The Comprehensive Dictionary of English & Hebrew First Names

The Comprehensive Dictionary of English & Hebrew First Names

Since the publication of his These Are the Names, Rabbi Alfred J. Kolatch, has been recognized as the world’s leading authority on English and Hebrew names and their meanings. That pioneering work paved the way for the author’s other distinguished books on nomenclature, including The Name Dictionary and Best Baby Names for Jewish Children. Now, in this most comprehensive work ever prepared on the subject, Rabbi Kolatch expands on his previous efforts by introducing many hundreds of new Hebrew names that have become popular in both Israel and the diaspora. He thereby provides an indispensable resource for parents seeking a name for their newborns, for sociologists analyzing societal trends, and for scholars tracing the evolution of language. The Comprehensive Dictionary of English & Hebrew First Names begins with an introduction that explains the origins of names and the Jewish naming process. It discusses the Bible as a source of names, names with positive attributes, celebrity names, masculine/feminine interchanges, and more. Wide-ranging in scope, the dictionary also explains the ceremonies traditionally followed for naming a boy and a girl and explores Jewish custom as it relates to naming children after relatives, naming an adopted child, and naming a convert. The entries in this book are presented alphabetically. Immediately following each entry, where applicable, the Hebrew spelling is provided in vocalized Hebrew script. The language(s) from which the name derives as well as its literal meaning are then indicated. Finally, Hebrew equivalents are offered in transliterated English. Those seeking to name a child based on meaning will find the exhaustive Index of Names by Meaning an invaluable tool.

The Word: The Dictionary That Reveals The Hebrew Source of English

The Word: The Dictionary That Reveals The Hebrew Source of English

This landmark dictionary proves that English words can be traced back to the universal, original language, Biblical Hebrew. "Genesis II" supports a 'Mother Tongue' thesis, and the Bible also claims that Adam named the animals. This may seem difficult to accept, but then why do the translations of the following animals' names: Skunk, Gopher, Giraffe and Horse actually have corresponding meanings in Biblical Hebrew, such as: Stinker, Digger, Neck and Plower! The book features overwhelming data suggesting that the roots of all human words are universal, and that words have related synonyms and antonyms that must have been intelligently designed (perhaps by the designer of life himself!) The current hypothesis that language evolved from grunting ape-men may seem like the flat earth theory after reading this book. The 22,000 English-Hebrew links provide surprising evidence, and open new worlds of understanding, once we consider that all of these similar words could not be coincidences.

The Naming of Jesus in Hebrew Matthew

The Naming of Jesus in Hebrew Matthew

The Gospel of Matthew was originally written in Hebrew before being translated into Greek and other languages. A full-color reproduction of a section of this manuscript is now available for the first time as an 18" x 24" poster; a miniature reproduction is featured on the front cover of this booklet. This booklet contains information about the poster reproduction of Hebrew Matthew including a Hebrew transcription, an English translation, and detailed explanations. Six Names of Beauty

Six Names of Beauty

Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, but it's also in the language we use and everywhere in the world around us. In this elegant, witty, and ultimately profound meditation on what is beautiful, Sartwell begins with six words from six different cultures - ancient Greek's 'to kalon', the Japanese idea of 'wabi-sabi', Hebrew's 'yapha', the Navajo concept 'hozho', Sanskrit 'sundara', and our own English-language 'beauty'. Each word becomes a door onto another way of thinking about, and looking at, what is beautiful in the world, and in our lives. The earthy and the exalted, the imperfect and the ideal: things, spaces, high art, sounds, aromas, nothingness. Sartwell writes about handfuls of beautiful things - among them, a Japanese teapot and Diana Rigg as Mrs Emma Peel, the pleasure in a well-used hammer and in pop music and in Vermeer's 'Girl in a Red Hat'. In Sartwell's hands these six names of beauty - and there could be thousands more - are revealed as simple and profound ideas about our world and our selves. 'Crispin Sartwell has written a classic book on experiencing the world aesthetically. It is rich with real examples and personal knowledge of the way each of the six names of beauty discloses a different mode of beauty's meaning in human life. The book has the clarity and acuity of philosophy at its best, without jargon or dogma or the kind of heaviness that typically weighs down the discussion of what should be marvellous to think about. I enjoyed it greatly, and would recommend it as an antidote to those that believe aesthetics is marginal or minor, and a treat for those who realize that beauty is what gives value to life at its best.' - - Arthur C. Danto, Johnsonian Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at Columbia University, and author of The Abuse of Beauty

