Extra Innings: More Baseball Between the Numbers from the Team at Baseball Prospectus

Extra Innings: More Baseball Between the Numbers from the Team at Baseball Prospectus

In 1996, a brassy young team of fans produced a guide to baseball statistics. Printed on a photocopier, its distribution, which was in the low hundreds, was limited to friends, family, and die-hard stat heads. Sixteen years later, the Baseball Prospectus annual regularly hits best-seller lists and has become an indispensable guide for the serious fan. In Extra Innings, the team at Baseball Prospectus integrates statistics, interviews, and analysis to deliver twenty arguments about today’s game. In the tradition of their seminal book, Baseball Between the Numbers, they take on everything from steroids to the amateur draft. They probe the impact of managers on the game. They explain the critical art of building a bullpen. In an era when statistics matter more than ever, Extra Innings is an essential volume for every baseball fan.

A Century of Philadelphia Sports

A Century of Philadelphia Sports

What was Philadelphia's first National Hockey League team? A hint: No, it wasn't the Flyers. What Philadelphia-area tennis star survived the sinking of the Titanic? A hint: He was ranked number one in 1916. Which baseball sluggers, one from the Phillies and one from the Athletics, won triple crowns in their respective leagues in the same year? A hint: The year was 1933. If you got even one of these questions right, you're a winner, or you've already read "A Century of Philadelphia Sports". Philadelphia-area athletes have taken home thirty big league home run crowns and twelve NBA scoring titles. The area is home to five Indianapolis 500 winners, five Sullivan Award winners, four Heisman Trophy recipients, and a two-time U.S. Open champion. Not to mention Rube Waddell, the A's Hall of Fame pitcher who would sometimes leave the ballpark in the middle of a game to chase fire trucks. And they're all here in this groundbreaking book. Unprecedented in its breadth and sweep, "A Century of Philadelphia Sports" covers the big-time teams and events and also amateur and college sports. Here you will relive the glory days of Penn football and Bobby Jones' completion of the Grand Slam at Merion, the Eagles' defeat of the Packers in the NFL championship game and the Phillies' World Series championship in 1980, the popularity of soccer in the early part of the century and of fast-pitch softball in the latter half. You will visit Baker Bowl, Pine Valley, and Garden State Park and cheer on your favorites in the Penn Relays, the Big 5, and the Army-Navy game. You will also recall such low points as Connie Mack's penchant for selling off winning teams, the college basketball point-shaving scandal of 1961, the Palestra bomb scare.Did you answer two or even all three of the questions correctly? You will still have fun rediscovering your favorite teams and events and arguing over Rich Westcott's choice of each decade's top athlete. The nineties produced such outstanding athletes as the Flyers' Eric Lindros, the 76ers' Allen Iverson, the Phillies' Curt Schilling, jockey Tony Black, and basketball star Dawn Staley. You will meet all of them in these pages, as well as Westcott's top pick for the decade golfer Jay Sigel. Maybe you will even learn something new. Oh, yes, the answers are: the Philadelphia Quakers, in 1930; Dick Williams; Chuck Klein (the Phillies) and Jimmie Foxx (the A's).Rich Westcott has been a writer and editor for almost 40 years. He is the author of 10 other books, including "The New Phillies Encyclopedia" (with Frank Bilovsky), "Phillies '93: An Incredible Season", and Philadelphia's "Old Ballparks", all published by Temple University Press. He is the founder of Phillies Report, the nation's oldest continuous, baseball team newspaper. Currently, Westcott teaches sportswriting at LaSalle University and is an official scorer at Phillies games.

Molecular Crystals

Molecular Crystals

This book describes the chemical and physical structure of molecular crystals, their optical and electronic properties, and the reactions between neighboring molecules in crystals. In the second edition, the author has taken into account research that has undergone extremely rapid development since the first edition was published in 1987. For instance, he gives extensive coverage to the applications of molecular materials in high-technology devices (e.g. optical communications, laser printers, photocopiers, liquid crystal displays, solar cells, and more). There is also an entirely new chapter on the recently discovered Buckminsterfullerene carbon molecule (C60) and organic non-linear optic materials.

A Catcher's Story

A Catcher's Story

A CATCHER”S STORY - By Jim Hibbs How do you go from high school slugger to major league catcher? It’s the dream of millions, yet a journey actually taken by a select few. Author and 8 year pro Jim Hibbs was one of those fortunate enough to have the chance. A Catcher’s Story, by Jim Hibbs recounts the 8 long years he played his way through the Olympics to All Pro All Star and a shot at the Bigs, with teams like the Yankees and Dodgers as suitors. Right from the dugout, Hibbs serves up snapshots and anecdotes from Sparky Anderson, Tommy Lasorda, Tony LaRussa, the managers that taught him the game. He shared the field, and the experience of baseball, with great players like Bill Singer, Jim Lonborg, Don Gullet, Charlie Hough, Jim O’Tool, Willy Mays, Hank Aaron, Jimmy Piersall, Ernie Banks, and a player Hibbs now considers the most infamous of all time, Pete Rose. After holding his silence for decades, Hibbs now reveals the real story of the man he calls the “BLACK rose,” untold stories that few, if any, have been willing to talk about. He experienced “Charlie Hustle’s” headlong, aggressive play firsthand, recounting a collision with Rose at home plate, and he tells the real story behind the man who bet on baseball in a gritty, emotional, no holds barred “tell all” narrative that will have you turning pages for more. It’s all here, the excitement, anticipation, the heartache and sweat, and the intense competitive rumble of some of the games most colorful and controversial players and managers.

