- Focus On Nigeria (world In Focus)

Nigeria explores the history, culture, and people of one of the richest and most complex cultures in Africa. Nigeria's lush landscapes include tropical rain forests and gorgeous white-sand beaches, and its abundant gas and oil reserves make it a major participant in the politics and economics of the world at large. With a history that goes back at least 11,000 years and a population made up of 250 ethnic groups, Nigeria has a deserved reputation as a leading force in world music. In politics, Nigeria has long had an effect on the African continent that can barely be contained by the borders separating it from its neighboring states. After almost three decades of military rule, Nigeria returned to civilian rule in 1999. Since then, Nigeria has faced the challenge of reversing the damage inflicted by corrupt military regimes and bridging the enormous gaps between the very rich and desperately poor members of its population. The Roots of Political Instability in Nigeria

The Roots of Political Instability in Nigeria

The constant drum beat of headlines about Dafur, Zimbabwe, Sudan, Somalia, as well as the other states in Africa that are beleaguered by political instability have made the causes of failed states and intra-state political conflicts a major issue, both academic and practical. Using Harry Eckstein and Ted R. Gurr's congruence-consonance theoretical framework of regime classification, E.C. Ejiogu examines the internal variations of society evident in the Nigerian state to explain why the country experiences political conflict and instability. The first time this theoretical framework has been applied to an African country; E.C. Ejiogu offers a balanced and interdisciplinary analysis of the evolution in the Nigerian political system and the role played by evolved social traits in society. Exploring themes like colonial rule and legacies, economic development, political authority and religion, Ejiogu insists that it is critical to examine Africa's diverse nationalities in terms of their geography, social, economic and authority patterns as critical elements that are disregarded in accounts of their political development. At a time when the question of state building in Africa is still unresolved, this timely book is a major contribution to the literature on transition processes in African politics and is particularly relevant to scholars and policy makers wanting to grapple with the issues associated with Africa's political disorder and the other social problems it spawns.

The Pan-African Nation: Oil and the Spectacle of Culture in Nigeria

The Pan-African Nation: Oil and the Spectacle of Culture in Nigeria

When Nigeria hosted the Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC) in 1977, it celebrated a global vision of black nationhood and citizenship animated by the exuberance of its recent oil boom. Andrew Apter's The Pan-African Nation tells the full story of this cultural extravaganza, from Nigeria's spectacular rebirth as a rapidly developing petro-state to its dramatic demise when the boom went bust.According to Apter, FESTAC expanded the horizons of blackness in Nigeria to mirror the global circuits of its economy. By showcasing masks, dances, images, and souvenirs from its many diverse ethnic groups, Nigeria forged a new national culture. In the grandeur of this oil-fed confidence, the nation subsumed all black and African cultures within its empire of cultural signs and erased its colonial legacies from collective memory. As the oil economy collapsed, however, cultural signs became unstable, contributing to rampant violence and dissimulation. The Pan-African Nation unpacks FESTAC as a historically situated mirror of production in Nigeria. More broadly, it points towards a critique of the political economy of the sign in postcolonial Africa.

Growing Apart: Oil, Politics, and Economic Change in Indonesia and Nigeria (Interests, Identities, and Institutions in Comparative Politics)

Growing Apart: Oil, Politics, and Economic Change in Indonesia and Nigeria (Interests, Identities, and Institutions in Comparative Politics)

"Growing Apart is an important and distinguished contribution to the literature on the political economy of development. Indonesia and Nigeria have long presented one of the most natural opportunities for comparative study. Peter Lewis, one of America's best scholars of Nigeria, has produced the definitive treatment of their divergent development paths. In the process, he tells us much theoretically about when, why, and how political institutions shape economic growth."—Larry Diamond, Senior Fellow, Hoover Institution  "Growing Apart is a careful and sophisticated analysis of the political factors that have shaped the economic fortunes of Indonesia and Nigeria. Both scholars and policymakers will benefit from this book's valuable insights."—Michael L. Ross, Associate Professor of Political Science, Chair of International Development Studies, UCLA"Lewis presents an extraordinarily well-documented comparative case study of two countries with a great deal in common, and yet with remarkably different postcolonial histories. His approach is a welcome departure from currently fashionable attempts to explain development using large, multi-country databases packed with often dubious measures of various aspects of 'governance.'"—Ross H. McLeod, Editor, Bulletin of Indonesian Economic Studies"This is a highly readable and important book. Peter Lewis provides us with both a compelling institutionalist analysis of economic development performance and a very insightful comparative account of the political economies of two highly complex developing countries, Nigeria and Indonesia. His well-informed account generates interesting findings by focusing on the ability of leaders in both countries to make credible commitments to the private sector and assemble pro-growth coalitions. This kind of cross-regional political economy is often advocated in the profession but actually quite rare because it is so hard to do well. Lewis's book will set the standard for a long time."—Nicolas van de Walle, John S. Knight Professor of International Studies, Cornell University Peter M. Improving Tax Compliance in Nigeria: Challenges and Prospect

