Cities and Forms (English and French Edition)

Cities and Forms (English and French Edition)

Cities and Forms, On Sustainable Urbanism probes the crucial issue of the shape to give to sustainable cities in the future. It unfolds a rich mosaic of two thousand years of urban history in the East and in the West through 1,200 drawings, city plans and photographs, all of which is correlated with thousands of results of original analyses for a wide range of urban textures, from Siena and Venice to New York, Brasilia, Tokyo, Beijing, and Shanghai. Cities and Forms also features a detailed comparative study of Haussmanian Paris and Le Corbusier's Radiant City, and an in-depth analysis of Chinese cities. This book provides a measurable scientific dimension to such essential notions of sustainable urbanism as density, connectivity, functional mix and accessibility, by exploring the qualities of historic urban fabrics. Readers will become familiar with organic patterns, grids, transformations, and the hidden order and fractal symmetries that connect urban scales, and endow the city with a meaningful, human order, which fosters social integration and cultural diversity, appropriable by residents but at the same time structured like an ecosystem. Morphology appears in this book as the key lever for cities to adapt to climate change. It enhances efficiency by cutting energy consumption in half. The connectivity of its networks reinforces urban resilience, on the model of such natural structures as the hierarchic, intensely connected network of nervures in leaves. Cities and Forms develops a method of urban composition founded on perceptive qualities, and the design of public spaces, squares, streets, and visual sequences. It forms the bases of a return to the city as a place of memory and history, and of a controlled relationship between the urban fabric and building typology. By the abundance of its new findings, its methods and its concrete application of complexity theories, this book is of utmost importance to architects, urban planners, decision-makers, and anyone eager to understand sustainable cities and contribute to their development.

French Anglicisms: The Amazing Number of French Words that Come from English (French Edition)

French Anglicisms: The Amazing Number of French Words that Come from English (French Edition)

We are so used to hearing about all the French words that are found in English and about how purist the French are about their language, that we don't realize how many English words have migrated into French. You'll be astonished by how many English words are used in French. French is inundated with them! Swamped with them! Most are native English words, but surprisingly, some were originally French words which moved into English long ago, evolved a different meaning, and then moved back to French with the new meaning as anglicismes. English words aren't always taken into French with the same spelling and usage as they have in our language. For example, you’ll encounter le week-end, which has gained a hyphen, and le warning which doesn’t mean “the warning” in a general sense, but specifically means the emergency lights or flashers on a car. Some words are specific to certain sports, like l’uppercut or le football, or to other activities, such as playing bridge, while other words which are general in English have only limited meanings in French. An example is le slice, which only refers to golf and tennis, and not to a slice of melon, for instance. Some words are so well integrated into French that the average Frenchman wouldn’t be aware that they are words of English origin. At the other extreme are words that that same Frenchman would recognize immediately as English words even though he uses them without reflection (much as we would say ravioli and pizza are Italian words, or taco and tamale are Mexican Spanish words). All these words will be marked as anglicisme or mot anglais in a French dictionary like Le Petit Robert, and the use of some of them would be frowned on in formal speech or writing, but many are very widely used in normal casual speech. You'll find it a fascinating book. READ WHAT PROFESSORS AND INSTRUCTORS OF FRENCH AND OTHERS HAVE WRITTEN ABOUT EARLIER BOOKS IN THIS SERIES: I think your books are wonderful. You have made a fantastic contribution to the French language profession. --- Prof. Judy Baughin, Raymond Walters College You have done a real service to learners of French...This is important work. --- Prof. John Romeiser, U. of Tenn. I have to say your Key Words and Expressions is just the kind of book I would have liked to have had when I was teaching myself French oh-so-many years ago. --- Prof. John Moran, Dir.Language Programs, NYU If you really want to learn spoken French, you need this book (Key Words). You'll need other books as well, you'll need audio materials, and you'll need live language experience. But this book is a necessity. ---- reader reviewer amazon.com I love the Faux Amis, especially the relaxed, conversational presentation. ---- Prof. Norman Shapiro, Wesleyan U. Your little books are great! ---- Prof. AG Fralin, Washington and Lee U. I absolutely *love* Faux Amis. It's so well done. --- Prof. Herta Rodina, Ohio U. I love your books! They are easy to navigate, and they are extremely useful to non-native French speakers. ---- Prof. John Turvaville, U. of Tenn. Perhaps the most amazing thing about this book (Key Words) is that it took until 2007 for anyone to think of writing it! ---- reader reviewer amazon.com The books are excellent.---- Prof. Luke Bouvier, U. of Mass, Amherst I've been perusing Key Words for the past couple of days and it's great fun… What a great idea for a book! --- Prof. Herta Rodina, Ohio U. This (Key Words)is easily one of the best and most important French resources I own (and I've got dozens of them)... It's amazing, absolutely amazing how this book has improved my understanding of spoken French. – reader reviewer, amazon.com I wish Rosenthal had written Rules for the Gender of French Nouns twenty years ago when I was a student. – Stephen Hedge, review in "The French Review"

Institutes of the Christian Religion: The First English Version of the 1541 French Edition

Institutes of the Christian Religion: The First English Version of the 1541 French Edition

