The Collected Songs of Cold Mountain (Mandarin Chinese and English Edition)

This authoritative, bilingual edition represents the first time the entirety of Cold Mountain's poetry has been translated into English. These translations were originally published by Copper Canyon Press nearly twenty years ago. Now, significantly revised and expanded, the collection also includes a new preface by the translator, Red Pine, whose accompanying notes are at once scholarly, accessible, and entertaining. Also included for the first time are poems by two of Cold Mountain's colleagues.Legendary for his clarity, directness, and lack of pretension, the eight-century hermit-poet Cold Mountain (Han Shan) is a major figure in the history of Chinese literature and has been a profound influence on writers and readers worldwide. Writers such as Charles Frazier and Gary Snyder studied his poetry, and Jack Kerouac's Dharma Bums is dedicated "to Han Shan." 1.Bstoried cliffs were the fortune I castbird trails beyond human trackswhat surrounds my yardwhite clouds nesting dark rocksI've lived here quite a few yearsand always seen the spring-water changetell those people with tripods and bellsempty names are no damn good 71.someone sits in a mountain gorgecloud robe sunset tasselshandful of fragrances he'd sharethe road is long and hardregretful and doubtfulold and unaccomplishedthe crowd calls him crippledhe stands alone steadfast 205.my place is on Cold Mountainperched on a cliff beyond the circuit of afflictionimages leave no trace when they vanishI roam the whole galaxy from herelights and shadows flash across my mindnot one dharma comes before mesince I found the magic pearlI can go anywhere everywhere it's perfect Cold MountainA mountain man lives under thatchbefore his gate carts and horses are rarethe forest is quiet but partial to birdsthe streams are wide and home to fishwith his son he picks wild fruitwith his wife he hoes between rockswhat does he have at homea shelf full of nothing but books

Legend of the Chinese Dragon (English and Mandarin Chinese Edition)

Legend of the Chinese Dragon (English and Mandarin Chinese Edition)

In ancient China, the different tribes lived under the protection of benevolent spirits that took the form of animals--fish, ox, bird, horse, and serpent. But, as often happens, the tribes grew envious of each other and began to fight amongst themselves in the names of their spirits. The children decided to declare a war on war by creating a creature that combined the best of all the spirits and would protect all the people. To this day, the dragon is a symbol of peace and plays an especially important role in the celebration of the Chinese New Year. This timely message of cooperation and empowerment makes this book especially appealing to trade and institutional accounts. Communities with significant Chinese populations will also have a special interest in this title. Catherine Louis' Liu and the Bird was a critical hit with review journals, teachers, and librarians.

Yingelishi: Sinophonic English Poetry and Poetics

Yingelishi: Sinophonic English Poetry and Poetics

Poetry. Asian & Asian American Studies. Music. The nearly supernatural nature of this groundbreaking work can be glimpsed in the book's title: YÍNG LÌSHI (Chanted Songs, Beautiful Poetry): SINOPHONIC ENGLISH POETRY AND POETICS. When read aloud, YÍNG LÌSHI (pronounced yeen guh lee shr) sounds like an accented pronunciation of the word "English," while the Chinese reader sees the Chinese characters for "chanted songs, beautiful poetry." Stalling coined this term (and "Sinophonic English") to give a positive name to an increasingly widespread variation of English created by combining the two dominant languages of globalization (Mandarin Chinese and English). With over 350 million English speakers in China (more than there are Americans alive) many of whom speak English by recombining existing Chinese sounds into English words and sentences, this new hybrid language is already overwhelmingly present, yet its aesthetic potential has not yet been explored. Stalling's book complicates any easy dismissal of so-called Chinglish by creating a genuinely uncanny poetry written entirely in Sinophonic English. Stalling rewrites a common English phrasebook into hauntingly beautiful Chinese poetry (which is all translated into English) that when sung, becomes an uncannily accented libretto, a story of a Chinese tourist's one-way journey into this interstitial language and its sonorous, if disastrous, consequences.