Improving Tax Compliance in Nigeria: Challenges and Prospect

Due to myriad of problems discussed in this book, Nigeria has neglected or failed to use taxation, especially personal income tax, as a veritable tool for revenue generation. The neglect or failure is reflected in the prevalence of tax noncompliance evident in the country. Hence, this book examines the problems of tax noncompliance in Nigeria and how compliance could be encouraged. To achieve this, the book relies on a compliance framework termed the ?Holistic Approach?. This approach incorporates complementary ideas already developed in other compliance frameworks, such as the Australian Tax Office?s Compliance model, the OECD?s Compliance Risk Management Approach and the Jit B.S. Gill?s Diagnostic Framework developed for the World Bank). In the main, the holistic approach recognizes that Nigeria is a developing country with peculiar local problems and environmental context different from other countries, especially the developed world. With this in mind, several existing tax compliance theories and few hypotheses developed in this book are used to offer explanations as to the causes of tax noncompliance and the corrective measures that could be deployed to control them.

Three Thousand Years in Africa: Man and his environment in the Lake Chad region of Nigeria (New Studies in Archaeology)

Three Thousand Years in Africa: Man and his environment in the Lake Chad region of Nigeria (New Studies in Archaeology)

The Lake Chad region of Nigeria is an extreme environment: virtually treeless sand and a broiling clay plain in the fierce heat of the dry season, then much of it inundated and impassable in the wet season as whole areas turn into shallow lakes or marsh. Yet even this hostile landscape and climate have sustained human communities in continuous occupation for some three hundred years. Professor Connah traces the story of human adaptation to and exploitation of this unusual environment from prehistoric to modern times. He presents a natural history of Man in the region, based largely on archaeological data but drawing also on written evidence, ethnography and oral tradition to reconstruct human history and experience in this largely unknown area. This ecological approach therefore cuts across the conventional boundaries between academic disciplines and the book is intended for students of African history as well as of archaeology. It provides too the historical context in which modern development programmes for the region can be set and to some extent judged. The book is amply and well illustrated.

Information and Communication Technologies in Nigeria (Society and Politics in Africa)

Information and Communication Technologies in Nigeria (Society and Politics in Africa)

In recent years, information and communication technologies (ICTs) have been linked with socioeconomic development with the assumption that they can be harnessed for economic growth in developing countries and facilitate integration into the global information society. However, very few studies in the ICT-for-development field examine the direct connections between ICTs and socioeconomic growth. Information and Communication Technologies in Nigeria: Prospects and Challenges for Development is a compelling account of the development of ICTs in Nigeria. It examines the ICT policy framework and the societal context within which application of the technologies emerged and highlights the potentials of ICTs in socioeconomic development. However, this book also demonstrates, through interviews and case studies, that ICTs are not the panacea to underdevelopment; constraining factors in different countries can limit their capacity to succeed. The author employs a rare multidisciplinary approach that makes the book appealing and accessible to a diverse range of readership.

The Political Economy of Oil and Gas in Africa: The case of Nigeria (Routledge Studies in International Business and the World Economy)

The evolution of the Nigerian oil and gas industry spanned about a century during which several challenges were encountered and surmounted by major International Oil Companies (IOCs). This book provides a thoroughly researched guide to the Nigerian oil and gas industry.   The author examines the increasing role of Africa in the contribution of oil and gas resources to the global energy market and provides an overview of oil and gas exploration and production activities in Algeria , Libya , Egypt and Angola . The book presents an in-depth review of the growth and challenges of the Nigerian oil and gas industry. It also highlights the geological features of the oil and gas bearing regions of the country. In particular, the emerging prominence of the Gulf of Guinea as a prolific hydrocarbon bearing zone is extensively evaluated.

State, Economy, and Society in Post-Military Nigeria

State, Economy, and Society in Post-Military Nigeria

The nature of the state and the ideological thrust of state policies continue to shape the character of the economy and social relations in Nigeria. This book analyzes how neo-liberal state economic policies and political reforms have impacted on state-society relations, economic and class configurations, social composition of power, social welfare and cohesion in post-military Nigeria. The Nigerian state more than ever remains a contested political project, with trepidation over its course and future. This collection points to key policy recommendations that may be crucial in redirecting the future of the country.

This study marks a departure from the orthodox focus on Nigeria's ethnic problems, including the contentious demand of the southern minorities for an increase in the weight assigned the principle of derivation, by examining federal expenditures to determine the distribution of federal presence, and thus winners and losers, bearing in mind that the entire country is federal government's coverage.

Nigeria's Christian Revolution: The Civil War Revival and Its Pentecostal Progeny 1967-2006 (Regnum Studies in Mission)

Nigeria has become the area of one of the most remarkable religious movements of recent times, reflecting the shift in the global center of Christianity from the North to the South. This book tells the story of one sector of this movement from its roots in the Nigerian civil war to the turn of the new millennium. It describes a revival that occurred among the Igbo people of Eastern Nigeria, and the new Pentecostal churches it generated, and documents the changes that have occurred as the movement has responded to global flows and local demands. As such, it explores the nature of revivalist and Pentecostal experience, but does so against the backdrop of local socio-political and economic developments, such as decolonization and civil war, as well broader processes, such as modernization and globalization.
