Lost and Found in Translation: Contemporary Ethnic American Writing and the Politics of Language Diversity

Lost and Found in Translation: Contemporary Ethnic American Writing and the Politics of Language Diversity

Starting with Salman Rushdie's assertion that even though something is always lost in translation, something can always be gained, Martha Cutter examines the trope of translation in twenty English-language novels and autobiographies by contemporary ethnic American writers. She argues that these works advocate a politics of language diversity--a literary and social agenda that validates the multiplicity of ethnic cultures and tongues in the United States. Cutter studies works by Asian American, Native American, African American, and Mexican American authors. She argues that translation between cultures, languages, and dialects creates a new language that, in its diversity, constitutes the true heritage of the United States. Through the metaphor of translation, Cutter demonstrates, writers such as Maxine Hong Kingston, Sherman Alexie, Toni Morrison, and Richard Rodriguez establish a place within American society for the many languages spoken by multiethnic and multicultural individuals. Cutter concludes with an analysis of contemporary debates over language policy, such as English-only legislation, the recognition of Ebonics, and the growing acceptance of bilingualism. The focus on translation by so many multiethnic writers, she contends, offers hope in our postmodern culture for a new condition in which creatively fused languages renovate the communications of the dominant society and create new kinds of identity for multicultural individuals.

Translation and The Language of Information Technology: A Corpus-based Study of the Vocabulary of Information Technology in English and its Translation into Arabic and Swedish

Translation and The Language of Information Technology: A Corpus-based Study of the Vocabulary of Information Technology in English and its Translation into Arabic and Swedish

This book is an in-depth study of the vocabulary of the language of information technology and how it is translated into Arabic and Swedish. It provides an insight in the way LIT is translated and how translators go about dealing with the different aspects of IT lexis such as collocation, metaphor, abbreviations and acronyms as well as menus and commands of the graphical user interface. The book discusses the emerging language of IT in English and its interaction with technology, which resulted in a special usage. It examines IT key words and their collocations, and how they are translated into both Arabic and Swedish. It also investigates how metaphor is used as a means of producing IT vocabulary and the way it is translated. The findings of the study are based on three electronic corpora of millions of words (one corpus for each language) that were specially compiled for the study. One pioneering aspect of the book is the discussion of how software and web site interfaces are dealt with in a translational context in both TLs. The book is very useful for researchers and students of Translation Studies, Corpus Linguistics, and Localization as well as for translators and localizers.

The Pinocchio Catalogue: Being a Descriptive Bibliography and Printing History of English Language Translations and Other Renditions Appearing in the ... and Indexes in World Literature)

Throughout the world Pinocchio is acknowledged as a rich tale about growing up and self-discovery, an exciting adventure for young children, and a chance to reflect, recall, and understand for adults. In addition to providing the most complete list of English language Pinnochio editions thus far compiled, each of the more than 850 entries in this catalogue is fully described, distinguishing first editions from later releases. Compiled by means of actual copies, all citations state the source of the copy described. Each entry consists of full bibliographic credits, identification of the version, physical description of the volume, occasional other notes, and then traces the edition (when a reprint or reissue) back to its original source. A synopsis is added for Pinocchio continuations. Entries being listed by year of release, this carefully constructed reference is designed for ready access by date, publisher index, name index, and synoptic table. In addition to other information they provide, the notes on publishers are particularly useful for interpreting printing marks, identifying changes in cover, title page, etc., and establishing various series dates and prices. This unique and comprehensive catalogue examines many previously unrecorded editions and sorts out whole assemblies of apparently similar volumes in a completely accessible format. Limiting Disney versions to 1939-40, the catalogue also includes plays, films, radio program, TV shows, and other renditions. It will be an immensely useful resource for book dealers, libraries, and collectors of children's literature.

How Arab Journalists Translate English-Language Newspaper Headlines: Case Studies in Cross-Cultural Understanding

How Arab Journalists Translate English-Language Newspaper Headlines: Case Studies in Cross-Cultural Understanding

This work is a comparative descriptive analysis of seventy English language headlines and their Arabic translations gathered from the Arab national and international press and news agencies over the period of January 1, 2002 through August 1, 2002. While headline translation has received some attention from scholars, only a small amount of the literature deals specifically with the translation of English language headlines into Arabic. The ideological, political, national, and cultural basis of the source and target societies significantly affects the mode of translation and the message conveyed. These discourse factors, which almost always divide along an East-West line, are generally most evident in the first expression of a news headline which often functions as or designates the headline actor or agent. Other headline aspects such as headline function, content, and length are also controlled by the news discourse factors deemed most important to the dominant group. Lexical selection, style, and rhetoric in news headline writing and translation is not incidental or arbitrary but deliberate which makes these aspects of news headline discourse a portal through which hidden opinions or ideologies may surface. Translators do not follow identifiable strategies in their translations. Instead, general Skopos Theory allows the translator to make the source text headline more effective by the appropriate lexical style and rhetorical devices applied in the translated headline. The relevance of discourse analysis extends beyond the examination of individual words or isolated sentences. The macro and micro comparative analysis of isolated words and sentences is incomplete without consideration of discourse influenced transformational strategies that shape and guide the translation of news headlines.

Found in Translation: Greek Drama in English

Found in Translation: Greek Drama in English

In considering the practice and theory of translating Classical Greek plays into English from a theatrical perspective, Found in Translation also addresses the wider issues of transferring any piece of theatre from a source into a target language. The history of translating classical tragedy and comedy, here fully investigated, demonstrates how through the ages translators have, wittingly or unwittingly, appropriated Greek plays and made them reflect socio-political concerns of their own era. Chapters are devoted to topics including verse and prose, mask and non-verbal language, stage directions and subtext and translating the comic. Among the plays discussed as 'case studies' are Aeschylus' Agamemnon, Sophocles' Oedipus Tyrannus and Euripides' Medea and Alcestis. The book concludes with a consideration of the boundaries between 'translation' and 'adaptation', followed by an appendix of every translation of Greek tragedy and comedy into English from the 1550s to the present day.
