the face of attack and occupation of northern China by invaders. Her versatility is also shown in a trilogy about a gambling game known as dama (Whipping Horse). In one of her poems, Li Qingzhao sings praise of the small but exquisite plum blossom that buds forth in deep winter, symbolizing the human qualities of integrity and endurance. It is a blossom like no other. It very aptly describes her own life. “So much research into Chinese history, yet the book makes such pleasant reading because of the strong point it makes about the character of an unusual woman. As a native Chinese speaker/reader, I have had great joy in savouring the beautiful verses in Chinese and then admiring the flowing translation in English.” – Dora Choi Po-king, Chinese University of Hong Kong “The author provides a prodigious amount of information about Li Qingzhao, and the socio-political background of Song China. Undoubtedly, A Blossom Like No Other, written in an easy and fluent style, sets a new standard for scholarly works in this genre.” – Allen Wittenborn, San Diego State University “The clear writing style makes the indomitable Li Qingzhao and her exquisite poetry accessible to lay people and Chinese literature experts alike. The last chapter presented in the name of Li Qingzhao is the most creative in every conceivable way.” – Helen Wu, University of Toronto “With profound imagination and learning in literature, history, and philosophy of both China and the West, Wei Djao has achieved something quite monumental: conveying Li Qingzhao’s unsurpassed literary achievement as palpably human and distinctly memorable for the English speaking readers.” – Howard Xie, North Seattle Community College “Wei Djao has succeeded in transcending the language barriers by meticulously translating Li Qingzhao’s songs into equally beautiful English with poetic rhythm.” – Liqun Cao, University of Ontario Institute of Technology

Yingelishi: Sinophonic English Poetry and Poetics

Yingelishi: Sinophonic English Poetry and Poetics

Poetry. Asian & Asian American Studies. Music. The nearly supernatural nature of this groundbreaking work can be glimpsed in the book's title: YÍNG LÌSHI (Chanted Songs, Beautiful Poetry): SINOPHONIC ENGLISH POETRY AND POETICS. When read aloud, YÍNG LÌSHI (pronounced yeen guh lee shr) sounds like an accented pronunciation of the word "English," while the Chinese reader sees the Chinese characters for "chanted songs, beautiful poetry." Stalling coined this term (and "Sinophonic English") to give a positive name to an increasingly widespread variation of English created by combining the two dominant languages of globalization (Mandarin Chinese and English). With over 350 million English speakers in China (more than there are Americans alive) many of whom speak English by recombining existing Chinese sounds into English words and sentences, this new hybrid language is already overwhelmingly present, yet its aesthetic potential has not yet been explored. Stalling's book complicates any easy dismissal of so-called Chinglish by creating a genuinely uncanny poetry written entirely in Sinophonic English. Stalling rewrites a common English phrasebook into hauntingly beautiful Chinese poetry (which is all translated into English) that when sung, becomes an uncannily accented libretto, a story of a Chinese tourist's one-way journey into this interstitial language and its sonorous, if disastrous, consequences.

Chinese Medical Glossary

Chinese Medical Glossary

This glossary contains over 2,400 biomedical English terms translated into Chinese (Traditional and Simplified), with corresponding English definitions. This medical glossary supports the work of many dedicated individuals around the country who provide services to limited English-speaking patients in health care and social service settings. In a field where misinterpretation and misunderstanding can be serious and even fatal, finding the "right words" to interpret or translate medical terminology is a tremendous challenge. We hope this glossary helps in that valuable work. The terms and phrases included range from very technical biomedical terms, such as "hysterectomy," to less technical but equally challenging terms to translate, such as "shortness of breath." This medical glossary is not definitive; it is intended to provide a foundation in medical terminology. Each medical term or phrase in the glossary is accompanied by an English definition. Each definition captures the meaning and use of a word or phrase in a biomedical context. These definitions were reviewed and edited by medical professionals.

Winter Sun: Poems (Chinese Literature Today Book Series)

Winter Sun: Poems (Chinese Literature Today Book Series)

Shi Zhi has been a major force in Chinese poetry since 1968, when several of his poems were circulated as secret handwritten manuscripts in the midst of China’s Cultural Revolution. He gave voice to the aspirations of dispirited youth, and although once relegated to obscurity, he is today celebrated as one of China’s most important cultural influences, having spawned the modern Chinese poetry revolution of the 1980s. This bilingual collection of Shi Zhi’s most significant poems, featuring an afterword by the poet himself, is the first book-length publication of his work in English.Born as Guo Lusheng in 1948, at the height of the Chinese Civil War, Shi Zhi joined the People’s Liberation Army at the age of twenty-three. Discharged early, he entered into a period of severe depression and spent much of the next three decades living in mental hospitals under harsh conditions. Taking the pen name of Shi Zhi, meaning “index finger,” to evoke the image of people pointing at his back, he continued to write poetry through these tumultuous years, chronicling his journey from the heights of fame to the depths of institutionalism and ultimately to a final redemptive return to society in 2005.  The voice of this besieged poet, burdened with exile and illness, captured the spirit of his generation and now inspires young readers.By presenting Shi Zhi’s poems in chronological order, Winter Sun allows readers to appreciate the evolution of his poetry from his earliest work to his most recent poems. Masterfully translated by Jonathan Stalling, and with an introduction by leading poetry critic Zhang Qinqua, this landmark collection ensures that Shi Zhi’s poetry—so important to Chinese readers during the most challenging of times—will engage the hearts and minds of new readers the world over for years to come.
