BLACK, WHITE, AND THINGS

BLACK, WHITE, AND THINGS

Inscribed with the quote, "It is only with the heart that one can see rightly / what is essential is invisible to the eye," by writer and pilot Antoine de Saint-Exupery, Robert Frank's handcrafted 1952 book, Black White and Things, was made in an edition of three identical copies designed by Werner Zryd, each with a spiral binding containing original photographs of Frank's travels to cities including Paris, New York, Valencia and St. Louis. First reprinted for an exhibition at the National Gallery in Washington, D.C., in 1994, this edition has now been designed in a smaller format by Frank. The three categories "black," "white" and "things," are shaped more by mood than subject matter: vastly different images-Frank's first wife reclining with their newborn baby, peasants squatting against a flaking wall in Peru and a business man strolling past a snow-filled tree in London-are all gathered in the "white" section, for example.

From the author of Family History and the bestselling memoir Slow Motion comes a spellbinding novel about art, fame, ambition, and family that explores a provocative question: Is it possible for a mother to be true to herself and true to her children at the same time?Clara Brodeur has spent her entire adult life pulling herself away from her famous mother, the renowned and controversial photographer Ruth Dunne, whose towering reputation rests on the unsettling nude portraits she took of her young daughter from the ages of three to fourteen. The Clara Series, which graced the walls of museums around the world as well as the pages of New York City tabloids that labeled the work pornographic, cast a long and inescapable shadow over its subject. At eighteen, when Clara might have entered university and begun to shape an identity beyond her sensationalized, unsought role in the New York art world, she fled to the quiet obscurity of small-town Maine, where she married and had a child, a daughter whom she has tried to shield from the central facts of her early life and her damaging role as her mother's muse.Fourteen years later, Ruth Dunne is dying, and Clara is summoned to her bedside. Despite her anguish and ambivalence about confronting a family life she has repressed and denied for more than a decade, Clara returns. She finds Ruth surrounded, even in her illness, by worshipful interns, protective assistants, and her conniving art dealer.Once again, she is Clara Dunne, the object of curiosity, the girl in the photos. Except this time she has her own daughter to think about-a girl who at nine looks strikingly like the girl in Ruth's photos-and she yearns to protect her, to insulate her from the exposure that will inevitably result when her two worlds, New York and Maine, collide. As Clara charts a path connecting her childhood with her adult life, Shapiro's novel weaves together past and present in images as stark and intense as the photographs that tore the Dunnes apart. A brilliant examination of motherhood-a novel that pits artistic inspiration against maternal obligation and asks whether the two can ever be fully reconciled-Black & White explores the limits and duties of family loyalties, and even of love. Gripping, haunting, psychologically complex, this is Shapiro at her captivating best.

You can't be neutral about the media. Some are critical of it, some distrust it, but almost all of us are influenced by it. So why do newspapers in Goa behave the way they do? Can we get some clues from what insiders say about their experiences? This book covers over four decades of post-colonial Goa's newspaper scene. It offers colourful -- if highly personalised, and often critical -- stories of those who saw the media from the frontline. Read about the media and first assembly elections of 1963, and attempts in the 1970s to build alternatives in the English-language and Konkani. Many pages focus on the impact of the Herald (formerly O Heraldo) on journalism in contemporary Goa. In 1983, this paper switched from being the last Portuguese daily published in Asia, to an English-language newspaper printed using the latest in computers and technology. But not without challenges of its own.... Journalists explain their travails of covering rural Goa. Included is the story of the birth of the Gomantak Times. Outstation journos have their own insights on the media scene here. Two essays cover Konkani journalism, making some bold and contentious points. Among others, one essay also looks at the implications of the entry of the Times of India into Goa in 2008. Don't miss this commentary on the media in Goa if you don't miss your morning newspaper each day. * * * * Edited by Frederick Noronha Co-published by Goa, 1556 Broadway Book Centre Cover design by Cecil Pinto ISBN 978-81-905682-0-3 Price Rs 195 in India US$14 Euro 10 abroad Printed and bound in India

Marcus and Eddie are best friends. They’re also stars on the basketball court, where they’re known as Black and White. Race has never been an issue: Marcus is black, Eddie is white, but it doesn’t matter. Until they start to pull stickups for extra pocket cash and the gun they’re using goes off. Now Marcus is going to jail and Eddie is going to college, even though Eddie is the one who fired the gun. Told in their two voices, Black and White is the gripping story of two good boys who make a bad mistake. It’s also a heart-breaking look at the realities of the urban criminal justice system. Written with passion and uncanny authenticity, this is Paul Volponi’s debut young adult novel.

Black Swan (Blu-ray/Digital Copy) [Blu-ray] [Blu-ray] (2011)

Black Swan (Blu-ray/Digital Copy) [Blu-ray] [Blu-ray] (2011)

Feverish worlds such as espionage and warfare have nothing on the hothouse realm of ballet, as director Darren Aronofsky makes clear in Black Swan, his over-the-top delve into a particularly fraught production of Swan Lake. At the very moment hard-working ballerina Nina (Natalie Portman) lands the plum role of the White Swan, her company director (Vincent Cassel) informs her that she'll also play the Black Swan--and while Nina's precise, almost virginal technique will serve her well in the former role, the latter will require a looser, lustier attack. The strain of reaching within herself for these feelings, along with nattering comments from her mother (Barbara Hershey) and the perceived rivalry from a new dancer (Mila Kunis), are enough to make anybody crack... and tracing out the fault lines of Nina's breakdown is right in Aronofsky's wheelhouse. Those cracks are broad indeed, as Nina's psychological instability is telegraphed with blunt-force emphasis in this neurotic roller-coaster ride. The characters are stick figures--literally, in the case of the dancers, but also as single-note stereotypes in the horror show: witchy bad mommy, sexually intimidating male boss, wacko diva (Winona Ryder, as the prima ballerina Nina is replacing). Yet the film does work up some crazed momentum (and undeniably earned its share of critical raves), and the final sequence is one juicy curtain-dropper. A good part of the reason for this is the superbly all-or-nothing performance by Natalie Portman, who packs an enormous amount of ferocity into her small body. Kudos, too, to Tchaikovsky's incredibly durable music, which has meshed well with psychological horror at least since being excerpted for the memorably moody opening credits of the 1931 Dracula, another pirouette through the dark side. --Robert Horton
