Introduction To Circle Packing: The Theory Of Discrete

Introduction To Circle Packing: The Theory Of Discrete

The topic of circle packing was born of the computer age but takes its inspiration and themes from core areas of classical mathematics. A circle packing is a configuration of circles having a specified pattern of tangencies, as introduced by William Thurston in 1985. This book lays out their study, from first definitions to latest theory, computations, and applications. The topic can be enjoyed for the visual appeal of the packing images - over 200 in the book - and the elegance of circle geometry, for the clean line of theory, for the deep connections to classical topics, or for the emerging applications. Circle packing has an experimental and visual character which is unique in pure mathematics, and the book exploits that to carry the reader from the very beginnings to links with complex analysis and Riemann surfaces. There are intriguing, often very accessible, open problems throughout the book and seven appendices on subtopics of independent interest. This book lays the foundation for a topic with wide ap

The Circle of Friends

The Circle of Friends

This book is a reflection of a group of Larry Lindstrom's friends whose stories of hunting, fishing, golfing, and their brotherhood of friendship have resulted in many humorous incidents. It was the encouragement of these friends that inspired Larry to write these stories and put them in print. Larry draws his humor from his real life experiences and those of his circle of friends. His career in broadcast radio afforded him the time and friendships that provided the elements for these stories. Now retired, he is sharing his humorous adventures in the outdoors with other sportsmen. The names have been changed to protect those who may recognize themselves in his stories. Sit back and enjoy the whimsical, humorous collection of stories that could only have been written by someone with the ability to find the humorous side of life!

Circle Of Stone---A Kid's Guide To Stonehenge

Circle Of Stone---A Kid's Guide To Stonehenge

The area of Stonehenge was long used by the ancients as a burial ground, and you can see the burial mounds today where the ancient people cremated and buried their dead. It is long believed that the Druids constructed Stonnehenge as a place of worship, and Stonhenge is considered to be a great architectural feat. You can walk in a circle around Stonehenge and see it from many perspectives, set in its natural setting with sheep and cattle grazing nearby. When Stonehenge was built is also up for debate. Some say it was built as early as 3000 BC, others speculate it was constructed about 2400 BC. No one knows exactly how this monument was created or why, and no one knows by whom it was erected. It baffles the mind how ancient people could have moved the huge Stonehenge stones. The legend of King Arthur even comes into play in the discussion of the construction of Stonehenge. One Twelfth Century writer, Geoffrey of Monmouth, in his History of the Kings of Britain , wrote that Merlin brought the stones to the Salisbury Plain from Ireland sometime in the fifth century, and Merllin suggested an expedition to Ireland for the purpose of transplanting the “Giant’s Ring Stone Circle” to Britain (stones that had been previously brought to Ireland from Africa by giants). Others suggest this was the work of extra-terrestrials; but no one really knows how Stonehenge was erected or what its purpose was. It is all speculation. Award winning poet and author, Penelope Dyan and photographer John D. Weigand traveled to Stonehenge to bring this book to you and to remind us all that nothing is impossible, even if it seems that way. Stonehenge is proof positive of that!

The Circle of Love

The Circle of Love

The circle of divine love is always present within the heart. The journey of the mystic is to retrace this circle and so experience the oneness that is hidden within us. Continuing his work of providing a contemporary understanding of Sufism, Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee draws us into this mystery of the soul. He describes the way of mystical prayer and of listening with the heart. He offers valuable insight into power and the spiritual life: how to use one's power to break free of restrictions and live the joy of one's divine nature. He explores the primordial question of why we so easily forget our origin in God. Finally, The Circle of Love takes us deep into the mystical secret of being lost in God, to the center of the circle where the lover merges into the Beloved, and the heart's deepest truth is revealed.