His Name is One

His Name is One

When we read an English translation of the Bible we define the words within it according to our modern vocabulary allowing our culture and language to influence how we read and interpret the Bible. The Bible was written by ancient Hebrews whose culture and language was very different from our own and must be read and interpreted through their eyes. When we define the names of God using our culture and language we lose the Hebraic meanings behind the original Hebrew names of God. Consequently the true nature and character of God is hidden behind the veil of time and culture. By understanding the various names of God through the vocabulary and language of the ancient Hebrews, the nature and character of God is revealed to us in a new light. The prophet Zechariah described the character of God with the words "sh'mo ehhad" translated as His Name is One (Zechariah 14:9). This phrase beautifully describes the character of God from a Hebraic perspective that is lost to us through translation and unfamiliarity with ancient Hebrew culture.

The Joys of Hebrew

The Joys of Hebrew

When do you say mazal tov? What is a get, a golem, a kibbutz, a chalutz? What four plant species are waved during prayers on the harvest festival of Sukkot? You'll find answers to these questions and hundreds of others in this remarkable collection of the best known, most loved Hebrew words and phrases in the English speaking world. From Acharon to Zohar, this informative and often humorous dictionary features over six hundred Hebrew words and expressions arranged in alphabetical order (the Roman alphabet is used throughout, as well as Hebrew head words). The first such guide to Hebrew, this volume is more than a mere lexicon--it is a jubilant celebration of Hebrew itself, a treasure trove of Jewish wit, wisdom, culture, and tradition. Lewis Glinert provides a concise definition of each entry, and then illustrates the word's usage with generous passages from the Bible and the Talmud, the prayers and the sayings of famous rabbis, the razor's edge of Jewish humor, excerpts from the work of Elie Wiesel, S.Y. Agnon, Naomi Shemer and other contemporary writers, folklore from all over the Jewish world, and colorful slices of modern Israeli life. In addition, Glinert provides at the back of the book an alphabetical list of familiar biblical names in English, Sephardi/Israeli Hebrew, and Ashkenazi Hebrew.

The Book of Jasher (Book of the Just, Sefer haYashar): Referenced in 2 Samuel 2:18, Joshua 10:13, 2 Timothy 3:8. Modern English translation

The Book of Jasher (Book of the Just, Sefer haYashar): Referenced in 2 Samuel 2:18, Joshua 10:13, 2 Timothy 3:8. Modern English translation

There was no person by the name of Jasher. The name "The Book of Jasher" is an English translation of the Hebrew title Sefer haYashar, which means "The Book of the Just." The Book of Jasher it is not divine Scripture. However, it is an ancient work which is valuable for the history of Biblical times. The Book of Jasher covers the material found in Genesis, Exodus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, and Joshua, yet provides significant additional historical information, and goes into great detail about the life and times of Joseph. The Book of Jasher is mentioned twice in the Bible. 2 Samuel 2:18. "He instructed that the people should be taught the bow. Look! This is written in the Book of Jasher." (Book of the Just.) Joshua 10:13. "The Sun stood still, and the Moon stayed until the people had avenged themselves on their enemies. This is recorded in the Book of Jasher." (Book of the Just.) 2 Timothy 3:8 states, "And just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men who have distorted minds and are disqualified in the faith also oppose the truth." Jannes and Jambres are mentioned in the Book of Jasher as the magicians who opposed Moses in the presence of Pharaoh. However, Jannes and Jambres are not mentioned elsewhere in the Bible. The Book of Jasher is accepted as authentic by some scholars of The Latter-Day Saints.

The Twelve Generations of the Creation!

