These Animals... Don't Want to Wash! (Bilingual English-Portuguese)

These Animals... Don't Want to Wash! (Bilingual English-Portuguese)

Well... it seems that these animals don’t want to wash! But step by step, each one discovers that to wash their feet, their hands and their teeth is really very important for animals, as well as for children! A funny way to learn and a funny way to teach. As everyone knows how difficult it can be to explain to young children how important it is to wash... This is the 1st Episode of “The Book of The Animals” children's books series by J.N. Paquet. FUN LEARNING FOR CHILDREN AND PARENTS What are certainly the most occurring moments in a parent’s life? When their child doesn’t want to wash, eat, sleep, share and doesn’t want to go to school. And what can a parent answer to these refusals? The successful “Book of The Animals” bilingual children’s books series was created with the aim to help both parents and children to discover the benefits of washing, eating, sleeping and going to school, in a fun as well as educational manner. Since the books are also bilingual, parents will enjoy the teaching and the interactivity they can gain from reading them with their children. “These Animals... Don't Want to Wash!” is one more example of that reciprocal fun learning. It is the first episode of the series by author J.N. Paquet. It is currently available both as paperback and eBook formats. In this new episode of the series, children will discover the benefits of washing, with the help of their favourite friends, the animals! As with the other books in the series, children will not only discover the benefits of washing, but they will also discover some new animals, new words and new situations. The book makes fun learning something essential in the child's general learning process. THE AUDIENCE The books are geared towards children aged 2-5, before elementary/primary school. They will likely be bilingual children whose parents want to encourage the learning of their two current languages. They will also be children whose parents want to teach a language at a young age. THE CURRENT BOOKS Each episode of the series brings on new animals, new words, new situations and new stories. - Ep.1. “These Animals... Don't Want to Wash!” (2008) - Ep.2. “These Animals... Don't Want to Eat!” (2009) - Ep.3. “These Animals... Don't Want to Sleep!” (2010) - Ep.4. “These Animals... Don't Want to Go to School!” (2011) - Ep.5. “These Animals... Don't Want to Share!” (2011) The books are all available in either bilingual or monolingual versions: - Bilingual versions: English-French, English-Portuguese, English-Italian, English-Spanish, and English-Swedish. - Monolingual versions: English, French, Portuguese, Italian, Spanish, and Swedish. More versions are still to come... REVIEW “The Book of the Animals is a planned series of illustrated books for young children. [...] These delightful books tell the story of what happens when the animals in the stories, like many young children, don’t want to eat and don’t want to wash... The books are very suitable both for reading to young children and for older children to use to learn to read in both languages. They might even persuade them to wash and eat their dinner! The repetitive structure is supportive of children learning new words and the illustrations work well alongside the text to help understanding of unfamiliar words. I can easily imagine young children demanding repeat readings and enjoying learning the text by heart as many children do with favourite stories. Children learning to make up and write their own stories might well want to write a personalised version, using the structure as a prop. I think the stories would work well both in the home and in the classroom.” (Review published in The Cass School of Education, by Dr Raymonde Sneddon, Research Fellow for “The Cass School of Education” at the University of East London, and Honorary Research Fellow of Birkbeck College, in the Departmnent of Applied Linguistics and Communication.) Poets of Brazil: A Bilingual Selection

Poets of Brazil: A Bilingual Selection

The first bilingual anthology of Brazilian Poetry to cover its entire 500-year-long history, this book drew the following comment from Yale\'s expert in world literature, Harold Bloom: Poets of Brazil: A Bilingual Selection is the only book available that gives these poets to us in both languages, Portuguese and American English. The choice of poets is remarkably inclusive and various and is particularly enlightening in the works of the twentieth-century Republic of Brazil. In particular, the representation of Manuel Bandeira, of the three Andrades and of Archanjo are brilliantly rendered. The quality of the introduction and notes is also estimable.

Selected Sonnets: A Bilingual Edition

The most important writer in Portuguese history and one of the preeminent European poets of the early modern era, Luís de Camões (1524–80) has been ranked as a sonneteer on par with Petrarch, Dante, and Shakespeare. Championed and admired by such poets as William Blake, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Edgar Allan Poe, and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Camões was renowned for his intensely personal sonnets and equally intense life of adventure. The first significant English translation of Camões’s sonnets in more than one hundred years, Selected Sonnets: A Bilingual Edition collects seventy of Camões’s best—all musically rendered by William Baer into contemporary, yet metrical and rhymed, English-language poetry, with the original Portuguese on facing pages.     A comprehensive selection of sonnets that demonstrates the full range of Camões’s interests and invention, Selected Sonnets will prove indispensable for both students and teachers in comparative and Renaissance literature, Portuguese and Spanish history, and the art of literary translation.     “Splendidly produced. . . .William Baer brings [Camões’s] sonnets forward as accomplished, indeed often beautiful, examples of this Renaissance invention.”—Jeffery Hart, National Review      “William Baer’s artistry gives the reader translations that convey much of the poetry’s original directness and simplicity, along with the intensity, timbre, and subtlety of the original imagery and themes. . . . Selected English Poems

Selected English Poems

Pessoa wrote a large number of poems in English, some of them in the guise of early heteronyms (such as Alexander Search and Charles Robert Anon) which prove to be fascinating precursors of the later, modernist work in Portuguese. While not the equal of the masterly Caeiro, Campos, Reis or Pessoa-himself, these poems deserve to be better known and at least available in the English-speaking world. Pessoa was educated in English in Durban, as the stepson of a Portuguese diplomat, and was completely bilingual. He translated several books from English for Portuguese publishing houses. The sometimes startlingly frank content of the earlier English poems - published privately in Lisbon - may well have prevented their wider dissemination in more prudish British circles. What is not so well-known is that Pessoa continued to write poetry in a bookish form of English throughout his life and this volume is an attempt to show the nature of that work to its originally intended audience - an anglophone readership.

Twentieth-Century Latin American Poetry: A Bilingual Anthology (Texas Pan American Series) (English and Spanish Edition)

Twentieth-Century Latin American Poetry: A Bilingual Anthology (Texas Pan American Series) (English and Spanish Edition)

Latin Americans have written some of the world's finest poetry in the twentieth century, as the Nobel Prizes awarded to Gabriela Mistral, Pablo Neruda, and Octavio Paz attest. Yet this rich literary production has never been gathered into a single volume that attempts to represent the full range and the most important writers-until now. Here, under one cover, are the major poets and their major works, which appear both in the original language (Spanish or Portuguese) and in excellent English translations. The poems selected include the most famous representative poems of each poetic tradition, accompanied by other poems that represent the best of that tradition and of each poet's work within it. Tapscott's selections cover the full range, from the Modernist generation though the Mexican Revolutionary post-Moderns and the Vanguardist poets to very contemporary younger writers of political and experimental commitments. In all, eighty-five poets, including Pablo Neruda, Nicanor Parra, Octavio Paz, Gabriela Mistral, Nicolás Guillén, Jorge Luis Borges, Julio Cortazar, Carlos Drummond de Andrade, Carlos Pellicer, César Vallejo, and Cecília Meireles, and over 400 poems are included, often in translations by some of North America's most esteemed poets.
