In a Free State: A Novel With Two Supporting Narratives

In a Free State: A Novel With Two Supporting Narratives

"In a Free State" deals in displacement. It tells first of an Indian servant in Washington, then of an Asian West Indian in London who is in jail for murder. Then the story moves to Africa, to a fictional country something like Uganda or Rwanda. The two main characters are English. They once found Africa liberating, but now it has gone sour on them. At a time of tribal conflict they have to make the long drive to the safety of their compound. In the background, the threat of violence looms. The voices in this novel are breathtakingly vivid, while the characters are portrayed with an intelligence and sensitivity that is rarely seen in contemporary writing. Dennis Potter described the book as one 'of such lucid complexity and such genuine insight, so deft and deep, that it somehow manages to agitate, charm, amuse and excuse the reader all at the same pitch of experience'. This is one of V.S. Naipaul's greatest novels, hard but full of pity.

The End Of The Free Market - Bremmer, Ian

The End Of The Free Market - Bremmer, Ian

"An essential guide to the future of the world economy." -David Smick, author of The World is CurvedA number of authoritarian governments, drawn to the economic power of capitalism but wary of uncontrolled free markets, have invented something new: state capitalism. In this system, governments use markets to create wealth that can be directed as political officials see fit. As an expert on the intersection between economics and politics, Ian Bremmer is uniquely qualified to illustrate the rise of state capitalism and its long-term threat to the global economy. The main characters in this story are the men who rule China, Russia, and the Arab monarchies of the Persian Gulf, but their successes are attracting imitators across much of the developing world. This guide to the next big trend includes useful insights for investors, business leaders, policymakers, and anyone else who wants to understand major emerging changes in international politics and the global economy.

She desires a life-enhancing union filled with passion, creativity and adventure. She strives for a meaningful life and work but is constantly confronting loneliness, self-doubt, disappointment and despair. She envisions her life as one of achievement, simplicity and purpose. Her unusual degree of determination propels her forward toward artistic, professional and romantic fulfillment. A recurrent source of tension in the story reverberates between her search for the one great love of her life, embodied in the painter Rex Dravus, and her art, with her all along, that she ultimately realizes may be the greatest passion she will ever know. Her insight, wisdom, patience, and hard won self-knowledge help her to reluctantly acknowledge the man who has loved her passionately throughout their stormy relationship might not be the one with whom she will stay. Throughout the novel Hattie evolves through various stages as she sheds conventional physical, emotional, and artistic restrictions to live her life on her own terms. Yearning to unburden herself of personal and social constraints, she works to unleash the natural, instinctive, free spirit that resides within her. Little by little she struggles to transcend the cumbersome limitations as she moves toward becoming a free, untamable, unique, and arrestingly whole woman. In order to fully develop her artistic vision and follow her creative destiny, she must remain undeterred by any obstacles. She realizes that this includes all personal relationships, at least for the present, especially the demanding one in which she is currently involved. Finally she reaches the painful decision to pursue the fulfillment of her dreams on her own and stay on her charted course. She is alone again with her Art. Her salvation is in knowing that it will always be there to sustain her.

Cold Running Creek

Cold Running Creek

During one of the most tumultuous times for the North American continent (pre and post Civil War) three generations of women, both Native American and African American, struggle to be free. Raven, the main character of the first two chapters of the novel, is the daughter of Choctaw Native Americans who have escaped the relocation from Mississippi to Oklahoma Territory in hopes of negotiating their rights in the political maze of their changing landscape. in the event of faltered plans, her mother and father, ishki and inki, have charged Raven with the responsibility of her two younger siblings. The three children are the sole survivors of the resulting tragedy. Though eventually Raven marries a half French, half Choctaw man of prominence, and becomes the proud Misses of LeFlore plantation, she bares the initial, seemingly indelible wounds of the novel, and extends those to her daughter, Lilly, a half black, half Choctaw infant who Raven raises as the full-blood heir to LeFlore. As the upshot of a second political miscalculation of American conquest, Lilly is captured and sold into the last three years of slavery. Though her actual bondage is short, her escape from her own enslavement spans to mid-life. She is always waiting for something to change. One day, she abandons her two daughters and commits a dreadful act against her husband. Though horrifying, her lashing out is the very catalyst for her freedom. In an ending that peaks to a crescendo of redemption, Lilly's salvation brings with it freedom for two generations of male and female ancestors of both Choctaw and African heritage. Cold Running Creek is enlightening in its untold historical truths, and relevant to all time with its soul-stirring revelations. With a chorus of swamps, voodoo, floods, creeks and rivers, Cold Running Creek is rich, passionate, and leaves the reader breathless.