The first English translation of a classic text of pastoral theology. / John Calvin (1509–1564) originally wrote his famous Institutes of the Christian Religion in Latin. Beginning with the second edition of his work published in 1541, Calvin translated each new version into French, simultaneously adapting the text to suit lay audiences, shaping it subtly but clearly to teach, exhort, and encourage them. Besides reflecting a more pastoral bent on Calvin's part, this 1541 Institutes is also notable as one of the founding documents of the modern French language. / Elsie Anne McKee's masterful translation of the 1541 French Edition — the first-ever English version — offers full access to the brilliant mind of John Calvin as he considered what common Christian people should all know and practice. / “This sparkling translation of John Calvin’s 1541 French Institutes offers modern-day readers in the English-speaking world the opportunity to read Calvin’s first version of his masterwork intended for a general audience. Elsie McKee is to be commended for her faithful yet accessible translation of this key text.”— Karin Maag / Henry Meeter Center for Calvin Studies, Calvin College and Seminary / major event for Calvin students! English-language readers can, at last, access and use the 1541 version of the Institutes. Scholars of repute consider this version the most admirable of all: it combines freshness and maturity, it is not overloaded with polemical developments, and, as the first theological work in the vernacular, it made a decisive contribution toward shaping modern French. It is a landmark in Calvin’s corpus. Elsie McKee’s translation, checked against the original French, remains scrupulously accurate, while it reads with ease and harmonious fluidity.”— Henri Blocher / Facult Libre de Thologie Evanglique / Wheaton College Graduate School / “I am impressed with what Elsie McKee has accomplished. It is amazing how she has managed to translate Calvin’s smooth French into an English that is a pleasure to read. Even more important, however, is that she has made this important work of Calvin accessible for a wide audience, so all can experience the stimulus that reading Calvin can give to the church and theology today.”— Herman J. Selderhuis / Theologische Universiteit Appeldoorn / “The 1541 edition of the Institutes has long been considered a gem among the various editions of Calvin’s classic. Its special virtues are that it is more concise than the final 1559 edition and also more pastoral and practical, reflecting Calvin’s years in the ministry. Finally we have a superb English translation of this edition by a premier Calvin scholar. Elsie McKee knows Calvin and knows French. The result is a wonderful contribution to Calvin studies in the English-speaking world. Readers of this version will gain fresh perspectives and new insights into the Reformer’s theology.”— I. These Animals... Don't Want to Wash! (Bilingual English-French)

These Animals... Don't Want to Wash! (Bilingual English-French)

Well... it seems that these animals don’t want to wash! But step by step, each one discovers that to wash their feet, their hands and their teeth is really very important for animals, as well as for children! A funny way to learn and a funny way to teach. As everyone knows how difficult it can be to explain to young children how important it is to wash... This is the 1st Episode of “The Book of The Animals” children's books series by J.N. Paquet. FUN LEARNING FOR CHILDREN AND PARENTS What are certainly the most occurring moments in a parent’s life? When their child doesn’t want to wash, eat, sleep, share and go to school. And what can a parent answer to these refusals? The successful “Book of The Animals” bilingual children’s books series was created with the aim to help both parents and children to discover the benefits of washing, eating, sleeping and going to school, in a fun as well as educational manner. Since the books are also bilingual, parents will enjoy the teaching and the interactivity they can gain from reading them with their children. “These Animals... Don't Want to Wash!” is one more example of that reciprocal fun learning. It is the first episode of the series by author J.N. Paquet. It is currently available both as paperback and eBook formats. In this new episode of the series, children will discover the benefits of washing, with the help of their favourite friends, the animals! As with the other books in the series, children will not only discover the benefits of washing, but they will also discover some new animals, new words and new situations. The book makes fun learning something essential in the child's general learning process. THE AUDIENCE The books are geared towards children aged 2-5, before elementary/primary school. They will likely be bilingual children whose parents want to encourage the learning of their two current languages. They will also be children whose parents want to teach a language at a young age. THE CURRENT BOOKS Each episode of the series brings on new animals, new words, new situations and new stories. - Ep.1. “These Animals... Don't Want to Wash!” (2008) - Ep.2. “These Animals... Don't Want to Eat!” (2009) - Ep.3. “These Animals... Don't Want to Sleep!” (2010) - Ep.4. “These Animals... Don't Want to Go to School!” (2011) - Ep.5. “These Animals... Don't Want to Share!” (2011) The books are all available in either bilingual or monolingual versions: - Bilingual versions: English-French, English-Portuguese, English-Italian, English-Spanish, and English-Swedish. - Monolingual versions: English, French, Portuguese, Italian, Spanish, and Swedish. More versions are still to come... REVIEW “The Book of the Animals is a planned series of illustrated books for young children. [...] These delightful books tell the story of what happens when the animals in the stories, like many young children, don’t want to eat and don’t want to wash... The books are very suitable both for reading to young children and for older children to use to learn to read in both languages. They might even persuade them to wash and eat their dinner! The repetitive structure is supportive of children learning new words and the illustrations work well alongside the text to help understanding of unfamiliar words. I can easily imagine young children demanding repeat readings and enjoying learning the text by heart as many children do with favourite stories. Children learning to make up and write their own stories might well want to write a personalised version, using the structure as a prop. I think the stories would work well both in the home and in the classroom.” (Review published in The Cass School of Education, by Dr Raymonde Sneddon, Research Fellow for “The Cass School of Education” at the University of East London, and Honorary Research Fellow of Birkbeck College, in the Departmnent of Applied Linguistics and Communication.) The Beginning Translator's Workbook: Or the ABC of French to English Translation

The Beginning Translator's Workbook: Or the ABC of French to English Translation

This workbook combines methodology and practice for use in a course for beginning translators with a proficiency in French ranging from intermediate to advanced level. It takes a linguistic approach to the problems of translation in addressing common and major pitfalls: delineation of 'translation units' or what constitutes a concept beyond mere words, word polysemy, false cognates, structural and cultural obstacles to literal translation. It offers chapter by chapter explanations of the various strategies used by professional translators to counter these problems: the translation devices known as transposition, modulation, equivalence, and adaptation. Each chapter concludes with a variety of practice exercises focusing on one specific problem. The second part of the book is a global application of all the principles taught in the first part and guides the student step by step through the actual translation of a choice of literary (prose, poetry, and plays) and non-literary excerpts.
