Business Technology: A Guide for Midsize and Small Business

Business Technology: A Guide for Midsize and Small Business

It wasn't that long ago when business technology was limited to a fax machine and a photocopier, but the last ten years have revolutionized the way business is done. These changes have created challenges and opportunities for every American business. In Business Technology, Michael W. Johnson explains that though large corporations have huge technology departments dedicated to solving complex problems and building new ways to market and sell their products, that today small business can compete and win, thanks to the newest advances in business technology (hardware, software, and communications). Small business can now do everything a big company can, including: Using technology to cut costs on everything from payroll to copier paper. Using social networking to acquire new customers and retain existing ones. Outsourcing technology support to save time and money. Using CRM systems to determine which customers are profitable customers and which are not. Using Integrated Business Systems to significantly improve the quality of operations. Using video conferencing to save on travel costs... and more! Most of all, what a small business needs is good advice. That's where Michael W. Johnson and his new book Business Technology can help. In it, he outlines the opportunities the technological revolution offers and describes the technologies used by technology savvy companies to effectively operate and grow their business. And he does it in a way that anyone can understand. Business Technology is not a book for technical people. It is a book for business people who want to know how to use technology to make their business become more efficient and more profitable.

Talking about Machines: An Ethnography of a Modern Job (Collection on Technology and Work)

Talking about Machines: An Ethnography of a Modern Job (Collection on Technology and Work)

This is a story of how work gets done. It is also a study of how field service technicians talk about their work and how that talk is instrumental in their success. In his innovative ethnography, Julian E. Orr studies the people who repair photocopiers and shares vignettes from their daily lives. He characterizes their work as a continuous highly skilled improvisation within a triangular relationship of technician, customer, and machine. The work technicians do encompasses elements not contained in the official definition of the job yet vital to its success. Orr's analysis of the way repair people talk about their work reveals that talk is, in fact, a crucial dimension of their practice. Diagnosis happens through a narrative process, the creation of a coherent description of the troubled machine. The descriptions become the basis for technicians' discourse about their experience, and the circulation of stories among the technicians is the principal means by which they stay informed of the developing subtleties of machine behavior. Orr demonstrates that technical knowledge is a socially distributed resource stored and diffused primarily through an oral culture.Based on participant observation with copier repair technicians in the field and strengthened by Orr's own years as a technician, this book explodes numerous myths about technicians and suggests how technical work differs from other kinds of employment.

Electromechanics of Particles

Electromechanics of Particles

The focus of this book is on the interactions of small particles, in the size range of microns to millimeters, with electric or magnetic fields. This field has particularly useful practical applications, for instance in photocopier technology and lately in the characterization and manipulation of cells and DNA molecules. The author's objective is to bring together diverse examples of field-particle interactions from many areas of science and technology and then to provide a framework for understanding their common electromechanical phenomena. Using examples from dielectrophoresis, magnetic brush xerography, electrorheology, cell electrorotation, and particle chain rotation, Professor Jones introduces a general model--the effective dipole method--to build a set of predictive models for the forces and torques responsible for the important electromechanical effects. In the last part of the book, the author covers the ubiquitous phenomenon of particle chaining. This book will be highly useful to material engineers and scientists, chemists, and biologists who work with particles, powders, or granular materials.

Perpetual Prisoner Machine: How America Profits From Crime

Perpetual Prisoner Machine: How America Profits From Crime

In The Perpetual Prisoner Machine, author Joel Dyer takes a critical look at the United States’ criminal justice system as we enter the new millennium. America has more than tripled its prison population since 1980 even though crime rates have been either flat or declining. The U.S. now incarcerates nearly two million people in its prisons and jails on any given day and over five million of its citizens are currently under some form of justice department supervision. These facts raise an obvious question: If crime rates aren’t going up, why is the prison population? The Perpetual Prisoner Machine provides the answer to this question and, shockingly, it has little to do with crime or justice. The answer is “profit.”In the 1990s, through their mutual and pension funds, millions of American investors are now unwittingly profiting from crime. As a result of America’s controversial push towards the privatization of its justice system, a growing number of well-known and politically influential U.S. Corporations—and subsequently their shareholders—are now cashing in on a prison trade whose profit potential is tied directly to the growth of the prison population. A disturbing realization, when you consider the influence that these same multi-national companies now have over our government’s policy-making process by way of their lobbyists and their ability to fill campaign coffers. The Perpetual Prisoner Machine explains how the new prison-industrial complex has capitalized upon the public’s fear of crime—which has its origins in violent media content—to help bring about the “hard on crime” policies that have led to our prison-filling, and therefore profitable, “war on crime.” In addition to a quest for profits, Dyer describes an astounding chain of events including media consolidation and globalization, advances in communication technology, and the increasing political dependence upon public opinion polls and campaign funding that have led to the creation of what the author calls “the perpetual prisoner machine,” a mechanism designed to suck the funds from social programs that diminish the crime-enhancing power of poverty and spit them into the bank accounts of those who own stock in the prison-industrial complex.Dyer concludes that powerful, market-driven forces have manipulated America into fighting a very real war against an imaginary foe. “Unfortunately,” says Dyer, “real wars have real casualties. And in this case, the victims are America’s poor, particularly those segments of our black and Hispanic population who live in poverty and who now comprise the vast majority of the new human commodity.”

Bruno Munari: Original Xerographies (Workshop (Corraini Editore))

Bruno Munari: Original Xerographies (Workshop (Corraini Editore))

A one-of-a-kind xerograph is the result of an image or object that is moved while the photocopy machine is in motion so that a new--impossible-to-replicate--image is produced. The resultant image is, then, not a copy of the original image or object but an original in its own right. This rigorous process of exploiting the photocopier's potential was developed by the quixotic Italian artist and designer Bruno Munari in the series Quaderni di Design (1977), and is reproduced here--flying in the face of digital technology--for a new generation of xerography enthusiasts. Every phase of the copy-making process, from reading limits to toner concentration has been systematically tested (to exacting 1970s standards) by Munari. The result is a witty series of samples that exhaustively detail every imaginable potential of the machine, some of which are quite unexpected.