The Twelve Generations of the Creation!

Genesis is divided into twelve different generations, twelve epochs of variable lengths. Each epoch is full of abundant spiritual lessons. God reveals His character through His names. Therefore, fourteen different names of God in Genesis are translated from Hebrew into English. This commentary is written from the perspective of a medical doctor. There are many medical insights to be gained from Genesis on human sexuality, the menses, aging and its physical and psychological processes, the dying process, and the care of the dying patient and his/her family. The account of the creation in Genesis, and from other parts of the Bible, is compared to current scientific theories. Difficult texts from Genesis are elucidated by a review of the original text in Hebrew and in Greek for selected New Testament passages. The Biblical Timelines are traced from the time of Adam until the birth of the Christ. During his medical career, the author has studied internal medicine, geriatrics, and infectious diseases and been credentialed in these fields. He has published in scientific journals in the discipline of infectious diseases. His medical fellowships include the American College of Physicians, the American College of Physician Executives, and the American College of Healthcare Executives. He has held several administrative positions at an executive level. He has published in Christian periodicals on the subject of Medicine and the Scriptures and authored a prior book, "Family Reunion with Old Testament Patriarchs." He is a former Dean of the ORU School of Medicine, a Christian medical school. He has served on several boards of churches and Christian organizations. He has taught group Bible studies for over four decades. In order to better understand the Bible, he has studied Hebrew and Greek.

Westminster Shorter Catechism with Proof Texts (ESV): An aid for study of the Holy Bible

Westminster Shorter Catechism with Proof Texts (ESV): An aid for study of the Holy Bible

This volume is the 1647 Catechism. The proof texts are from the modern ESV (English Standard Version). The ESV is based on the Masoretic text of the Hebrew Bible as found in Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia (2nd ed., 1983), and on the Greek text in the 1993 editions of the Greek New Testament (4th corrected ed.), published by the United Bible Societies (UBS), and Novum Testamentum Graece (27th ed.), edited by Nestle and Aland. Throughout, the translation team has benefited greatly from the massive textual resources that have become readily available recently, from new insights into biblical laws and culture, and from current advances in Hebrew and Greek lexicography and grammatical understanding. Also included is an index of subjects from the questions and answers. This 246 page volume is generous with space left on each of the pages for you to write your notes and remarks as you study over the years. The resulting book will be valued by you for the perspective your study provides and by your descendants as a priceless keepsake and instruction manual. Sample text: Q 1 What is the chief end of man? A Man’s chief end is to glorify God(1), and to enjoy him forever.(2) (1)A Prayer of David. Incline your ear, O LORD, and answer me, for I am poor and needy. Preserve my life, for I am godly; save your servant, who trusts in you--you are my God. Be gracious to me, O Lord, for to you do I cry all the day. Gladden the soul of your servant, for to you, O Lord, do I lift up my soul. For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving, abounding in steadfast love to all who call upon you. Give ear, O LORD, to my prayer; listen to my plea for grace. In the day of my trouble I call upon you, for you answer me. There is none like you among the gods, O Lord, nor are there any works like yours. All the nations you have made shall come and worship before you, O Lord, and shall glorify your name. For you are great and do wondrous things; you alone are God. Teach me your way, O LORD, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name. I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart, and I will glorify your name forever. For great is your steadfast love toward me; you have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol. O God, insolent men have risen up against me; a band of ruthless men seeks my life, and they do not set you before them. But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness. Turn to me and be gracious to me; give your strength to your servant, and save the son of your maidservant. Show me a sign of your favor, that those who hate me may see and be put to shame because you, LORD, have helped me and comforted me. (Psalms 86:1-17) Your people shall all be righteous; they shall possess the land forever, the branch of my planting, the work of my hands, that I might be glorified. (Isaiah 60:21) For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen. (Romans 11:36) for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. (1 Corinthians 6:20) So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. (1 Corinthians 10:31) (2) The LORD is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot. The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance. I bless the LORD who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me. I have set the LORD always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure. For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption. You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore. (Psalms 16:5-11)