Birds Crying

Birds Crying

Loosely based on the author's own life, Birds Crying recounts six months in the lives of Yurie (nicknamed Yuri) Mama, a well-established middle-aged novelist; and her husband Shozo. Yurie is a free spirit and Shozo has retired early from the position of a salaryman (salaried white-collar employee) in order to relish life as a house-husband, the full-time secretary, cook, and dependent of his wife. Their only child, their daughter Chie, born overseas, has long since left the nest. Although their intellectual interests are poles apart-Shozo was trained as a chemist-their interactions with each other, often in the form of delightful repartee, reveal how their differences keep boredom at bay and add spice to their life. The main plot concerning Yurie dovetails with three subplots: the stories surrounding her cousin Mizuki, married to a German; her uncle Shigeru and his wife Fukiko; and Yurie s Chinese-American friend Lynn Ann and her husband Henry. A fine intermeshing of many unusual characters and a probing of the complex workings of Yurie s literary mind show the sophistication of Oba at her best. The result is a tapestry of extraordinary moments that expand and interconnect via interior monologues and dialogues ranging from the humorous and farcical to the somber and meditative. The narrator s voice and the characters conversations are filled with acutely perceptive social and cross-cultural commentaries. Long-forgotten incidents come back to life, triggered by the sight of an ancient tree, the name of a flower, or the crying of a bird, and memories spawn tales within tales. Despite the fact that the characters motives for their actions defy prediction, all of these seemingly disparate elements are woven into a coherent whole, a reflection of the interdependency of humanity and nature in its wholeness that is one of the many underlying threads of the story. It is not by chance that the names of the three main female characters are Yuri(e) (lily), Mizuki (dogwood), and Fuki(ko) (butterbur, a plant whose stalks are considered a delicacy in traditional Japanese cuisine). Impervious to romanticism or sentimentalism, Oba's own imaginative world is securely anchored in clear-eyed realism. It was shaped by the most real and surreal event of the twentieth century, the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Forever seared into the mind of the fifteen-year-old Oba, mobilized along with her schoolmates to provide assistance in the aftermath of the bombing, was the ghastly sight of survivors, barely alive, escaping the scorched air of the leveled city. Raised in a family that included progressive-minded grandparents, self-confident, assertive aunts, and parents whose overt mutual adoration was scandalous to say the least by prewar neo-Confucian, Japanese standards, Oba had been, as it were, inoculated against the totalitarian propaganda of the imperial regime under Emperor Hirohito. In postwar Japan, a four-year liberal arts education at Tsuda Women s College provided ba respite, affirmation, and an intellectual grounding that would sustain her creatively and spiritually for years to come.

The Things a String Can Be

The Things a String Can Be

It’s just a silly string, this wet old thing. Or was it? In "The Things A String Can Be," the main character Sam leaves the house after days of rain with nothing in tow but his imagination. He finds a simple piece of string in a big puddle and spends the entire day dreaming of ways to turn this ordinary object into extraordinary adventures with his friends. His adventures then lead to a heartwarming ending. In Sam’s mind, the string becomes Tarzan’s jungle vine, a tree swing, jump rope, necklace for his mom and much more. With rhyming, repetition and bold, colorful graphics, author Julie Goulis and illustrator John Ferguson encourage children to use their own creativity to entertain themselves. Children are captivated by this imaginative young boy and his adventures with a silly old string. "The Things A String Can Be" is the first of a series of books using ordinary objects to go on extraordinary adventures. It also includes a bonus free activity guide at the end that gives children, parents and teachers several creative projects using string and the imagination. The strikingly original illustrations are hand-drawn in pencil and then colorized and enhanced by computer. Julie Goulis teams up with John Ferguson in two outstanding picture books. Both are superbly created. The Things A String Can Be and Something Shiny, Something Round are picture book springboards for young imaginations long after the books have been read. -- Midwest Book Review The Things A String Can Be was conceived with an excellent concept in mind and produced with strikingly original illustrations that are beautifully printed. Children will love the pictures and the repetitive phrases. The book is well worth having. -- Ohioana Quarterly This book is adorable, and young children will be wowed by the bold, colorful graphics. Commendable is the premise of transforming a string into wondrous objects merely by employing one’s imagination. This theme is essential in these days of video games and mind numbing television. -- Rockland Review

Conrad's Lord Jim: Psychology of the Self

Conrad's Lord Jim: Psychology of the Self

This non-academic author explores Conrad's classic Lord Jim as a clinic in the psychology of the self, a novel whose characters are designed to reflect various degrees of integration of self-image and action and independence from the approval of others. Conrad's character construction anticipates the findings and theories of modern psychology, particularly those of psychological differentiation and to a lesser extent Jung and Freud. The main contrast in the clinic of the self is between the independent Marlow and the dependent Jim. After Jim fails to do his duty as First Mate on a ship named the Patna, he is judged by a court of inquiry and humiliated. Pathologically subject to shame because of the lack of any secure self, the dependent Jim attempts to hide by moving from port to port and finally into the jungle in out of the way Patusan. Crowned Lord Jim by the natives, he meets a seemingly inevitable fate because of his continuing need for approval from others. The independent Marlow helps Jim and in the process develops nuanced attitudes beyond conventional morality. Anderson sees the principal art of the novel as the connection Conrad forged between Jim and the Patna. Damaged by a submerged object while carrying Muslim pilgrims on their annual pilgrimage, the cause and effect of damage to the ship are metaphors for the cause and effect of Jim's psychic damage, damage that makes him susceptible to the pressure of opinions of others. Damaged early by the lack of a mother's nurture, Jim has no strong inner bulkheads to resist the pressure of the opinions of others. This author views the background of the novel, the background against which Conrad constructed Jim's life drama, to include the Garden of Eden myth and the attitudes towards free will in Islam and Christianity. As he did with works by Joyce, Faulkner and Flaubert, Anderson gives his analysis in a chapter by chapter and selected paragraph by paragraph reading of the novel.