A Calculating People: The Spread Of Numeracy In Early A

A Calculating People: The Spread Of Numeracy In Early A

A Calculating People is an entertaining and informative history of the birth of the American passion for numbers, tracing the history of "numeracy" from its origins in the Enlightenment to its flowering in mid-19th century America. Patricia Cline Cohen focuses on episodes that illustrate the growing skill and enthusiasm for numbers in the colonies and early republic, from the controversial inauguration of the census in Jamestown and the West Indies to the role played by "statisticks" in politics and social reform. By examining the rising prestige of quantification, Cohen sheds light on the changing ways that Americans thought about their social, political and economic relations. Now back in print, A Calculating People reveals how numeracy profoundly shaped the character of society in the early republic and provides a wholly original perspective on the development of modern America.

The Circle Dance of Time

The Circle Dance of Time

"There is nothing wiser than the circle," Rilke says in his Stories of God. John Dunne's new book explores the wisdom of the circle. He uses the metaphor of the circle dance, a folk dance in which the women form an inner circle, holding hands and moving clockwise; the men form an outer circle, moving counterclockwise. When the music stops the person opposite you is your partner for the next dance. Dunne interprets the circle as the great circle of life and light and love that comes from God and returns to God. Dunne emphasizes the far point on the circle, farthest away from God, and uses that to discuss the difficulties of our secular age. In the individual life, the far point is a dark night of the soul. Yet Dunne sees that far point of loneliness and darkness as a point as well, marking the return to love and light. So the theme of the book is like the words of an old Bedouin to Lawrence of Arabia, "The love is from God, and of God, and towards God." The book concludes with the words of twenty-one "Circle Songs," composed by the author. "This remarkable book records the spiritual search of a lifetime. It articulates this search through a series of powerful recurring images--that of a centre of stillness surrounded by silence, that of the circle dance of time itself, and many others--which confront and connect with and explicate each other in a number of combinations. The faith which is struggling to find expression is a Christian faith, but the images come from a great many sources and have been framed by people on many spiritual paths. What emerges is a powerful vision of Christian faith, centred in the Gospel promise of eternal life, which is at the same time in continuous exchange with the other great traditions, religious and philosophical, of human spiritual search. This combination of profundity and openness makes The Circle Dance very much a book for our time." --Charles Taylor, McGill University "I think of John Dunne as a kind of erudite Catholic Tevye, carrying on such an intimate conversation with God that we can learn about love just by listening in. Repetitive in the same way as Proust, or the rosary, his Circle Dance of Time is so joyful a meditation on our journey through time with and toward God that in places I thought my heart might burst; maybe better not to read before bed. A Separate Circle: Jewish Life in Knoxville, Tennessee

A Separate Circle: Jewish Life in Knoxville, Tennessee

“An insightful and well-written book. One of the best studies of local Jewish history extant.”—Leonard Dinnerstein, University of ArizonaFor more than a century and a half, the Jewish citizens of the area in and around Knoxville, Tennessee, have maintained the rituals and traditions that define them as a separate people, even as they have blended quietly with their non-Jewish neighbors.Wendy Lowe Besmann paints a vivid picture of this community, bringing alive the stories of merchants, grocers, immigrants from Eastern Europe, and scientists and university professionals who have come to call the area home. Drawing on interviews and other sources, she traces the growth of local synagogues, explores the role of Jewish community centers, looks at how children were shaped by school and Temple life, and even recalls the community’s summer vacations at nearby Neubert Springs. With broad historical sweep, Besmann examines what life was like for Knoxville’s early Jewish community and how the events of their lives were affected by American expansion and depression, by social upheaval and urban migration. Successive waves of immigrants, from the traveling peddlers of the late nineteenth century to the doctors, lawyers, and engineers of the late twentieth, have both adapted to the culture of East Tennessee and shaped it in subtle ways. As they did in cities all over the South, Knoxville’s Jewish population followed jobs, meaning that most of them did not grow up in the region.Besmann looks at topics as diverse as patterns of chain migration, the role of Jewish merchants in the Civil War, and the contributions of a Jewish-owned music store to the career of Elvis Presley. She describes the vital role of ritual and celebration in the community, from the importance placed on religious education to the songs played at bar mitzvahs. The Author: Wendy Lowe Besmann is a freelance writer whose work has been published in The New York Times, USA Today, The Atlantic, Self, and Better Homes & Gardens. She lives in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
