Building for Victory: World War II in China, Burma, and India and the 1875th Engineer Aviation Battalion

Building for Victory: World War II in China, Burma, and India and the 1875th Engineer Aviation Battalion

While American troops advanced across the European continent and the vast reaches of the Pacific, they were also fighting, and dying in a remote arena viewed as a sideshow by Allied leaders. In this theater of limited resources, great distances, challenging terrain, and Byzantine politics, American military commanders thus intended to commit few if any conventional forces, yet needed to secure northern Burma to ensure the flow of supplies to the embattled Nationalists. Herein, King, a decorated lietenant with a highly-regarded battalion that fought throughout the East, recounts his darling and often bittersweet military experiences from 1943 to 1945.

Mental Illness and American Society, 1875-1940

“What caused deinstitutionalization? Why were psychiatricsts and other mental halth workers willing to allow responsbility for partients to be shifted from mental hospitals (largely public) that provided long-term custodial care to local communitites? Gerald Grob’s excellent new book is the first to provide a convinceing explanation for that transition. Unlike mental health journalists, Grob demonstrates that the basic forces for change were fully in place before the large shift of patient populations commenced at the end of World War II.” --Lawrence J. Friedman Reviews in American History “Gerald N. Grob has been exploring the history of American mental hospitals for nearly twenty years, with emphasis on public policy. This book, which brings the story up to the Second World War, has a broader compass than his previous work in being more deeply concerned with public attitudes and the evolution of the psychiatric profession. It is also a counter-revisionist work, a careful scholars’s answer to Michel Foucault, David Rothman, Andrew Scull, and other historians who are united, Grob says, in having ‘a critical if not hostile view of psychiatry and mental hospitals.’” -Norman Dain American Historical Review Gerald Grob examines the complex interrealtionships of patients, psychiatrists, mental hospitals, and government between 1875 and World War II. Challenging the now prevalent notion that mental hospitals in this period functioned as jails, he finds that, despite their shortcomings, they provided care for people unable to survive by themselves. From a rich variety of previously unexploited sources, he shows how professional and political concerns, rather than patient needs, changed American attitudes toward mental hospitals from support to antipathy. Gerald N. Grob is Professor of History at Rutgers University and has a joint appointment in the Institute for Heatlth, Health Care Policy, and Aging Research. In 1986 he received the William H. Welch Medal of the American Association for the Hitory of Medicine. Among his works are Mental Institutions in America: Social Policy to 1875 (Free Press), Edward Jarvis and the Medical World of Nineteenth-Century America (Tennessee), and The State and the Mentally Ill (North Carolina).

The Art of Japanese Craft: 1875 to the Present (Philadelphia Museum of Art)

The Art of Japanese Craft: 1875 to the Present (Philadelphia Museum of Art)

From Japan’s first forays onto the international stage of world’s fairs in the late 19th century to the dynamic creativity of the 1920 and 1930s, from the heady post–World War II period to the present day, Japanese crafts have exhibited a rich diversity of media and techniques. One of the first illustrated surveys in English of modern-era Japanese crafts––including ceramics, lacquerware, metalcraft, and wood––this elegant book, with 70 color illustrations, is an invaluable guide for the collector and scholar. Focusing on an important collection of Japanese crafts destined for the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the text discusses the artists and ideas that shaped and defined the aesthetic of 20th-century Japan, noting that this nation—which so deeply appreciates and fosters its crafts traditions—hails its artists as “living national treasures.” The book also includes artists’ biographies and reproductions of their signatures and marks.

The Rise of the New Woman: The Women's Movement in America, 1875-1930 (American Ways Series)

The Rise of the New Woman: The Women's Movement in America, 1875-1930 (American Ways Series)

Following on her history of the women's movement in America that took the story to 1876, Jean Matthews's new book chronicles the changing fortunes and transformations of the organized suffrage movement, from its dismal period of declining numbers and campaign failures to its final victory in the Nineteenth Amendment that brought women the vote. Ms. Matthews's engaging narrative recaptures the personalities and ideas that characterized the movement in these years. She draws deft portraits and analyzes the intellectual currents—in politics, the economy, sexuality, and social thought—that competed for women's commitment. And she shows how new leadership and new strategies at last brought success in the long struggle during which many feminist leaders had grown old. The Rise of the New Woman emphasizes the historical contexts, including progressivism, in which the women's movement operated; the disputes and tensions within the movement itself; and the perennial question of who was to be included and excluded in the quest for women's rights. It also considers the often baffling aftereffects of the 1920 constitutional victory, when women found themselves wondering what to do next. With 24 black-and-white illustrations. American Ways Series."Lively and informative."—Kirkus Reviews"Although Matthews frequently paints her historical overview in broad strokes, she nonetheless excels at filling in a fascinating background, giving new insights on lesser-known but equally influential people, facts, and situations."—Booklist

Looking Good: College Women and Body Image, 1875-1930 (Gender Relations in the American Experience)

Looking Good: College Women and Body Image, 1875-1930 (Gender Relations in the American Experience)

Toward the end of the nineteenth century, as young women began entering college in greater numbers than ever before, physicians and social critics charged that campus life posed grave hazards to the female constitution and women's reproductive health. "A girl could study and learn," Dr. Edward Clarke warned in his widely read 1873 book Sex in Education, "but she could not do all this and retain uninjured health, and a future secure from neuralgia, uterine disease, hysteria, and other derangements of the nervous system." For half a century, ideas such as Dr. Clarke's framed the debate over a woman's place in higher education almost exclusively in terms of her body and her health. For historian Margaret A. Lowe, this obsession offers one of the clearest expressions of the social and cultural meanings given to the female body between 1875 and 1930. At the same time, the "college girl" was a novelty that tested new ideas about feminine beauty, sexuality, and athleticism. In Looking Good, Lowe examines the ways in which college women at three quite different institutions—Cornell University, Smith College, and Spelman College—regarded their own bodies in this period. Contrasting white and black students, single-sex and coeducational schools, secular and religious environments, and Northern and Southern attitudes, Lowe draws on student diaries, letters, and publications; institutional records; and accounts in the popular press to examine the process by which new, twentieth-century ideals of the female body took hold in America.
