As the title suggests, Rollins is supported by two different trios, with the lion's share of the work going to the Tommy Flanagan/Bob Cranshaw/Al Foster ensemble (Steven Scott and Jack DeJohnette spell Flanagan and Foster for two cuts). It's mostly a program of standards, and the tenorist stretches out in a most luxurious way, with the tunes clocking in at between six and twelve minutes. Of his two compositional contributions, one is based loosely on the changes to "I Got Rhythm," the other is essentially a blues. Demba Barry steps up with an unexpectedly punchy African hip-hop-styled vocal on "Shadowman," "Lagan" plays out into an orchestral swan dive, and, throughout, Johnny Kalsi and Moussa Sissokho come on like gangbusters with the drums. Real World label honcho and world-music champion Peter Gabriel does a stunning turn on the eminently catchy "When You're Falling," and Robert Plant contributes a powerfully epic rock vocal on "Life Begins Again." Fine as all these moments are, the centerpiece of volume 3, where the band achieves beyond perfect synthesis, is the ecstatic groove-lock on the African acid ceilidh of "Colossus." If there's any irony to tracks like "I'm Not Your Boyfriend Baby" (sounds like a Lil Jon and Calvin Harris car crash) or "Star Struckk" (starts all chiptunes then goes ringtone rap before turning disco), it's buried so deep it really doesn't matter anymore. It's as if this duo from Boulder, CO, stole all the surface bits of Andrew W.K., Princess Superstar, plus Lady GaGa and created an album that can only be discussed in terms of "Awesome!" or "Sucks!" If you like fat beats lifted from old-school hip-hop, Scott Storch, and Chromeo with slim, lean hooks that won't be leaving the head anytime soon, it's awesome. If you don't care for thin ideas, sophomoric humor, or Warped Tour attitude, it sucks. Spank Rock made this kind of nu-booty music with much more finesse.