Electromechanics of Particles

Electromechanics of Particles

The focus of this book is on the interactions of small particles, in the size range of microns to millimeters, with electric or magnetic fields. This field has particularly useful practical applications, for instance in photocopier technology and lately in the characterization and manipulation of cells and DNA molecules. The author's objective is to bring together diverse examples of field-particle interactions from many areas of science and technology and then to provide a framework for understanding their common electromechanical phenomena. Using examples from dielectrophoresis, magnetic brush xerography, electrorheology, cell electrorotation, and particle chain rotation, Professor Jones introduces a general model--the effective dipole method--to build a set of predictive models for the forces and torques responsible for the important electromechanical effects. In the last part of the book, the author covers the ubiquitous phenomenon of particle chaining. This book will be highly useful to material engineers and scientists, chemists, and biologists who work with particles, powders, or granular materials.

One Of A Kind

One Of A Kind

Many have tried to become world champion two-sport professional athletes, the most well known may be Bo Jackson, Deion Sanders, Danny Ainge or even Michael Jordan. There is only one who actually achieved this goal and his name is Gene Conley. One Of A Kind chronicles Gene's amazing career where he was able to win world championships in Major League Baseball and the National Basketball Association. One reason that you might not recognize the name of Gene Conley is that he won the World Series with the 1957 Milwaukee Braves and three NBA Championships with the Boston Celtics in 58/59, 59/60 and 60/61. If Gene had achieved this today he would have multi-million dollar contracts with both teams, multi-million dollar commercial endorsement contracts and perhaps be the biggest name in sports. Gene played in an era with some of the all-time greats in both sports. Here is what some of them had to say about him and this book. "Gene Conley was one of the greatest athletes of our generation. There was no tougher or more competitive player than Gene. He is the only man, to my knowledge, to be a member of a championship baseball team and basketball team in the same year. That is quite an accomplishment." Arnold "Red Auerbach, Boston Celtics President. Red shares Phil Jackson's honor as the "winningest" coach in the NBA. "Gene and I were both Rookies when we broke into the Majors with the Milwaukee Braves in 1954. I could tell right away that he was going to be a great big league pitcher. He was a natural athlete. He could pitch, run and had a good bat. I enjoyed him as a friend and teammate for several years. I was playing in the 1955 All Star game in Milwaukee when he got the win and we both played together in the 1959 All Star game in Los Angeles. I was not surprised that he was able also to play several years with the World Championship Boston Celtics. What a great achievement to be able to perform at the highest level on World Championship teams in both baseball and basketball. We are to this day, great friends". Hank Aaron: Present all time Home Run Leader. Inducted into Baseball's Hall of Fame, played in 21 All Star Games, 23 years in the Majors, 1 World Championship. "Gene Conley was a great pitcher, a tough basketball player, a winner, and dedicated athlete who had a unique way of looking at life." Tom Heinsohn: In Basketball's Hall of Fame, he was on 8 World Championship teams with the Celtics, 9 years with them as a player, 6 time all star, 2 World Championship NBA titles as a coach. "Gene was really something. I don't know of anyone else quite like him. He has a World Series ring and an NBA Championship ring. To have a great success in two sports is rare. To me, Gene was a Giant figure on the mound. He really scared me. You had to respect him. I did and I still do. A great guy." Willie Mayes: Inducted into Baseball's Hall of Fame, played in 20 All Star Games. Was on one World Series Championship team. Twice, MVP of the National League. Played 22 years in Major League Baseball and was known as the greatest all around baseball player of all times. "We knew from watching him win the World Series that Gene was a great pitcher. When he came on board with the Celtics, he quickly proved to be a solid rebounder and superb defender in low post. Playing alongside and as a back-up to Bill Russell, Gene played with tremendous motivation and heart, contributing to three more World Championships. A bona fide double legend in two sports, Gene never lost his smile, his team spirit or his positive attitude. Thanks to Katie Conley for insuring his phenomenal accomplishments won't be forgotten." K. C. Jones, Inducted into Basketball's Hall of Fame, K.C.Jones played 9 seasons with the Celtics, was on eight World Championship teams and coached two World's Championship teams in the NBA. Friend since the fifties.

Madden: A Biography

Madden: A Biography

Several years after his playing career was cut short by injury before it had a chance to really begin, John Madden was hired as an assistant coach by the Oakland Raiders, one of professional football s most iconoclastic franchises. Two years later he was named the team s head coach and proceeded to lead the Raiders to five championship games in his first seven seasons. Following years of heartbreaking losses in some of history s most memorable games including the Immaculate Reception against the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1972 Madden and the Raiders finally reached the mountaintop, winning Super Bowl XI and giving Oakland its first title. One year later, Madden abruptly left the game he loved, retiring with the second-best winning percentage in NFL history.Had John Madden s football career ended there, his life would still be remarkable. The fact that it was only just beginning has made him an American icon and a beloved legend to millions of fans across the globe. In Madden, longtime sports columnist Bryan Burwell has written the first comprehensive biography of this living legend. From his days as a star athlete in Daly City, California, Madden was driven to succeed, a trait that helped him persevere during his tumultuous years with the Raiders under Al Davis and compelled him to try his hand at broadcasting after his coaching career was over. Madden s incredible football knowledge, down-home sensibilities, and tireless work ethic made him arguably the most popular sports analyst in any sport and led to a long and storied career as a TV pitchman. In the third stage of his public life, the Hall of Fame coach became known to new generations of fans through his eponymous line of groundbreaking video games, which are among the best-selling titles of all time.Madden is an entertaining, enlightening, and often poignant look back at the life of one of the greatest coaches, broadcasters, and beloved ambassadors the game has ever known.
