Business Technology: A Guide for Midsize and Small Business

Business Technology: A Guide for Midsize and Small Business

It wasn't that long ago when business technology was limited to a fax machine and a photocopier, but the last ten years have revolutionized the way business is done. These changes have created challenges and opportunities for every American business. In Business Technology, Michael W. Johnson explains that though large corporations have huge technology departments dedicated to solving complex problems and building new ways to market and sell their products, that today small business can compete and win, thanks to the newest advances in business technology (hardware, software, and communications). Small business can now do everything a big company can, including: Using technology to cut costs on everything from payroll to copier paper. Using social networking to acquire new customers and retain existing ones. Outsourcing technology support to save time and money. Using CRM systems to determine which customers are profitable customers and which are not. Using Integrated Business Systems to significantly improve the quality of operations. Using video conferencing to save on travel costs... and more! Most of all, what a small business needs is good advice. That's where Michael W. Johnson and his new book Business Technology can help. In it, he outlines the opportunities the technological revolution offers and describes the technologies used by technology savvy companies to effectively operate and grow their business. And he does it in a way that anyone can understand. Business Technology is not a book for technical people. It is a book for business people who want to know how to use technology to make their business become more efficient and more profitable.

Machine Shop Trade Secrets

Machine Shop Trade Secrets

“…James Harvey has written an excellent book that fills a void in current metalworking instructional books. Most textbooks are aimed at the beginner in the machining trade and cover basic work practice admirably. What textbooks do not do is sit you down with a veteran of the trade who can fill you in on the tips and tricks that allow working faster, accurately and intelligently. What amazed me is at how all these tips are not recycled versions of the ones we are all familiar with (as published by Lindsay's books and others) but are new tips, all useful and pertinent to the tools and methods of today.”Nicholas CarterWritten by an experienced machinist and plastic injection mold maker, this groundbreaking manual will have users thinking and producing like experienced machinists. Machine Shop Trade Secrets provides practical “how-to” information that can immediately be put to use to improve ones machining skills, craftsmanship, and productivity. It is sure to be used and referred to time and again. You will discover ways to:Work faster.Select, make, and grind cutters.Surface grind blocks, pins and shapesCut threads, knurl parts and eliminate warp.Choose realistic feeds, speeds and depths of cut.Remove broken taps, drill bits and other hardware.Apply proven CNC techniques to maximize output.Improve surface finishes and hold tighter tolerancesAssist engineers with design and manufacturing issues.Improve indicating skills and develop a “feel” for machining.

Talking about Machines: An Ethnography of a Modern Job (Collection on Technology and Work)

Talking about Machines: An Ethnography of a Modern Job (Collection on Technology and Work)

This is a story of how work gets done. It is also a study of how field service technicians talk about their work and how that talk is instrumental in their success. In his innovative ethnography, Julian E. Orr studies the people who repair photocopiers and shares vignettes from their daily lives. He characterizes their work as a continuous highly skilled improvisation within a triangular relationship of technician, customer, and machine. The work technicians do encompasses elements not contained in the official definition of the job yet vital to its success. Orr's analysis of the way repair people talk about their work reveals that talk is, in fact, a crucial dimension of their practice. Diagnosis happens through a narrative process, the creation of a coherent description of the troubled machine. The descriptions become the basis for technicians' discourse about their experience, and the circulation of stories among the technicians is the principal means by which they stay informed of the developing subtleties of machine behavior. Orr demonstrates that technical knowledge is a socially distributed resource stored and diffused primarily through an oral culture.Based on participant observation with copier repair technicians in the field and strengthened by Orr's own years as a technician, this book explodes numerous myths about technicians and suggests how technical work differs from other kinds of employment.
